Asahi: PlayStation 4 to be over 40,000 yen

I'll probably wait until it's £300 - it will be better to wait until it has some games and it's not like I don't have a backlog of games to work through.

Lets say the rumors are spot on regarding the specs of the PS4.
Would 400 USD make it profitable or sold at a small loss?

I really hope the price is 400 though, even though i'll probably end up paying more like 500+ here in sweden...

$400 loosely converts to ~£255, so let's say £299 after 'complexities'.

Yep roughly £255 but the $400 figure doesn't include tax, add on 20% V.A.T for us in the U.K thats £306. I'm expecting a price around £329/£349 anything under that would be a bonus for me.

knowing sony, they probably crammed as much in there while trying to keep it at a certain price point. it's the same reason they can't drop the price of the vita. they probably won't make you buy something else for it though.

I think at £349 it sounds like an OK price but at that price I'm probably only going to be able to afford one of the new next generation consoles (either the PS4 or next Xbox) and some games at launch.

Unless I can really save some some extra cash from now until the consoles release this year.

I think it might be more telling to look at the Japanese -> pound conversion on recent launches.

Vita (wifi) was 24980 yen -> £230 (RRP)

Wii U (premium) 31,500 yen -> £300 (typical retail price)

Both of those kinds of conversions put against 40,000 suggest something > £350.

Above £350? I really hope not...

The PS3 was £425 RRP and most paid £400 with a game, but most people thought it was way too expensive. Both Sony and Microsoft have got to be really careful with pricing.

I'm hoping with all the additional pay services and expanding PS+ ect, they can come in lower than expected on the console price. It'll be interesting which way they have to go.

40,000 Yen is roughly £272 + V.A.T = roughly £326/£327.

Under £350 should be possible.

It amazes me how almost everyone is talking about $400, when the article clearly says OVER 40,000 yen.

I'm expecting $449 for the basic SKU, and $499 for the desirable SKU.

And things in Japan are often not priced at even numbers like they are in the U.S. and U.K.. Game systems also tend to carry a slight premium in Japan over their U.S. release.

A 41,000 to 42,000 yen Japanese price could quite easily result in a $399 U.S. release, and a €300 + VAT price for European release (though probably more like €350, with how Sony and MS traditionally price for Europe).

Its not much info to go on, "over" 40,000 yen could be anything from 40,001 yen to infinity, though you'd assume if it was at or over 50,000 yen they would have phrased it that way instead, so this just gives us a ~$100 ballpark.

In essence then, good for the consumer. For sony, not so much.

We'll definitely have to pay more in Scandinavia, atleast in Denmark and Sweden - Sony doesn't have a PlayStation office in those countries and the assholes at Nordisk Film (who's Sony's middle man) will definitely have us pay more than it's recommended price. Remember Kaz Hirai saying "299 worldwide"? Yeah that didn't happen here... Until Webhallen started slicing the price, almost monthly. Followed by Elkjøp/Elgiganten.
We have to have faith that the retailers follow the recommended price that Sony sets and not the price Nordisk Film sets.

How can people be fine with a 400 price when they don't even know what games are coming out? I want to know the whole deal before saying this kind of stuff.

I usually wait a couple of years to buy consoles. when the prices are arround 250 for solo console or 300 with a pack in game i want.

yeah, lets hope so... unless "over 40000" literally means anything above, then we are screwed.

They are obviously not making a lot of money with PS3 being around $250 right now, so I am not sure how realistic is to expect PS4 to be $399 when it will have a lot more expensive components, including RAM and APU

For me I am beginning to tire over these consoles and I want a new piece of hardware to give new life into the games I play.

Because I like a lot of the developers that work with Sony and am confident that those developers will put out things I want.

The way Prime Minister Abe is running things, by the time the PS4 comes out, 40,000 yen will be about $300. Great news for overseas buyers!

(The value of the yen has collapsed from 77 to the dollar before his election to 94 today, and people are predicting even further drops. As one of the millions of diligent savers living in Japan who feels that having a stable currency should be a basic human right, I feel that Abe's actions are treasonous.)

Why do Americans get all the consoles so cheap compared to us Europeans? We pay 50% more and make less money than the average american.....

Well, to start with, your prices typically include the egregious 15-20% consumption taxes that your governments charge you, whereas in the US, if something is subject to tax, it's added on to the price (because sales taxes vary significantly between states and even within states).

Aside from that, you have my sympathies.

Got to help those exporters.

Yes it is always good to see a new generation of consoles. It brings a lot of exitement. hoping for some good ps4 exclusives and new ip's.

Because America has big guns and is always waving them in other countries' faces. You don't wan't them to get mad at you, so you give them good deals.

Companies are quick to use exchange rates in their favour, but not to adjust to less favourable rates for them. And what can people do (besides importing, which has its onw downsides) when all companies use a really outdated conversion of the US dollar to the Canadian one? Or establish a tradition for the same sticker with different currency symbols between US/Eurozone? Or even worse for some countries with other currencies, make it the same number with more zeroes while mightily rounding up in that process.

You see, Europe should start some wars, too ;)

A few things:

1. 400 would be an amazing price point to start at to get the ball rolling positively with consumers.

2. Why are there no early leaks of the PS4 chassis if they're going to release this year?

3. How early did we get leaks of the PS3 slim before it was released gofreak?

4. Imagine if Sony announces on Feb 20th that the New Playstation Orbis will be available this summer... and then at the end of their E3 conference they tell every one that they're available for purchase the day/week after their conference!!! That would be all Apple style and would be unprecedented in approach in the gaming industry, right?

I hope it happens this way for the sake of Europe; that way they have a chance of getting the system before next year. And I live in America.

They've suffered enough.

Wow... good news for importers I guess.

Depending on several factors, would have no problem buying at 400$.

Unfortunately I live in Europe, so even though our average wage is like half of the US, it'll be priced 400€ most surely (500+$).

Hasn't Japanese industrial exports severely suffered due to the high yen? And isn't it a good thing for the Japanese economy that the yen is leveling out with the dollar? I don't know much about economics but I find this stuff interesting... like, how has the yen value collapsed so much in so little time? Inflation/overprinting of yen?

To my knowledge a weak currency is good for exports because it makes goods cheaper, but it sucks if you are a saver in that country.

The big question will be BC, perhaps a premium model for 499 with BC, 399 without.

Regardless, 399 launch price will be a pretty significant boost for the platform.

I wonder if later this month that part will be revealed.

If its $399 and has no stupid stuff like second hand restriction and always online then I can defintely see myself going next gen sooner than I usually do.

The price will keep it both competitive as a new console and against the WiiU.

They must hit a good number for the price even if they take a slight loss I think.

Damn, this thread has me realizing I'm going to have to camp out to get a PS4 this year :(

I thought I might be able to sneak to a Best Buy a couple of hours early on launch day based on muted WiiU response... Fak.

What are you fools doing?1 If they see that most people think that 400 is reasonable then they will jack the price up!!

jk, At 399.99 I will pre-order and pickup day one. I honestly expected 499.99.

I hope they don't do another low storage option like they did with ps3. The smaller the hard drive the less digital games people buy.

Neither the Orbis or Durango would do well at that price imo.

However, if there is content there day 1 for PS+ members - say a couple of free PSN games and some reasonable discounts of retail equivalents - the PS4 would be much more attractive. BC would be an absolute gem and selling point, but I don't believe Sony will provide it :/.

Well it would more likly be converted from Yen to £ which at just 40000 means £272. Plus 20% VAT is £326. That's not factoring in anything else.

My prediction is that if it is $€400 then it'll be £350.
