EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect

and the always online thing is already everywhere. when you play a game or open numerous apps on your iPhone, for example, it connects to the internet for a moment to retrieve your information. there's no disconnecting or any other hassle. and remember WiiConnect24 or whatever it was called? that didn't seem to bother anyone.

Remember Diablo 3? Yeah.

Bookmark this thread and come back a few months after these upcoming launches. Watch.

I agree with you HylianTom. Xbox720 with Call of Duty at launch will sell tons. The problem will be when people realize they can not buy second hand games or they can't play because they lose the connection.

For a lot of people the Xbox is their CoD machine, they will buy it if their friends do.

Most PC games require an online connection to activate them even if they are boxed copies and games like Diablo 3 are always online. You are not escaping this if you go PC, the PC model is what this is based off of.

The difference is that there's competition on PC for the cheapest games, and even the big dog, Steam, does amazing deals that mitigate the benefits of trading-in games. I'm not saying we shouldn't have the right to re-sell stuff, but the climate on PC is a lot better than a locked down console that bans used sales.

Though the architectures of the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation both resemble that of PCs, several development sources have told us that Sony’s solution is preferable when it comes to leveraging power. Studios working with the next-gen Xbox are currently being forced to work with only approved development libraries, while Sony is encouraging coders to get closer to the metal of its box. Furthermore, the operating system overhead of Microsoft’s next console is more oppressive than Sony’s equivalent, giving the PlayStation-badged unit another advantage.

I found that part the most interesting. Although isn't that how it was with 360 as well? I imagine it could make BC easier in the future.

While I can absolutely understand the hate towards no used games policy I actually like the steam approach.

Having a digital easy to access libary but still competetive pricing of the retail market will bring the standard of pc gaming to consoles with the benefit of pricing competition (like steam codes from amazon etc. And unlike xbox live and psn current praxis), unfortunately that has to come with a used games restriction.

No way...no fucking way.

Wii U+PS4 only for me if true.

People complained about always online thing with D3 but this did not prevent the game from selling like 8 millions in 3 days .

So i guess same thing will happen with this .

Uh no. Comparing one 39.99 PC game which is mainly played online anyway to a whole console is a huge stretch.

I'm sick of this attitude. Why do game devs think they're God sent and second-hand free? I buy a car, I can resell it, I buy a house, I can resell it, I buy [insert anything], I can resell it. But not games? WTF? First sale doctrine applies here my friend, whether you like it or not. And if European Commission is right, resale of digital games is on it's way, too.
So call Gamestop and other folks who live off your work by selling $55 used games next to $60 new in the first week of sale and stop trying to screw the consumer over.

Oh, and I don't even buy second hand games but I fully support the option.
Games are going to be so expensive to make. Money needs to be recouped somehow.

They could at least charge a little extra on used games so that Microsoft or Sony can gain something from it or at least the developers.

I dont agree in buying used games cause I like to think from both sides of the fence and by doing that I can see how harmful it can be to developers

Wow. Big rumour this one.

While the inability to purchase pre-owned games doesn't bother me, the inability to flush my library every now and again with an eBay scourge, does. That's more a practical issue.

The always online thing is more of a principle issue for me. While in reality, my console will probably always be connected to the internet anyway, I don't like the fact that they insist that I have to have it in that state to access the core functionality.

I find it hard to believe that this is a unilateral move on MS's part, due to the wider implications for both the consumer and the retail sector. However, if indeed this is being driven by 3rd party publishers, and MS has gone this route alone, then I'd expect to see more exclusive content find its way to the Xbox, ahead of the Orbis. Things like timed exclusives, DLC, maybe even full exclusivity in some cases.

At the end of the day though, this is all based on a simple rumour which may or may not be rooted in truth and if it is, then it is may not be the whole story. Will just have to wait and see.

I buy the vast majority of my games new, so the used thing doesn't really bother me. My only concern is that since games don't stay in print for long compared to, say, movies or books, it's going to be hard to find games that bomb or are more than a couple of years old new.

Presumably both next-gen consoles will have all retail games available for purchase digitally, and we know what that means: that game from three years ago that you can probably find used for $10 somewhere? $60, please. The pricing model for digital games on consoles is shit, and I don't expect that to change.

Always online is just ridiculous, though. When I moved recently I was without an Internet connection for over a week while I was waiting to be connected. So much for passing the time by playing a game.

In short, I don't see measures against used games being apocalyptically bad, but I'm not buying this if the PS4 comes out and doesn't do it.

To people thinking Sony will be the savior of your monies, you're really putting your faith into Sony- the biggest proponent of price gauging and proprietary hardware in the electronics world? I used to be a huge Sony fan and in a lot of ways, I still respect them as a company. However, everyone knows they have an obsession with SOMETHING that will make their items more expensive than others. Whether it be memory sticks, proprietary memory cards, or whatever. I wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 was $100 but then you had to buy a separate $500 power plug because the proprietary one that comes with the PS4 has 8 prongs. Don't get me wrong, the other companies price gauge too (Xbox with Xbox Live and Nintendo with plastic "accessories"), but Sony definitely is not exempt from doing it.

Not really interested in the next XBox (360 is my least used console to date), but if this is true I won't be getting it at all. Or at least after several price-downs at the end of it's run for some exclusives.

haha internet required and no second hand games?

Good to see microsoft is doing away with the rabble and only selecting clients that are RICH AS FUCK. They should charge triple the price of the nearest competitor and only sell it on jameslist.com

how will this not just be a retardely expensive an inferior version of a steambox?

In Europe (EU) publishers are not allowed to refrain you from reselling your downloaded games. The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that back in July 2012. It doesn't matter if you agreed to an(y sort of) EULA.

Eurogamer article about this.

I'm curious how Microsoft and Sony will solve this in Europe.

Interpreting the article as saying always online is a bit of a stretch, are people just going off the topic title?

The author of the article used it in his title, so I'm not sure how else to take a direct quote. lol.

Anyways, how else would you interpret this as the opening to the article:

Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform.

The most important thing is the first sentence really.

it this is true I hope Sony does not copy the no second hand game thing... you never know when you'll need the bargain bin... I am addicted to digital download right now but I like my options

With how much accuracy can we take this Info fellow GAFfers?

I mean I can believe the no second-hand games since it's Microsoft we are talking about but the Always Online seems a bit too much because it is a service that can fail from our providers and that is not something they or we can control it.

so I'm the only one who is always online when I use my 360 and doesent really buy used games....

well then I'm ok with this.

*hides

I'm like you, but...

1. Your gamertag gets lost / corrupted / banned / w/e -- you lose access to all your games.
2. Microsoft goes under (I know, haha, but in 1983 people would laugh at the idea of Commodore and what-not going under) and they don't transition the permissions database -- you lose access to all your games.

Tons of scenarios where people who are always online and don't buy or sell used games can get burned.

I use money from second hand sales to buy newly released games. Without the money from selling my games, I would just buy less games. MS has to understand this.

The part that is referencing the NVidia guy's blog post is hinky. It seems like an amalgamation of previous rumblings.

That reminds me of something I thought in the past.

"Surely they wouldn't make a console where you have to pay for ... oh wait, Xbox Live."

That's one thing I really, really hope Sony doesn't copy with the PS4. If both consoles require a fee to play online, I might just upgrade my PC instead of buying either.

really hope this is just microsoft being awful and not a near industry wide fix for next gen from microsoft, sony and third parties as some fear :/

anyway everything about the new xbox sounds so unappealing so far. as if paid online (+netflix access) and the ad infested dashboard weren't bad enough, but no used games. gross.

Also, to those people who are saying this online only thing is the same as Steam, it's not. You can play your Steam games offline.

I don't buy used or resell my games, however I live in a major city and my internet connection goes down all the time for various reasons. I recently lost it for a week due to construction in the area. If it's a matter of needing to activate a game on first use, then it's not the end of the world, but if the console needs to literally always be online to function, then I'm simply not interested.

...and like I already said, the platform where, in order to experience nextgen graphics, you have to buy a PC which costs at least 2x times of what those new consoles will cost.

Sure a PC might be more expensive but it does more than just play games.

Forgive me for my ignorance, but how does one go about selling one's digital games?

I don't have a problem with no second hand games because I always buy new. But my internet connection goes out randomly sometimes. If this rumor is true and Sony isn't having the same restrictions with the PS4, then Sony just got my launch day money.

I see no reason why you couldn't do the same thing with the Next Xbox. They aren't going to tie your purchases to the console. It's going to be exactly like it is now. It's tied to your account so you can play your content on any Xbox as long as you log-in to your account (share it with a friend then). The only time it's tied to the console is for the first device you purchase it on so other users on your console in the home can play that game. This is what we have now but with "online" passes for offline games.

Personally I don't find that to be an ideal solution for the used game issue. Hopefully one day we will be able to sell or trade digital games.

I don't know. Didn't Sony limit the number of times you can access your account on a new system?

Let's not forget this is still a rumor. I have hard time believing this.

This is the generation that saw the introduction of project $10 and the increasing inclusion of online-based, non-gaming services (video streaming and the like) to consoles. The idea that that new consoles will be highly dependent on greater online connectivity, which leads to things like one-time online activation of retail titles, isn't that big of a leap. It's been happening for years in the PC space, and consoles are nothing if not becoming more like PCs with each new generation.

Wasn't there some article online talking about how used games DON'T negatively impact the games industry? I feel like maybe Pachter said something along those lines? I don't know.

Here's the thing, all you guys freaking out: Can't MS/Sony just defend this by saying, HEY YOU FUCKERS, this has ALWAYS been the case on PC! Get over it!-?

Give us pc priced software then, in the uk pc games are way cheaper and i guess this is the same most places. If the price of a new game is £15-20 cheaper than it is now then bring it on.

Games to hit bomba prices a week after launch. That'd sweeten the pill slightly.

Still, I'm not buying the rumour as it currently stands.
