Knack (PS4) Announced

I thought that one gameplay clip in the trailer looked very nice. At least a nice step up from any of the games this gen with a cartoony aesthetic.

I don't know why but reminds me a nintendo game.

I wasn't impressed at all at the conference but watching the trailer again I found it interesting. I think it needs a demo to show its full potential.

And pixar graphics lol

I really like the look of this.

I wonder how deep the exploration will go. Would be cool if we could search for rare artifacts that when built into Knack gave him special abilities.

no need for demo man, with ps4, you can just try it from the ps store and start playing immediately, the game download in the background while you play and if you like it, you can simply buy it. :)

Some gifs which i made from other thread:

Its really strange but Im getting a small Crash Bandicoot from this.

That, and the name "Knack" is similiar to "Crash".

The new trailer was better.

It isn't easy to judge by the trailer which type of game this will be since there isn't a lot of gameplay. However, i'm definately interested if this turns out to be similar to something like Ratchet and clank.

I must admit that the artstyle isn't as exciting as i would have hoped though. But i'll reserve judgement on that until i've seen more (gameplay) footage. At this point, i'm grateful and happy that these types of games are still made and i'm excited to find out more about this game.

Loved the look but i wanted more than just a beat em up. Some great detail on the characters, so i hoped it would be more of an adventure title. Hopefully the game has more to it than just fighting dudes.

I thnk he has massive potential to be Sony's next gen mascot. Was looking to pick up a game in this genre at launch with nex gen gfx. This will fit the bill nicely. I believe this game will be a sleeper hit and will surprise people with its gfx and gameplay. Love the fact that the creator worked on jak and crash series. That's all I needed to hear. Remote play on the vita looked flawless as well. Day 1.

he need a cartoon series and a toy line or something.

It was a great pleasure to be able to introduce the title at the PlayStation Meeting in New York. With our new project, Knack, we are really trying to take advantage of everything that the PlayStation 4 supports, from the graphics capabilities of the platform to the physics simulation necessary to handle our very unique hero. Over the years I’ve been involved in a number of character-based action titles – Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet & Clank – and with the gameplay of Knack, we’re trying to focus on the essential fun behind the action/platform gameplay. I’m hoping that we can make something that excites those that played the classic games back in the day, as well as something that attracts new fans to the genre.
During the game Knack also discovers that he has a skill (in other words, a knack!) that allows him to incorporate ice, metal and other substances into his body, giving him new abilities from level to level. The result is gameplay which is a little bit like Crash Bandicoot, and a little bit like Katamari Damacy, in that the Knack can get quite large indeed. There’s also a touch of God of War in there, in that there is an epic feel to the game in places.

Looks like a "developer game". Like "How do we show the awesome power of PS4? I know! The character is made of thousands of little pieces and each of those pieces is strikingly detailed on their own!" The game could turn out good but that was my first impression, especially when it is the console architect directing the game. He's gotta show da power of his baby.

Compare that to a similar concept. Katamari also has you collecting thousands of things but the thought process behind it is the complete opposite. That was a guy with no technical background proposing "What if I could roll everything into a ball?"

I don't know....this looked a little more appealing than Kameo but both are pretty unappealing in terms of art and character design to my eyes.

I was thinking about this today. What if Knack was a collectathon platformer that had to collecting those shapes, and every shape you collect adds to your character in real time. Say there are 100,000 pieces throughout the world, and you must collect certain amounts to grow large enough to do certain things. I think it would be a lot cooler than the usual limitless sized coin purse collectathons usually do.

What you said would be cool indeed.

Jak and Daxter collect-a-thon is not limitless like coins in Mario games, actually, you need to collect every single one of those 2000 orbs to get the secret ending I think.

it's not that impossible really, they're not hidden for the most part, and the game tell you exactly how many orbs you're missing in each area, so it's a matter of see which area you missed and explore the shit out of that area.

it's actually felt pretty rewarding when I got it all.

That sounds similar. I guess I was thinking those shapes would be floating around pre-existing around the world, much like coins and gems in older platformers. But I guess that might seem a little odd nowadays to some people. So perhaps the blue orb thing sucks in materials and converts them into those shapes. I liked my idea because you'd actually see the pieces fly onto his arms, legs, torso and such and you'd be seeing him grow live. It would be a completionist's dream.

It looks like a game born of a tech demo, not a negative thing as long as it has substance.

Art style is okay, but I'm impressed with the image quality.

When I say limitless coin purse, I mean Mario, Jack, Ratchet and Donkey Kong just stuff whatever they are collecting in some sort of hyperchamber pocket of infinite space and the number ticker goes up. Knack could actually show a real-time change in your character from collecting. Not the kind of change like getting a mushroom in Mario, where Mario just goes into a growth animation. I mean you'd see him grow organically with the world becoming a part of him.

Looks like a "developer game".

It is created by Mark which you may thank for:

- Sonic (he literaly rehired lead developer after Sega fired him and brought him to US and was directly involved with how Sonic was created)
- Crash
- Spyro
- Rachet&Clank
- Jack and Dexter

Now you say "developer game" but next year your kids will make you buy Knack plush character.

I think it could be fun and will probably be humorous as well. I can always go for a lighthearted, technically impressive change of pace. It will be nice to have a different sort of flavor as a launch title (assuming it is) to balance out games like Killzone: SF, inFAMOUS: SS and Drive Club. In which case, it looks like there will be a variety and that is great.

The more i look that game and the more i think it's actually the most next gen of all game showed (apart from the Capcom one).

On a simple and pretty classical surface, it's rendered and animated in a way that doesn't feel like the video game i've seen this gen. It totally feels like an animated cgi movie (Ok maybe not a Pixar one but you get my point).

Also it feels like what would be a game on a Nintendo next gen console :p

Actually this feels amazing.
We're totally there, at the point where you can have a videogame where you don't see anything that breaks the magic. No apparent polys, textures.. Look at the hand of the bad guy falling on the ground on the right, the way his fingers are bouncing... it almost makes me wonder if this isn't faked lol. There is something magical about that gif, like an old school videogame coming to life.

You know its weird. The more visually realistic games get its hardware to tell the generational leap. Thats why I think this game shows next gen capabilities the most. I mean it definitely looks like a next gen platformer.

I am aware of his contributions. That doesn't change my assessment of the game. Like I said it could be a good game, it most likely will be because Cerny (and that stomp gif looks really cool), but the driving force behind its creation is to be a showpiece for the PS4.

When i saw this during the press conference i wasn't really impressed (probably because i was biting my nails in anticipation of seeing the next Killzone)... but after a second look, i am pretty hyped. Looks as though this should appeal to the Mario crowd, offer amazing visuals, and creative gameplay.

Is it a launch title?
