EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect

I don't believe this, sounds like 100% rumor 0% fact. If it is true though I guess PS 4 will be my only console.

Does anyone really think that Microsoft will adopt a system that prevents you from playing if the internet conection is off? Waste of time to discuss it.

About block second hand, is more plausible, but I don't see Microsoft doing this without Sony doing too.

That's what happened the last time when my internet was on the blink and I couldn't play my games on Steam.

oh boy, this could be bad.....

1. Will consumers flock to the ps4 and make publishers develop for it?

Or

2. Will developers push the demand to the 360 by making exclusive games for it as a way to skip out on the second hand market?

In my mind number 1 seems more likely...

If this is true, what an opportunity Sony has here. If they market the PS4 as a true, more powerful gaming console with free online, etc., this could be a whole new level of PS2-like dominance for Sony.

Now it makes sense to me why they are going first. They know the next Xbox's specs and what it is, and they do not fear.

If MS implements a always on 3G chip similiar to what Amazon did with their Kindle, then yes. Always Online in the sense that the machine will always have a chance to connect to a server and check for licenses on the console and the account.

My first reaction was, "It won't matter. Microsoft had millions ball-an-chained to its paid online services with no backlash this generation." My second reaction was, "If true, hope it fails miserably."

If this happens I can see a major crash in the industry as prices adjust, games stores go bankrupt, casuals lose interest or look elsewhere. Nintendo could actually benefit hugely.

Hackers will have a field day. They'll have a tonne of support in getting second hand games working, and then you will have an underground market in second hands.

Interesting times. <hugs PC>
It's weird because the PC ecosystem does all this?

so I'm the only one who is always online when I use my 360 and doesent really buy used games....

well then I'm ok with this.

*hides
Same here. However, there are people who have unreliable internet, people who just don't want to create an account to do stuff online and there are people who finance gaming by selling old games and just paying a fraction of the price of the new game.

To me, this all looks like a bit of a gamble. Not a single publisher, platform holder or anyone has ever shown any realy numbers that would suggest that second hand sales cut into new game sales. Not a single one of them. They've made claims left and right but there has never been any proof at all.

Even if all of this is true people will eventually acquiesce and convince themselves it's ok the same way they convinced themselves miscrosoft was justified in locking out multiplayer games with a mandatory subscription. I imagine people were initially furious about that bullshit, but now most people accept it. People are weak.

"Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect"

Three out of four of those are key words for a bad experience.

There are no words if true. BOMBA

I just can’t see the console having to be online constantly to function to be true. It just can’t be. We have to be missing something, because if it’s true Microsoft is kinda screwed. Like seriously.

And I really hope people aren’t shocked when Sony inevitably jumps on the no second-hand games bandwagon. If Microsoft do it Sony will do it...best to just accept it now if the rumour is true.

I'd say the platform where game prices reflect that reality.

this would be the platform where I paid €24.99 for Sonic allstars racing months after I bought it for €27 on ps3? where borderlands 2 and far cry 3 are still €49.99 while the disc versions float around €25-30? cmon now I like steam but dont try to act like steam sales are the same as the day to day reality of buying a game on steam

So what happens if your internet connection drops? Does the console shut itself off? Does it RRoD?

If there's an outage in your area well too bad! You can't play any of your xbox 720 games. Go sit in the corner til you have internet you monster.

This won't happen, and I'd be surprised if it even mattered if it was true. Not that I agree with it, but the majority of people just seem to buy anything these days.

Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform.

It is believed that games purchased on disc will ship with activation codes, and will have no value beyond the initial user.

Furthermore, the operating system overhead of Microsoft’s next console is more oppressive than Sony’s equivalent, giving the PlayStation-badged unit another advantage.

Also think of all the people both in the US and throughout the world that have crappy internet that disconnects from their system/computer regularly. Hell, even I occasionally get signed out of XBLA randomly sometimes when playing on my 360.

Either Microsoft made a deal with publishers to get exclusive games, or they know Sony will do the same (maybe even worked it out together)

If true, of course.

I would hope that the people at Sony would be clever enough to see that not doing it unlike their competitor would a huge perk they could sell to their consumers.

I think that people will flick to the ps4 and everyone is going to make games for ps4, even though they hate second hand games, they want sales

Yeah. I’m calling bullshit.

It'll be the biggest PR disaster in the history of PR disasters if Kinect even comes close to really being a spy on the customer.

Can you imagine the 1984 comparisons. MS would tarnish their entire company.
Thing is...I can see them saying 'but google--!'.

Surely not...
The OS is for Kinect and I suspect constant calculations of complex 3D images and needing to source those; but I can't believe MS would truely be stupid enough to use your internet connection to go sending information on Kinect back to them.

I mean...their not that stupid are they?

It all sort of lines up if you squint and look at it from a funny angle. The problem is that I think Ballmer is stupid enough to force something like this through and just stick it in the EULA.

Why have Kinect running all the time and set aside resources for it to run all the time if they are not going to use it all the time, even when you are playing a game that doesn't use Kinect, or watching something on Netflix or a Blu-ray. It's the setting aside of 3GB that worries me, and in tandem with the possibility of always on internet, it's heading down a bad road. Maybe I'm just being paranoid though.

This is true. For some reason the fact that Steam have sales once or twice a year somehow blinds people to their ridiculous prices the rest of the time (added to that is the fact that Amazon, GMG, etc. seem to offer superior sales, which isnt really here or there I suppose)

I think I may need to skip next generation consoles, the hype balloon didn't burst in excitement but rather inflated in disappointment.

So it might be PC and Wii U for next gen.

They're going to have add serious replay value to thier games for me to buy this.

Pay for the multiplayer seperately and by god you'll never have to buy a game again.

On a serious matter. Your statement is true of many, not by choice - but the nature of life. If people are forced to buy retail only games, only one thing will happen. Prices will go up as retailers and publishers look to extract the same total revenue from a smaller number of buyers.

Within this market the bigger the licence; the better you are. No other company can replicate FIFA or Iron Man. No one. So customers buying that stuff buy that stuff; the only competitor? The second hand market. Remove it - those prices will rise as there is less competition.

With this. Peoples money is taken up on a select number of games, instead of having a wide spread influence on the industry. The final outcome of this is very simple. Publishers will compete on licenced games and not on their home grown brands.

Now sure. COD is a big fucking licence owned and water tight! Just like Mario is. However. Those games create their own value; something like FIFA has value that can't be replicated - starting with player names; clubs and tradmarks. Gameplay only goes on top.

Welcome to the future kids!
- Less choice
- Less developers
- Less games
- Less creativity
- Quality will drop over time
- Higher Prices

The people who stand to gain the most from this is actually one company. EA.
FIFA will rise in price if there is no second hand market, its not even 'evil'; EA will have to do it just to compete for the licence.

Say Activison call up all the clubs and knowing they'll make the price £70 compared to EA's £50; are able to bid a higher amount for their trademarks. Activision now has the rights and licences. In order to compete with Activision; EA have to bid more, in order to do so they need to match that £70 price tag.

Welcome to the future. Either this crashes Xbox or it crashes the industry.
Woot woot?

Surely they wouldn't be dumb enough to make a console that needs to constantly be online. This will make my decision on which console to get extremely fucking easy if true.

Next gen production is gonna be so expensive. Gotta squeeeeze every penny u can out of every game.

The only thing this will do is concentrate sales on the most AAA(AAA...) of games while everything else that can't compete in marketing or production values (lol) will be moved to digital and other platforms. If you thought B/C-games were coming back, this would be the final nail in their coffin.

So why isn't this possible now though?

Well, for Physical copies, technically it already is. Its a blurry line cause its a licence, but EULAs arent as legal here in the EU as they are in the USA. So generally we're protected from EULAs in which we sign of our right to redistribute. Since physical copies already ensure that only one person at any time can own a copy, there is no need for an additional law. It is required for DD but it will soon be applied there too.

The crux of the decision hinges on the issue of copyright exhaustion. If rights are exhausted, the non-transferability clauses found in a typical license has no effect. For off-the-shelf software sold on physical carriers, it is accepted that once the developer sells the carrier, its exclusive distribution rights are exhausted and the acquirer may resell the software to anyone. Whether this also applies to software acquired through downloading from the developer’s website is the question posed. German courts were of the opinion that such dealings violate the developer’s copyrights.

I'm not saying MS and Sony cant try this, but I am saying that one could do a successful lawsuit to force them to allow it.
