ive decided to go on a media blackout from this starting from now on, since i want to play the games and be like wtf ;0;

even years after sapphire came out i was still discovering pokemon in the game (gorebyss and stuff) and new areas i hadnt been, since diamond and pearl i always like found out about the games before hand

Yeah I'm thinking about this.

There was such a huge gap between my playthroughs of Gold and Sapphire that I actually thought a whole host of Gen 2 pokemon were Gen 3.

It was really exciting not knowing anything about it and discovering all these new pokemon naturalistically.

Impossible for me. There's no way I can do this right now. Maybe a month or two before the release, not now.

I'd like an evolution for Sudowoodo, Magcargo and Relicanth.

I'd like to see whatever evolution they were cooking up for Jynx before the controversy caused them to act like she didn't exist anymore.

Then she, Magmar and Electabuzz could go back to being the ugliest trio ever.

LOL, fuck blackouts, show me the Pokemon NOW. The fun part once we have the games will be digging into the intricacies of the new moves and mechanics and fashioning new teams out of 700+ Pokemon. Leading up to the games, though, the fun is all about seeing new Pokemon, admiring their designs and dreaming up what they might become or do. :)

Im with you on this. Pokemon is a game where i can know everything but still have a fucking blast.

I am consoling myself with the assumption that everyone will just make new Pokemon their avatars and post everywhere else so a blackout won't do that much good.

If I can avoid knowing gym leaders and evolutions, that would be nice.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could transfer hold items to Gen VI too? Instead of just the Pokémon?

I'm tired of saving up Battle Points every generation for the same few items. Especially the Power items that pass down IVs and help with EV training.

Yeah, and it's fun to think that since they revealed the games now and they come out in October, I'd imagine there's a reason for it, part of which may include a slow but steady drip-feed of new reveals leading up to launch.

It's going to be tough, for sure. But I have blacked out on a game in too long. It's worth the effort.

Yes. And please, they should stop with these stupid minigames. I just want my pokemon goddammit!

I don't think I've ever blacked out a game before the Walking Dead. Usually when I go into a game without expectations or news it's because I'm late to the party.

Lickylicky, Probopass, Magmortar, Tangrowth and Rhyperior are the only terrible ones... and even then that's because their prior evos are crap to begin with.

Magnezone is pretty fine.

Electivire, etc. are awesome. Togekiss actually looks like something good rather than a weird, anorexic bird thing.

I've never gone on a game blackout intentionally but I've noticed that I tend to have a lot more fun when I do.

I dont have all these high expectations of what it's "supposed" to be. Not quite as possible with a sequel though...

Oh yeah, Magnezone -- that's a case where a Gen IV evo completely redeemed a Gen I Pokemon line. It went from Magneton being a cheap design of three Magnemites linked together, to this quirky but powerful-looking flying saucer. Magnezone is amazing -- I just wish it had Levitate!

Magnezone is godlike. It doesn't have levitate but magnet rise is pretty helpful.

My favorite comic on this matter:

It does make sense why he doesn't have it from a competitive standpoint, and magnet pull is a pretty good ability. But it's silly.

Magnezone is precisely what a final evo should be, in terms of its design. By this I mean it looks considerably stronger and more durable than its predecessors. Magnezone is like some flying fortress of lightning death, lol.

I dunno, that first time I played Pokemon Blue without knowing anything, that was pretty amazing. And even though I devoured information about Gold/Silver, most of that was just through magazines and the game still blew me away.

Since then, a combination of ease of access (internet) and curiosity means I already know everything about a Pokemon game by the time it comes here. I am following someone else's pre-determined strategy of what will be best because I already know the gym types and know when I will need to bring my HM slave with me or whatever.

This time, Japan will not have completely broken it open by the time it comes here. I wonder if I can recreate that feeling of just seeing a Pokemon, going "That looks cool!" and catching and using it. It's why I have an irrational love for Bellsprout, because it was mine and I did not know then it would become a Weepinbell and I didn't know what would happen when I traded it and it evolved and I begged for it back.

That's part of the experience for me, or I guess I should say, I want that to be part of the experience for me again.

And you could obtain that death fortress pretty early in B2W2. :3

I don't mind knowing what they purposely dripfeed the public until release. Which is usually a handful of early Pokemon and like the first two gym leaders or so.

The more I think about it, the more I'm curious why they revealed these games now. Do they plan to have cards, movies, manga, etc, dealing with X/Y elemens leading up to release? Are they planning nearly a year of continuous hype with a steady release of details? Hmm...

This always happen, it's nothing new. They'll probably won't reveal anything important(like a Pokemon) until one or two months from now. Then, after some major reveal they won't show anything again for some months. And about 3 or 4 months before the release they will reveal many things. They're harsh. :(

Magnet pull is what makes Magnezone good though.

It's the ultimate steel-type killer!

Yeah, already knowing which pokemon to catch and what moves they should use and how they evolve takes out a lot of the fun for me. I kinda went off pokemon after Gen 2 because I'd devoured every scrap of info about it so a lot of the magic was gone by the time I played it. I knew about the slowpoke well and I knew about the legendary dogs and the pokegear and breeding and I knew I'd pick Cyndaquil...

I know a lot of people love Gen 2 but I feel pretty meh about it and I'm sure it's for that reason.

And it's probably why I loved Gen 3 and why I love the Gardevoir line so much. I just caught Ralts because it looked cute and I had no idea what it would evolve into or that it was a psychic type.

And then after I completed the Elite Four I went back to earlier routes and discovered a bunch of pokemon I hadn't known about before. I loved that sense of discovery. With Gen 4 I knew nearly all of the pokemon before hand and their evos so I'd planned out my team beforehand and didn't deviate from it. Probably why it took so long for me to really get around to finish it.

So yeah... going on black out seems like a good idea now. I really hope I can have as much fun with this new gen as I did Gen 1 and 3.

This is easily what excites me most for this game, Gen 3 was the last one I went into mostly blind, the only pokemon I knew were the ones shown prior to release, I somehow ended up with both Seedot and Shroomish in my team in the early goings and the magic of unknown evolutions ultimately decided their fate, Nuzleaf left me disappointed and got sidelined, Breloom was there all the way to the finish.
I want this again, both sides of the coin, new pokemon in my team taking the roles of an unexpected kick ass evo like Breloom and an underwhelming "what the hell is that?" evo like what Nuzleaf was to me.

While it was enjoyable with Gen 4 and 5 to look at the entire dex and work out my team months in advance i'm not doing that this time and I can't wait, shame that I can't see as many new pokemon added this time around compared to Gen 5, with the lack of old pokemon that would've been a fantastic one to enter blind.

edit: this post ended up eerily similar to Hypatia's above, my thunder has been stolen absorbed by lightning rod!

When I was a kid I didn't know about games until they were already out. So my first experience with Gen 2 was at the state fair where there was a booth with comics and lots of other things. There was this big bin of individual pokemon cards, and that was the first time I ever saw the new pokemon.

It was pretty magical and I dug through the entire thing to fish out all the new cards. I convinced my dad to buy them and that I would pay him back. Mantine I think was the first new pokemon that I ever saw.

I blacked myself out for BW2 after the initial reveal and first info dump. But that's because I skipped BW2. ;)

I doubt I'll be able to resist info about X and Y though. Nothing generates more hype for me than a new generation of Pokemon.

I remember EGM I think did an article with like every new GS Pokemon's artwork in a banner on the top of every page, so I definitely saw all the new Gen II Pokemon before I got the games, but I had no names and no way to know where they were or what old Pokemon they were related to. I remember a few rumors in magazines beforehand that said what Pokemon were evolving, and some magazines posted some blatantly false stuff, heh.

When Gen 3 was coming I was just starting to use the internet more often, I remember printing out a list of every new Pokemon and bringing it to school. My friends and I would marvel over them and try to figure out what types they were and stuff.

With 4 and 5 I literally knew everything about the Pokemon before they hit US, but nothing about the plot and towns.

For 6 I will only look at what Nintendo is willing to show. Since it's a worldwide release I'm hoping I can go into these games for the first time since Gen 1 and be surprised by Pokemon I find in the wild.

Haha! I did the same thing. And after their release there were still unanswered questions. These games had two space legendary pokemon and a rocket! The amount of theories for those were over nine thousand!

Hah I remember the day my sister randomly gave me a charmander card and I had no idea wtf it was or that it was part of a video game series.

I still became obsessed with it anyway.

It's kinda sad how the internet has made gaming less fun in regards to going in blind.

I doubt I would've bought AND enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2 if I'd had Gaf back when I bought it.

I remember trying EVERYTHING to see if I could get Jirachi to come out of the white rock by the space center. Or if the rocket ship would somehow unlock some sort of Deoxys event

And yet, they had the Regis! In order to obtain them you had to do some really unusual things. I had used every HM and I had walked in every empty tile on this island!

Oh god, all those stupid rumours about Mew that got passed around at school. I tried SO MANY.

In the end I got one when I was walking down the road one day and this boy with a GB randomly asked if I liked pokemon.

I said I did so he gave me his mew.
