I agree with you HylianTom. Xbox720 with Call of Duty at launch will sell tons. The problem will be when people realize they can not buy second hand games or they can't play because they lose the connection.
For a lot of people the Xbox is their CoD machine, they will buy it if their friends do.
The difference is that there's competition on PC for the cheapest games, and even the big dog, Steam, does amazing deals that mitigate the benefits of trading-in games. I'm not saying we shouldn't have the right to re-sell stuff, but the climate on PC is a lot better than a locked down console that bans used sales.
While I can absolutely understand the hate towards no used games policy I actually like the steam approach.
Having a digital easy to access libary but still competetive pricing of the retail market will bring the standard of pc gaming to consoles with the benefit of pricing competition (like steam codes from amazon etc. And unlike xbox live and psn current praxis), unfortunately that has to come with a used games restriction.

Uh no. Comparing one 39.99 PC game which is mainly played online anyway to a whole console is a huge stretch.

On a personal note, barring used games is a suicide, specially if their main competitor Sony doesn't do it.
Games are going to be so expensive to make. Money needs to be recouped somehow.
They could at least charge a little extra on used games so that Microsoft or Sony can gain something from it or at least the developers.
I dont agree in buying used games cause I like to think from both sides of the fence and by doing that I can see how harmful it can be to developers

While the inability to purchase pre-owned games doesn't bother me, the inability to flush my library every now and again with an eBay scourge, does. That's more a practical issue.
The always online thing is more of a principle issue for me. While in reality, my console will probably always be connected to the internet anyway, I don't like the fact that they insist that I have to have it in that state to access the core functionality.
I find it hard to believe that this is a unilateral move on MS's part, due to the wider implications for both the consumer and the retail sector. However, if indeed this is being driven by 3rd party publishers, and MS has gone this route alone, then I'd expect to see more exclusive content find its way to the Xbox, ahead of the Orbis. Things like timed exclusives, DLC, maybe even full exclusivity in some cases.
At the end of the day though, this is all based on a simple rumour which may or may not be rooted in truth and if it is, then it is may not be the whole story. Will just have to wait and see.

I buy the vast majority of my games new, so the used thing doesn't really bother me. My only concern is that since games don't stay in print for long compared to, say, movies or books, it's going to be hard to find games that bomb or are more than a couple of years old new.

The pricing model for digital games on consoles is shit, and I don't expect that to change.

To people thinking Sony will be the savior of your monies, you're really putting your faith into Sony- the biggest proponent of price gauging and proprietary hardware in the electronics world? I used to be a huge Sony fan and in a lot of ways, I still respect them as a company. However, everyone knows they have an obsession with SOMETHING that will make their items more expensive than others. Whether it be memory sticks, proprietary memory cards, or whatever. I wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 was $100 but then you had to buy a separate $500 power plug because the proprietary one that comes with the PS4 has 8 prongs. Don't get me wrong, the other companies price gauge too (Xbox with Xbox Live and Nintendo with plastic "accessories"), but Sony definitely is not exempt from doing it.

Not really interested in the next XBox (360 is my least used console to date), but if this is true I won't be getting it at all. Or at least after several price-downs at the end of it's run for some exclusives.

...and like I already said, the platform where, in order to experience nextgen graphics, you have to buy a PC which costs at least 2x times of what those new consoles will cost.

In Europe (EU) publishers are not allowed to refrain you from reselling your downloaded games. The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that back in July 2012. It doesn't matter if you agreed to an(y sort of) EULA.

I'm like you, but...
1. Your gamertag gets lost / corrupted / banned / w/e -- you lose access to all your games.
2. Microsoft goes under (I know, haha, but in 1983 people would laugh at the idea of Commodore and what-not going under) and they don't transition the permissions database -- you lose access to all your games.
Tons of scenarios where people who are always online and don't buy or sell used games can get burned.
I use money from second hand sales to buy newly released games. Without the money from selling my games, I would just buy less games. MS has to understand this.

That's one thing I really, really hope Sony doesn't copy with the PS4. If both consoles require a fee to play online, I might just upgrade my PC instead of buying either.
really hope this is just microsoft being awful and not a near industry wide fix for next gen from microsoft, sony and third parties as some fear :/

Also, to those people who are saying this online only thing is the same as Steam, it's not. You can play your Steam games offline.
I don't buy used or resell my games, however I live in a major city and my internet connection goes down all the time for various reasons. I recently lost it for a week due to construction in the area. If it's a matter of needing to activate a game on first use, then it's not the end of the world, but if the console needs to literally always be online to function, then I'm simply not interested.

You can go online and browse when free. But you'll be subjected to Gold ads on the dashboard for every category.
The only feature you can access is purchasing.

I don't have a problem with no second hand games because I always buy new. But my internet connection goes out randomly sometimes. If this rumor is true and Sony isn't having the same restrictions with the PS4, then Sony just got my launch day money.

This is the generation that saw the introduction of project $10 and the increasing inclusion of online-based, non-gaming services (video streaming and the like) to consoles. The idea that that new consoles will be highly dependent on greater online connectivity, which leads to things like one-time online activation of retail titles, isn't that big of a leap. It's been happening for years in the PC space, and consoles are nothing if not becoming more like PCs with each new generation.
Give us pc priced software then, in the uk pc games are way cheaper and i guess this is the same most places. If the price of a new game is £15-20 cheaper than it is now then bring it on.
