Edge: PS4 to launch in Europe in early 2014, US/JP 2013, more powerful than next Xbox

What does 'Stacked Ram' mean, and why is that special?

What does the G in GDDR5 mean, and why GDDR5 dying out?

Why is GDDR5 already out, but DDR4 isn't?

No, no. I'm all for them hitting the U.S. as early as possible. But going into Japan early seems idiotic. The country doesn't buy consoles, least of all one produced by Microsoft. There is no reason to want an early launch advantage in that country. Europe, on the other hand, is a market where an early launch would be helpful. I'm not saying necessary, I'm saying helpful - whereas it's outright useless in Japan.

It has more to do with splitted market in Europe rather its relevance. Launch in Japan is easy, one language, one market. Do you know Europe and all these different standards, rules and laws?

To those complaining about EU getting it later - I'm in the UK - I would say to you this:

Every Sony console, ever, has released in Japan significantly earlier than the EU.
Every Sony console, ever, has released in NA ealier than the EU.

Why the fuck would people expect this to be any different?

The best thing about the social button if true is that even more annoying cunts will be posting shit videos on youtube explaining how they did this and that, headshots on COD, teabagging etc. Digging through that much crap to get to the quality material could be interesting.

Did I say best thing?

What if they already have it lead out as a $349 console with 4GB of GDDR5 & push it to $379 with 8GB of GDDR5?

$350 that has to be sarcasm?

It will be something close to 8GB of GDDR5. If not that exact amount.

Did you guys really think sony would let MS win the numbers game? ;

:)

That is matching not winning and don't expect 8GB of GDDR5, however they might add 4GB of DDR3 on top of the 4GB of GDDR5.

It is why else do you think MS spent a ton of money to R&D on the move units and go with ESRAM? Because they wanted 8gigs of ram and it would be much more expensive to use GDDR5.

I don't know really, but all right.

no it's 100!!! Lol 10 times

The fastest available DDR3 memory has a 17 GB/second peak transfer rate. The GDDR5 on the PS4 is clocked at 176 GB/second. It is literally 10 times faster, unless I'm missing something.

I can't see them changing the mb this late to add more expensive ram. Either they sell this at a loss or the price will be higher than most people think.

Sounds good, but I'm very sceptical about whether that's the whole truth. 15 minutes of (presumably 1080) video is a pretty huge wodge of data. No processing penalty suggests it's not being compressed at the fly, so you're looking at a couple of gigabytes of RAM just for that? If it *can* be compressed on the fly you're looking at something closer to 800MB, I think, which is still large - but then there's a processing hit. Unless the processing is handled in independent hardware, I guess - are there devices that can encode H264 (for instance) in realtime?

Either way it does strike me that earmarking that much RAM for (presumably) this one feature of the OS alone is a big hit to the amount that devs can use.

Hence why they are, hopefully, increasing the RAM amount. 2 GBs GDDR5/4 stacked for the OS and 6GBs GDDR5 for games.

8 GBs GDDR5 would be glorious, but even 4GBs GDDR5 and 4GBs DDR3 would still be great.

Seeing as the RAM rumor is obviously a fabrication what makes anyone think that the rest of the article is credible?

I don't think is a fabrication at all, people have just misunderstood the point being made. Sony is trying to get as much of the 4GB of Ram available to the Devs which would equal whats available on on the next xbox. The rest of the report is pretty much what we have previosuly heard, Sony have made an easy to develop machine, slightly more powerful than than the Next Xbox and it will launch this year.

I think it lays the ground. one get the leads and thus has more room to manoeuvre than the other. y'know, just like this gen.

I don't discount sony's price hurt their efforts at the beginning, but at the same time, the lead that the 360 built up has proved insurmountable for them, even with a £125 machine at christmas and a much better exclusive back catalogue as well as free online.

PS3 launched 14 months later in Europe. I think a few months delay in one territory (especially if the price difference is much smaller than last time) will be pretty minor in terms of marketshare in the long term.

I know I am in the small minority here, but I really like the idea of the touchpad feature for the new controller.

Apparently the 15 minute recording happens in the background without any hit on performance... but what about uploading?

What's the chances it'll pause your game while it does the work to get it uploaded?

Maybe it works like this:

Constant recording in the background, after something cool happens and you decide you want to share it, you hit the "Share" button and it saves a file containing the last 15 minutes of your play-time. Once you're out of an online mode or back to the dash, it automatically uploads the file to whatever location you have set up.

Basically I can see it working similar to how background downloading works on current consoles. Happens while you're not doing anything online specific.

Edit:

It will be something close to 8GB of GDDR5. If not that exact amount.

Did you guys really think sony would let MS win the numbers game? ;

:)

MS has won the numbers game in a good number of ways the last two generations. If they do win the numbers game next gen, that'll be due to MS' actions and not Sony insisting on having the bigger e-penis.

8GB of GDDR5 sounds far-fetched. Even if that was true, it would make Orbis uncomfortably close to the PS3 in terms of high base price and selling at a loss.

From reading the various bits that have leaked so far, i have a positive feeling about ps4. I'm not a tech guy by any means but the impression i get from this is that Sony has indeed learned a lot from PS3? The fact that it seems easy to develop for is important. Also, there should be a solid amount of games on release judging by how some first party developers haven't released anything for a while now (Sucker Punch, Evolution, Guerillia games and hopefully some more).

I enjoyed quite a few Sony 1st party IP's on PS3 so i'll most definately be there day one in... 2014 (europe).

Because things change over time?

MS and Nintendo managed to release their consoles with just small delays.

Do you think MS would of went with the pain in the butt move engines and ESRAM if 8 gigs of GDDR5 was cost effective at 8 gigs? There is 0 chance the PS4 has 8 gigs of GDDR5.

PlayStation 4’s European launch will follow in early 2014.
Oh fuck you sony, really fuck you, I have the ball full of this shit... another christmas with a 7th year older hardware, stupid bastard!

"The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet."

Fighting gamers rejoice! :D

Every . Console . They . Have . Ever . Made.

People are fooling themselves to think this would be any different.
I'm not thrilled about the idea, but it was obvious, so hardly worthy of complaint.

Recording feature could be better if you could choose to allow it to record for longer (if you have a larger drive available).

If Edge didn't believe a word of a rumour they wouldn't post it, there'd be point in it and they'd look stupid. They post credible information, some of it happens to be completely wrong, just like any other site.

One of the links you posted even ends with "take this stuff with a grain of salt" ffs. And they wouldn't post a rumor if they didn't believe it? That's one dumb statement, sites re-post rumors from other sites all the time, site hits are hits. They post something as a rumor, state the sources are from other sites, and add some statements from devs off Twitter or something to maybe find a link between them all for the sake of something to post and make a quick statement themselves of what they think of it all.

The difference with this is, Edge is actually the source of where this is coming from.

You can always get an xbox this year if getting a next gen console means that much to you (assuming they do a WW launch this year). You can then pick up a PS4 later next year.

Well I'm an expert on Japanese culture, if Sony doesn't release in their homeland first, every japanese gamer will be offended and they'll just turn their back on Sony and buy the Xbox Infinity. So Japan has to be served first, they simply don't have a choice!

Because things have changed since then, we now get things day and date with the us or not long after. Look at all the new hardware that comes out you wont see many with months and months of gaps. Didnt vita pretty much launch the same time im us and eu?.

PS4 is sounding like a beast of a system, Im not going to lie. Hopefully MS tries to match its specs a bit more.

Anyways, I really like the sound of the share button.. that seriously sounds like a fantastic idea. Man, its going to be hard to choose one of these consoles this fall..

I hope these extra features on controllers dont increase their price, its already too expensive.

I'm worried about the battery life of the Controller because of the extra touch features and the LCD.

I hope these things doesn't drain the battery quickly.

well, supposedly ps3 cost $800-$900 to produce and Sony eat the $300 losses. maybe ps4 will cost about $600-$700 to produce and Sony eat the $200 losses with expectation that manufacturing cost will come down very quick?

I don't know what I'm talking about here

no lcd, it's track pad, like the back of vita.

Unless they want to delay their system by a year (and that's being conservative), there's nothing major either company can do at this point.

If it does happen the fanboy wars on Gamespot, GT, and Gamefaqs will be GLORIOUS.

indeed. I'd love to see it.

I'm not so sure. nearly two holidays without competition? come on, you really think that wouldn't affect their marketshare to any significant degree?

I said it's probably something close. In fact it doesn't even have to be all GDDR5. Another half could be DDR3.

We'll find out soon. :)

it's going to be 4gb gddr5. there won't be any ddr3. you and others have completely misinterpreted the article. read it again.
