Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

Interesting. I fought the rabbit wombat snow boss and I was just slashing like crazy. I didn't think it mattered where I hit him. So with ranged weapons you get to target reticle? Seems like it would be difficult to hit the top part of a monster with a melee weapon.

Some melee weapons have an upswing that might be able to hit Lagombi's head. I just attack its hind legs to make it fall over, and then go for the head.

That seems very clunky.....why is there no lock on like in Dark Souls? What advantage is there to not having a lock on? In my opinion it makes the game worse. I didn't have a lot of fun my in my first battle.

Also a first timer, but I want to make sure you understand that beyond recent wrong the camera with L you can tap the touch screen on the 3DS so that when you press L it centers you towards the monster. Makes a big difference.

There's worse things than camping zone lines. At least now Plesioth can't choose to die in unreachable water as a final 'fuck you'

And I don't think anything like that ever happened to me in Tri. It looks like you can carve him but you can't. Two rounds of fighting for no carves, urgh.

It can happen in Tri/3U, but it's not as easy as it is in the older games. In the older games, monsters wouldn't be shy about sitting in the lava and firing crap at you (Gravios, Rajang, look at you two here). Now, with the exception of Alatreon, monsters won't do that. Agnaktor only goes into the lava when it's escaping. Uragaan might roll into it, but come back on land.

A lot of weapons with vertical range can be used to hit tough to reach places. There's also the chance to hit those tough spots when a monster falls over, is in a trap, etc. In the actual game, there are benefits.. like specific loot rewards.. for breaking specific parts of a monster. ie; only way to obtain a Horn for crafting is to break their horn during the hunt.

So, tried out Dual Swords again, this time against the sledding rabbit. I wanted to see how quickly I could finish it with an aggressive style.

Started off with a shock trap and two large bombs to the face, followed by constant wailing until he shook off the trap and then become paralyzed shortly after. Entered demon mode and started more wailing, so by the time he entered the second area he was begging for death.

That was pretty sweet.

Upper thrust with the spear, home run swing w/ hammer, overhead swing w/ greatsword, etc. Diversity in weapons means some are more adept at dealing damage to certain body parts than others, and that they allow you to adopt various play styles. Don't forget that you can also do things like concentrating your attacks on a leg to topple a monster, or blunt attacks on the head to knock them down. More often than not they'll be down for a while with their most vulnerable body part wide open.

For most monsters, the head is the weakest spot, and typically the most risky to hit.

indeed, but it just so happens that the second monster in this demo is one of the exceptions. Plesioth's belly is his weak point and his head takes much less damage. Unless they changed it for this version of course...can't wait for some detailed information to come out, unless it's up somewhere I don't know about.

I'm surprised people consider clunky RE6 and not this. Holy shit this game is bad.

I played 4 classes (the classes/weapons people says are good for beginners), read the faq,etc.. and the conclussion I reach every time is that the problem is not that the game requires time and patience...

Is just a bad game. Clunky controls, bad camera, tedious battle system with not even soft lock or something (I'm ok with no hard lock, but at least some kind of soft lock when you are close enough?), no cancels (?) and basically tedious enemies with the 3 same attack patterns while you struggle to constantly reach them and deal thousand blows for 10 minutes until the die.

I'm ok with no hand holding, but unlike Demon Souls or Dark Souls that offer perfect controls and intense and short battles MH just came at a game that the satisfaction after defeating an enemy is because you managed to sleash him like 1000 times for 20 min without falling sleep.

Millions of people enjoy bad games. I'm not ashamed to admit that I like a bad game.

After hearing so much about MH I definetly was expecting a somewhat good game, but ugh... I don't know, I might give it another go, but if it smells like shit and tastes like shit is probably shit.

Just because you don't like or understand something, doesn't make it shit. The *demo* is shit for new players, though.

I'll agree on the bad camera if you were playing on the 3DS but disagree with everything else.

Monster Hunter and the Souls games both share the same "how much damage can I safely get away with before being punished hard" idea. Cancels let you get out of everything safely and that's not very fun. Souls has a larger emphasis on short skirmishes with multiple enemies, while MonHun focuses on short skirmishes with a single enemy and followed by a break in combat when you've done enough damage. How are you struggling to walk 1 or 2 maps over to get to the monster?

Also if you're slashing something 1000 times and it's not dead yet, your weapon might be broken/dull.

The TOUCH CONTROLS are amazing, letting you have full access to inventory. What a God send !!!
Makes it super easy for anyone to play and use items especially for beginners.

Not for you? Sure. Bad game? No way.

There's not enough time to kill that stupid water dragon thing. It's also annoying how the monsters just LOVE to stay at the exit of each section, so you accidentally move sections a lot of times.

You can move further into the section and draw it toward you. Make sure your 'helpers' are following and not holding the monster back. Tap the call icons on the touch screen to bring them to you. Nothing worse than trying to fight a monster near an exit.

I'm mainly a DS and Great Sword user. Actually, other than trying out a hunting horn in Unite and bowguns in Tri, that's all I've ever used.

I went into the fight with Plessy and I found it wasn't so difficult. I beat him with both the DS (couldn't they make male and female avatars?) and GS so I was feeling good.

Then I went in with the bow. Dear lord this thing is confusing to use. I was having trouble getting around even normal monsters and hitting them. So much stress combined with manhandling the camera...it was crazy. Then I went into the water, and it was awesome. The bow handled Plessy like a beauty and I was just keeping range, dodging and then smiling away.

But then it went out on land and I got immediately annihilated. I had less than 5 minutes left on the clock (my fault, I was looking for the run button and only just then realized it was mapped to the right back button). Is it possible to beat it with a bow? Really cool experience, but I was just wondering if anyone here has.

Yeah, this is the only aspect of this game I hate. The world navigation feels really shoddy. Couldn't they have made it more obvious where the loading screen is?

MH4 supposedly has a somewhat open world doesn't it?

I'm in the same boat. My go to weapons, Hammer and Switch Axe, I was able to beat Ples easily. But Bow, as much as I enjoy using it in the demo, just doesn't dish out enough damage for me yet. I'm going to keep trying to down it with the bow by the time the game releases. That shall be my goal.

I remember paying the MH Tri demo back on the Wii. The combat felt complex and sluggish and it didn't help at all that the Wii controls were counterintutiive . After buying the game and getting a Classic Controller Pro, the controls immediately made a lot more sense, but it still took a while to learn the combat system ,especially in terms of learning how to dodge properly since it has to be exact timing. Although, its' extremely easier to do this if you've got a skill attached to your armor called Evasion+ 1 or even better, Evasion+2. These skills make it so you have a slightly longer window of opportunity to be invulnerable during the character animation for dodging. Those skils are especially useful when fighting against monsters such as Deviljho, Diablos, Barroth, and Agnakator.

The game won't take as long as to kill with 4 player online

Finally played the demo on WiiU. Waaaaaaay more enjoyable than the 3DS demo.
Though I have to say, and I hate to use the word lazy, but this seems like an incredibly lazy port. The text is small, the gamepad screen is 4:3 and hardly utilized (no minimap on the gamepad but the 3DS has one!?), the second control stick is basically a d-pad (though it's position is much more comfortable), and framerate that's no better than the 3DS version.

Don't completely disagree with this post. Find it really bizarre that you complain about tedious battle system and clunky controls and no cancels, then compare it to the Souls games which very intentionally share the same feature.

The camera is very bad, I don't understand why I don't just have free control of it. I'm not sure what a soft lock is but there is what I've been calling a "pseudo-lock on".

"struggle to constantly reach them"
Yes, this is a huge issue I have with the series, and having the Demo constrain you to 20 min battles alone only amplifies that. This becomes a lot less of an issue when you've got 4 people positioned around the monster so someone's always ready to hit it.

It's not that great a bow for plessie aside from the pierce effect you get on the first charge, so if you're not getting killed by plessie, you're probably doing fine. The second charge and the barrage are better for inducing status effects, but the barrage leaves you wide open and is a slow attack.

My guess is that the best strategy is to bring out the big guns early. Hit plessie with the trap and bombs first, or sleep bomb if you prefer to take the chance that your companions will totally screw up the sleep part of sleep bombing. If you mess that part up, abandon, and start over.

Just did the Lagombi fight on MHP3 and MH3U demo back to back.

3DS screen feels a little too cramped (especially when your partners take up a bit of space going GARHAHGAHHDASZRZKRK) but the graphics sure look great.

Lock-on is very helpful and I no longer need to wrestle with the touch screen camera controls.

My hands feel a little cramped playing on the OG 3DS. Does playing on a XL help because I might need to upgrade if it does.

Are there more attacks in the game? I finally beat the easy boss with the sword and shield, but just hacking away with the same single attack.

Sword and Shield has a bunch of attacks with certain attacks able to chain into other attacks and chains. Although, I much prefer SnS with status effects and I don't think the one in the demo has any?

Yep if I was you upgrade. Its my sole reason for upgrading yea big screen is nice but comfortability is worth it than anything else.

with double swords I managed to beat the Rabiit really fast... this game is great. The animation of the character attacking reminds me of Dark Souls.

Long sword seems to be the weapon of choice against Pleisoth but the controls underwater are as bad as they say.

Well at least you gave it a chance!

This demo sucks if you are beginner, keep that in mind. Lagombi may be easy but he moves around a lot.

If you get the chance to buy it for cheap, rent, or whatever, do it. You like DS so if you keep trying MH you gonna love it too, there are many fans out there, so it's definitely not a "bad game". You just need to learn how to play.

im downloading the demo right now, the only MH game I played was on the PS Vita ( PSP game ), and I never really got into it ( about 3 hours play time, most of it is me dying ). So I'm really curious if the Wii U version is gonna make me enjoy it a lot more.
