I moved from MSN to Facebook back in like 06 and will continue to use FB exclusively.

Fuck Skype, i will never install that POS on my pc.

Oh well. Still use it... :/

RIP

used to use msn. then with Windows 8 it was the effort to download the exe cilent so i'm like fuck it. just use the metro app and skype app instead.

I use skype on a daily basis, but I find that the new direction skype has been heading in since version 4 to be stupid, counter productive and too bloated, feature and aesthetics wise. I'm still using 3.8 on my vista computer and 3.6 on my 7 computer and I will most likely not be logging in again once those ancient versions are no longer allowed on the network.

Still, RIP to MSN Messenger. I only used you for a handful of friends who refused to use AIM or anything else, but you will be missed in my Pidgin client list.

Didn't realize that so many people had fond memories of it. For me it was a plague that prevented harmony of messaging clients at the OS level. I'm pretty much all AIM and Skype these days. GTalk is just a slow motion failure at this point. Hopefully they will retire that too.

RIP old friend. Skype is terrible and the only time I pull it out is for the odd person that will only do video chat on Skype. It's so bad it actually pushed me into using Google Hangouts for video chat with my family.

Wow, I've got fond memories of MSN; I used it for most of the 2000's. Started out on ICQ in the late 90s but everyone seemed to migrate over to MSN so I begrudingly joined them. I regularly used it up until 2011 and occasionaly I still log on to chat to the 5/6 people who are still active on my contacts list.

Don't think I'll move across onto Skype, I shall just call it the end of my IM journey. RIP MSN! (no one ever did call it "windows live messenger" when it switched, did they?)

I'm glad I saw this thread. My company uses MSN to chat internally on a regular basis...we have 30-40 people on it.

I guess it's time for us to switch to Skype. A lot of us use Trillian-will that pose a problem?

I managed to log into my Skype account (****) with Trillian, but didn't test it further than that. I couldn't log on to Skype with my messenger account (****@whatever.com) with Trillian though... "Not a valid Skype username" or something.

Oh man, remember the days when I got so excited for new MSN updates. And then after MSN 7.xx or something it started going downhill and all the updates just made it worse.

Me and the friends I chat with switched over to Skype about 2 years ago because of the better group chat (we pretty much started a new group chat every day with MSN and it was annoying to invite people and shit). Haven't looked back since.

I can remember some of my custom emoticons I had and I still type them in Skype to the friends who know what smiley I mean when I do it.

Oh well, goodbye old friend. I wish I had turned off all sounds from the first time I ever used it, fucking hate that new message sound now.

Thats weird and twisted, I wonder why.

MSN brings back memories. Hilarious and terrible memories.

Used it from late elementary school to midway through college a few years ago. I forgot to log in one day, and it was nice having silence while on the computer, and just kept it off. Then I reinstalled Windows and just didn't bother to install it.

Remember when having an avatar and a custom background was a HUGE deal?!

Same here, used to 'marinate' chicks on it back in high school, it was awesome.

This is really bad news as Skype is blocked by ISP's in Belize I use MSN to video chat with my significant other daily.

Thats weird, why is it blocked in Belize, is it because of Mcaffe? (jokes)

Because the Government is a sham and the ISP is run by a monopoly that gets an immense profit from overcharging people to make international calls. All while stifling growth and productivity of the free market.
It's funny how a lot of people (not necessarily you) did not know about Belize before the Mcaffe fiasco, or that the country is connected to the US by you know Mexico.

Aww, so many memories... used it a lot around 2000-2001 before I kinda quit IMing altogether. Always had one eye on Messenger (with everyone's bitchy, passive-agressive screennames of the moment) and one eye on Phantasy Star Online or something like that :-) RIP old friend.

Thats a shame, so they are afraid of the free calls from Skype :(

My friends and I still use AIM all the time. It's what we grew up with. My buddy list has become less and less active over the years and I started deleting people eventually. But I can't imagine not using AIM.

How do you guys keep in contact with friends if you're not instant messaging? When I go on Facebook, I check the newsfeed but that's about it. I'm OK with Gmail and we might switch over to it.

But I don't understand how phone calls and text messages can suffice for conversation—there's something great about talking on AIM. More in depth than texting yet not as involved as a phone call.

I just logged in for the first time in years. Out of 200+ contacts, no one was online. :(

It's odd to see this go. In high school, MSN Messenger was like religion. I think many of my peers gained a lot of their computer skills due, in part, to MSN Messenger's popularity. RIP.

Used MSN almost every day for last 8 years? Feels very strange and sad, I have Skype but I'm not happy about it. Don't like the cam set up, it's bloated and I don't like the IM interface.

for me its probably more than 10 years.

Personally I find MSN a lot better than Skype for your average IM conversations. Skype is much better for video chat, phone calls and group conversations though. But since I rarely do those things, MSN is my main IM client.

Plus embedded YouTube videos and photos is always good.

I really wish the embedded pictures and video would be added in a different IM client, because I don't know any. I doubt Skype will take that over.

You can also just copy and paste pictures directly, so also make print screens and share them easily.

Oh no :(

saddest internet news ever.... heart broken by this really :(

One of the best days of my entire life were using MSN messenger and knowing many great friends and bond with them through it.

Can't believe it's going to shut down for good :(

So so so so so sad.....
