Tomb Raider Review Thread!

oh the frustation of the haters is so yummy!
Time to find that sentence saying bad things about the game through each review and pray for a bad review.

Really?

No one is praying for a bad review. I'm happy it's doing awesomely, just in picking apart reviews/passages, we can attempt to analyze some of the major concerns that still seem valid.

This sentiment is so strange.

seems people are still finding ways to dislike the game despite the good reviews (omg bribez). Why does GAF hate triple A releases nowadays?

I've barely been following Tomb Raider but if I had to guess, some of the hate is from the atrocious pre release marketing the game has had.

@Jim Sterling.

I watched the Gametrailers review. Two things that really stood out to me.

- The multiplayer looked to be a different game engine. It does not look like the same game. You call it "quite decent" in your piece. Is there really that much of a difference between the MP and the SP graphically..? how does it compare to Uncharted Mp..?

- The setpieces.. oh my that looked so "wrong" in the GT review. Plane crashing and the lot. Looked to much like Nathans stupid "I barely survived" set pieces..I just want to know how much they play a role in the game..? are they there all the time ..? or just something that happens 3 -4 times during the wjole game.?
Multiplayer: I could be wrong, but I wouldn't say the difference is dramatic enough to suggest a different engine. That said, it's clearly a different sort of game, with a rewired control scheme and whatnot. Multiplayer is a bit rough and ready, but better than it has any right to be. I had fun with it, and felt the campaign was content-sufficient to not feel it exists at the main event's expense.

Setpieces: They typically cap off a major chapter. Significant events in the story are usually followed by some climactic escape or slalom down a rocky ravine or river. Personally, I found them a tremendous highlight of the experience, but if you're not into such large-scale sequences, you might find there's too much of it.

It's a shame they got rid of the platforming and replaced it with automated crap. Heh oh well , I guess the series is about the story these days.

Sounds like it's very well executed for what it is.

A close analog might be Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, which has extremely refined production and is extremely well loved. But many people (including me) hate it for being a box-ticking, paint-by-numbers experience.

When I played AC:B, I shouldn't have expected an apple to be an orange. Can't expect TR to review bad just because it caters to an audience that does not include you. I also don't expect a Project Diva game or w/e to review with 6s because I don't care about J-pop.

Is this supposed to be a looker on PC? If it's anything like Sleeping Dogs on PC, I'm in.
Yes, here is the list of enhancements exclusive to the PC :
High-end Graphics

Very high resolution textures with up to 16x the amount of data
Detail Tessellation to enhance the detail on many surfaces in the game
Higher quality shadows
High quality bokeh depth of field with near-blur
Tessellation algorithms used to smooth out geometry
Improved cloth, SSAO, quality wetness effects, and post-filter effects.
LOD quality is adjustable for better quality on higher-end machines.

thanks for answering..!

Reading some of these reviews and then looking at their scores continues to show how lop sided the scoring system it, but the scores are coming out how I expected, regardless of problems etc. that it would end up being around 8ish.

And also, jeez at some of those killing animations, holding a guy down and shot gunning him in the back of the head. We make fun of Uncharted for killing like a ton of people, but Drake has never brutally killed anyone the way Lara does so off hand; of all the things I expected from the game and the mockery behind her development and then going on to kill a bajillion bad guys, I didn't expect her some of these animations.
It isn't so much the violence as it is the character doing it, old Lara killed a lot of people, but not like this, lol.

Still, I am in no rush to pick this up sadly after reading the reviews, especially when you throw up half the achievements/trophies on some shitty MP mode that no one wanted, but I've stuck it on a list of things that friends/family can get me for my birthday if they want.

Should post some more gifs.
Don't encourage him.

The dissonance felt from Drake being a mass murderer is because he is portrayed by the game to be the happy-go-lucky, wise-cracking, and likable "every man".

The same parallels (seemingly, I haven't played the game yet) cannot be drawn to Tomb Raider. I don't see it.

So how open is this compared to Uncharted? That series is unplayable to me with all the QTEs and closeed nature of it.

Hub areas as you progress that let you fast travel to collect or explore more! More open then Uncharted by far. The sense of exploration is great and if you don't use your hunter sense, it will take you longer to find stuff.

Wow so that's 2 games that came out in less than 3 months of this year so far that game informer said is one of the greatest games ever (dead space 3).

GI is such a joke :lol They've transcended just giving every AAA game a 8.5 or higher. Now each one is the greatest game ever.

Woop.

I was mildly interested in this but cautious with optimism. Not the reviews I expected. An 8 by Edge ? Colour me surprised. Well done.

Ah, so you're angry today, huh?

Play the game. I have. Posted impressions earlier. The game is without a doubt one of the best looking games on consoles (and I have little to go on to worry that the PC version will not look especially nice).

1. I'm quite happy right now playing Tomb Raider Anniversary :).

2. Read my post, there are better looking games this generation. I didn't say this wasn't a good looking game. I've played the game as well at PAX and Comic-Con. So don't play the I've played the game and you haven't card.

Blahblahblahblah cherry-picked quotes...

The game is being rewarded with too many high scores, and the content of each review just doesn't add up to the final score. S-E must have spent a shitload on bribes.

Are you seriously incapable of understanding the idea of a "big picture"? I don't know how people saying things like this ended up this way... we all know that when Ebert scores a movie 4/4 (happens all the time), it's not perfect. When somebody gives a movie a "thumbs up" (happens all the time), their highest score, it's not perfect.

A game review is no different than any other medium. It's intended to help you understand whether you would like a product by describing and criticizing it. It's not "1 negative remark = 1 point off". Nothing is perfect, there will always be flaws, but there is range between slight missteps and life-threatening issues. Somehow this subtlety has been lost and there's only "amazing" and "shit".

It's like clockwork and it's one aspect of "gaming" that is really holding back the medium.

I'm surprised reviews were allowed to come out this early and after reading the eurogamer review I think I'll pick it up as a late bday present for myself.

Rev3 said it is 12-15 hours. Not bad.

This with decent gameplay is making me think of picking it up. In fact am pretty sure I will!

Hopefully it does well and the next game can just start Lara as Lara than the unlikable character the writers started to create. Glad the rest of the production ignored ot even if it makes the first 2 hours jarring.

Oh don't sorry, Tricky I Shadow is smart enough to look at the score and jump in joy.

Glad to see it's turned out to be a great game.
Sad to see that some of the more 'tomb raider-y' bits have been shaken out.

I'm sure I'll enjoy it regardless.

2013 is a great gaming year so far!

So were all those threads and arguments worth it for you at this point?

I mean, how vindicated do you feel right now? :P

Poor guy is going to feel so empty and lost in two weeks. He's going to have a 48-hour orgasm next week when he blows through the game twice in a weekend binge, concurrently with an extra thousand posts in the OT over the next week, and then... it's all over. :(

Monochrome loads about 6 times faster.

Compressed-to-hell-and-back jpegs also load faster, but you don't see any professional website design use them.

You should have scrapped the ugly monochromatic gifs if loading was the argument for including them.

Nirolak, I think the claim is motivated by what we also "discussed" earlier in the Dead Space 3 review thread, cf. Stump's post:

Yeah but I feel the bands here are starting to get distinct.

We still see titles in the 90's, so there's a larger portion of the scale being used here overall and just making a relatively safe sequel like Dead Space 3 or Crysis 3 really isn't cutting it anymore.

For example, what do you feel made DmC and Tomb Raider resonate with journalists that didn't work for Crysis 3, Dead Space 3, or Rising?

My God.I'm halfway through the Eurogamer interview and it reads as if it's being written by a 14 year old who thinks he's too funny for his own good.Jesus...
