Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

For the WiiU version they couldn't even be bothered to change the right stick camera to analog instead of 8 way digital control? It really is a straight up port.

we need a monster hunter FAQ up in here, seems like a lot of new comers
Yeah I was just thinking, whoever makes the OT for this should probably include a newbie guide to which weapons are easy to start with, the basics of each weapon type, picking up and making the most of your supply items, buffing, etc.

Since I want to give this game a fair chance I keep trying different weapons. I tried the Dual Blades and I am actually having a MUCH better time now, any other weapons similar to this one?

Longsword has the same sort of fluid feel to it if you'd like a two-hander.

I'm considering a lot of different directions for the OT. It's a balancing act...

I don't even know how you can say that the game is ugly. What is a beautiful 3DS game to you?

It's so good graphically on 3DS I hope Capcom licenses out its engine to other 3DS developers.

The game looks and plays beautifully.

UI is really bad. Font is really awful, almost to the point where it's hard to read.

I think the monster models looked really good, but the environment has this washed out look to me.

I finally managed to just barely take down Plesioth within the time limit (sad it took me this long since I've played both MHFU and Tri extensively.) Used my weapon of choice, Switch Axe, and just had to take every single opportunity to attack. Using the shock trap and a flash bomb helped.

This game has self shadowing.

A 3DS game has self shadowing.

I haven't seen that since SSFIV3D.
I'm assuming it's basically the same engine though (MT Framework Mobile, right?).

I haven't been using the touch screen much. By management you mean selecting which items you want to use for example without having to press L+button? If that's the case I definitely see that being pretty handy.

Yep. And it doesn't break up what's going on on-screen nor change/stop/break-up your controls, so you can use it without worrying about your movement.

Man, the 3DS controls are terrible, what a bummer.

I was playing Freedom Unite on PSP today, so I have a good frame of reference. The camera there is easier to use based on the button placement: analog for movement at the bottom, camera options above your fingers (d-pad and L button)

On the 3DS, the analog for movement is in the middle and the camera options are above and below you, this makes it really cumbersome to keep the camera moving and breaks the gameplay flow considerably.

Not a terrible thing for the land stuff, but turns the underwater fights into a mess. Fighting the Lagi in the swamp with these controls will be a nightmare.

Wii U version is perfect though, even moreso after the patch.

Not sure I understand your description. The monster target makes adjustments something you only do once in a while though and it works fine. I would like the digital dpad to be a bit smaller to minimize movement but this can be adjusted in the final version. Definitely a vast improvement over PSP controls.

For new hunters:

1) start with Dual Swords, Sword and Shield or Lance (Lance especially to learn monster patterns)

2)DO NOT GET GREEDY. Roll out or move away after 3-4 combo attack unless the monster is down or trapped

3)Don't use potions etc near monster. use them when they are far or focusing on other players

4)Always keep your weapons sharpened.

Most importantly, you will probably fail or barely scrape by at first but you WILL get better with practice. This isn't your modern hand-holding cinematic visceral game. You will be proud of yourself once you master the weapons and monster.

Welcome to Monster Hunting. This game, playing online with friends, will be one of your most memorable gaming experiences.

When in a room with a big monster tap the monsters icon in the lower right if your touch screen and a target should appear on the icon. It's now set to center on the monster when you tap L.
try this makes it easier.

What?

Having a blast with the greatsword. I wouldn't advise newcomers using it unless you want to hate the game from the get go. GS is all about sneaking in a hit, dodging and then sheathing. A bit tedious for some, perhaps, but extremely rewarding when you get a perfect charged unsheathing slash.
Basically, how you play the game is trying not to get hit while hitting monsters, taking into account animation lengths and attack patterns. Sounds like any other game, but MH is more akin to a fighting game in that respect than a Devil May Cry, if that makes any sense.

if you look under your health/stamina bar you see a blade glowing blue, this is your weapon sharpness. Weapons have various levels of sharpness, depending on how upgraded the weapon is. Sharpness gives your weapons a damage bonus, so its always a good idea to sharpen them when there's a slow point in the battle, or if your sharpness falls (the game will tell you when that happens)

Use a whetstone item to sharpen it

Another thing to add to lizardus' post:

Generally it is ALWAYS better to dodge out of finished attack combos because it will get you out of the way of an attack, and will end the attack animation quicker (I guess number 2 kinda covers this)

Learn the dodge/roll. Beginners will find it a great way to simply get out of the way of attacks, and advanced players can time the "invincible" frames to dodge through big attacks

Weapons loose sharpness as you hit things with them/perform certain moves, causing them to do less damage and what the weapon can penetrate through.
The gauge under your health bar that looks like a blade indicates sharpness.

You can use whetstones to resharpen your weapon if it gets dull.

EDIT: Beaten by a better explanation.

Either way, after reading this thread there are too many people defending the game. Everyone gets something different of the game and I feel like the silly camera issues is something they should fix. Fighting control shouldn't be something we have to do in a game. The challenge should come from other areas. This is my opinion, of course, but after playing the demo I can easily see why people wouldn't like it.

I know this comment was a while back, but I want to address this. As MH fans, we have been literally begging for Capcom to localize these games for years. We completely missed out on the last major entry in the series along with at least 3 spinoff games. So for some of us it feels like we need to do everything we can to try to help people understand this game, because it's so easy to dismiss after 5-10 minutes of play if it doesn't "click," and if these don't perform well, this may be the last MH game we see in the west.

Given the size of the 3DS userbase combined with the amount of Wii U owners desperate to buy something for their shiny new system, there's potential for this game to do pretty well I think. I just hope it does well enough to convince Capcom that enough western gamers like MH to justify continued localization of the series.

Just tried both Demos, so awesome! Ready to start my Monster Hunter addiction all over again!~

It's already got ahold of me :( Loving these dual swords, absolutely tore up Lagombi

my biggest gripe with the (3ds) demo is that the text is kinda blurry and the player icon on the map is so small i can't tell which way it points

the tutorials could definitely use some work.

Is there even a tutorial? I didn't see any. I downloaded this demo yesterday and a few of my friends tried it (including me). I keep telling them that I think this game is popular for a reason, but nobody liked it. They should have told you at least a bit of explanatation, jesus. I'll give it another try, sad to see that it's not more open to newcomers. Saying that that lightning speed Bunny gliding asshole is EASY is what makes it frustrating too.

This demo has made me weary of picking up the game. I'd never played an MH game until this demo and I found it somewhat clunky, and the boss fight was long and tedious. What's the draw with MH?

The hunting aspect and in the case of Japan its the fact that they play with all their friends.

no, you don't. you got used to one style on PSP and are now having trouble with another style on 3DS. the irony of MH vets complaining about controls is gold though.

Complaining about the way the buttons are laid out in a system is not complaining about the controls the game presents. The controls in the game are fine, the control solutions the 3DS as a system offers are terrible.

Edit: yeah, the monster target toggle helps, but its still not a great solution for underwater stuff.

did you try tapping on the map, it zooms in.

Be proud of me MHGaf. Irrespective of noobness I best both quests on the first go. Although the combat is much faster, Dark souls payed off.

Well done good sir. I played a gross amount of MH3 and the underwater controls on 3DS got the best of me, ran out of time. Definitely picking up that CPP XL at launch. The lock on worked well enough for me on land though.

I don't think the demo does but I was referring mainly to the actual game not teaching you much beyond the basic controls.

If you have the time, watch earvcunanan's stream to get an idea how a more experienced player hunts.

I'm streaming now [in 720p] if you guys and gals want to watch me try out the different weapons against the two monsters in the demo:

okay tried dual blade as people suggested, beat novice mission
alot easier then sluggish characters, can hit like 5-7 times compare to once and roll easily.

Still not sure on camera controls, buy it later on when cheaper

Plesioth done!

Mangled up his headfin something fierce, chased em back to his lair and finished the job.

Was playing on WUUUUU

Played the 3DS demo. Game looks great, colors are washed out though, text is all blurry and the 3D effect is pretty crappy especially when your hands are all jerking around.

Gameplay was typical MH. The camera being on touch screen was nice though.

I'm not sold on this. I think I'll pass. The PSP MH games failed to hook me and I think so did this version. I really want to like this franchise but I guess I'm just not hardcore enough.

And Plesios runs away for the fourth time in one round. Nope. Sorry, Gaf. 3DS version is done. I'll try WiiU tomorrow.

I managed to take down the first boss with the hammer chick, is that an accomplishment? It felt so fucking slow and clunky, yet powerful.

lol yeah imo WiiU is the way to go if you can.

I'd have to agree, unless you're a MH fanatic who needs that MH fill on the go also(me)

When you learn the hammer, it can be incredibly fun. Go for the head, if you hit em enough you can stun monsters and get lots of damage in.

One of the things with slower moving weapons (GS, Hammer) you'll want to sheathe your weapon and move in fast and go in for a swinging unsheathe attack, its much more effective then trying to move in with your weapon drawn (except when going for a super pound with the hammer)
