Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time reviews

People need to pay attention more.

We had several topics about this game and it even has demos.

That's not how it works though. I found out about this game being release last week and I regularly frequent video game message boards.

Maybe I just didn't care enough...

I'm just waiting for a sales bomba like with PSASBR, because Fire Emblem just came out and I already got Rayman at the end of the month.

Split reviews sound about right, not really the kinda game that's going to appeal to everybody.

I'm pretty stoked and while I'm miffed at Sony for not advertising the game one bit, I do appreciate the pricing. Gonna grab it on the way home from work today.

To compare, what were reviews like for the original Sly games?

Very close to the ones we are seeing for this entry. Maybe a few more people in the "Too much of the same" category, but still seems like this one will get about the same amount of praise/hatred.

Spend $40
Get Vita version from disc
Resell for $20+
Vita version is $30

etc.

Seems like a lot of work to save $10. Why not just get and keep two versions of the games with the added benefits?

Are people that cheap on day one? It's $40 for two versions of the game with cross-saves and some added functionality with both platforms, Wii U style.

Well my Bestbuy messed up and had the PS3 version labeled on the shelf for $30 and the Vita version for $40. So I walked out with the PS3 + Digital Vita Version for $30.

I really shouldn't buy this, considering I just got Minerva's Den and haven't even begun Jak 2 or 3... plus I'm trying to finish God of War II HD this month.

But damnit, $40.

For a developer who was essentially making shovelwhare before this, seems like a good result. Too bad they are doomed.

They'll probably be OK; Sanzaru isn't a big team, and like you mentioned, they have other outlets that they can reach for work, even if it is another Mystery Case Files game.

Their Sly remakes were not shovelware....

Say the game had a 5 million budget, I calculated it would only need to sell 125k copies at $40 to break even, which the game shouldn't have trouble reaching... I hope.

that isn't how it works....

back on topic: I have a vita but have loaned my PS3 to a friend while he is on a long work trip. Any way to buy the PS3 version and activate my Vita copy without having a PS3 at the moment?

There isn't; the Vita activation is on the actual disc itself, so you would need to put the disc in a PS3 and associate it with your PSN account to receive the Vita version.

I have never played a Sly game. Didn't they recently release a HD collection? Maybe I should dig into those first. Always wanted to play them but never got around to it. And, not that it counts considering I really wasn't paying attention, but mark me down as someone who didn't even know this game was being made.

I'm doing just that and so far sly 1 is pretty great. going to do myself a favor and avoid backlogging by completing the 3 originals first

Is this a game that particularly benefits from 60fps?

Still got a while for us EU folks..

Will be my first Sly game too. Could always sell the PS3 version though.

so who killed sanzaru, marketing or 6.5s?

the score I think sits between 7-8.4 somewhere.

Im not hyped for this at all. I don't think cartoonish platformers are for me. I bought the HD collection; played a bit and gave up.

It looks fantastic in HD, thanks in no small part to the 60 fps, as well as the clean-looking cel-shading.

If you can make a US PSN dummy account, you can download the demo and see for yourself.

Don't own a PS3 or Vita but I had no idea this was out until watching sessler's review. Also wasn't this a huge franchise for Sony during the PS2 era why didn't they advertise the game at all ?

I wouldn't say it was huge, and certainly not compared to how much more marketing muscle Sony put into Jak and R&C, but it had a sizable following and it's looked back upon quite favorably.

Surprised to see so many good reviews given the lack of marketing. I guess I need to reevaluate my opinion of how heavily marketing influences game reviews.

yeah please, kill the trend for everyone else.
Normally I would defend that type of thing (your shit, your money) but I mean you only stand to gain like $5 - $10 (considering you'd save $10 by just getting the Vita version) it's not even worth the effort to sell it and you're taking money out of their pockets.

Haven't played it, but Sessler's review reminds me of the problems I had with the originals. If its more or even worse of the same then that's a dissapointment. Especially with the weak story. Still I love 3D platformers so I still may check this one out.

Say what? A lot of games get high reviews even with zero marketing (Zero Escape, Persona, etc.).

The reviewer opinions seem pretty divided but I know I'll enjoy it. It's just a shame Europe is getting shit upon when it comes to the release date. Still, at £25 I can afford to wait a few weeks.

Well it seems in the UK at least, the prior games in the series sold abysmally...this is from the Eurogamer review of Sly 3: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/r_sly3_ps2

"To put it into some kind of Sony-related context, even the alarmingly low-selling ICO (around 25,000 units shifted in the UK) massively out-sold the original 2002 Sly title - by an estimated nine to one. Estimated, because the Sucker Punch-developed platformer didn't even scrape the Top 200 PS2 best sellers of 2002 (that's less than 3,500 copies). And to add insult to injury, last year's superb sequel sold just over 7,000. How is it that an acclaimed series from the platform holders themselves can flop so dismally in a territory that loves its platforming titles? It's a mystery that Agatha Christie herself would have been proud of."

Hmmm this is tough, I'm interested in the game but I know for a fact I'm not a huge Sly Cooper fan, I only really loved the first one...well I'll see if I can buy it still but not at regular price. I still liked what I saw so far as the demos are concerned.
