Sony to push for 16 million PS4 shipments in 2013

For Sony's sake I hope they launch in Europe this year.

If BF4 and the new COD are only available on the new Xbox in 2013, a lot of people I know will be locked in to that console for the whole gen.

Not to mention GTA V; which has the highest likelihood of being exclusive.

Highly doubt it'll be anything insane like that, but I'm hopeful for a healthy supply. The easier to obtain at launch, the better.

Clearly someone has misunderstood something. Looking at the shipment numbers for the PS3, it would take them a good 2 years to sell 16 million consoles.

1 : The greed is so thick in the air you can smell it.
2 : Scalpers : remember to cut along the river
3 : gaf latching on to 599 number to have something to shit on.

Still think it's a typo.
1.6 million would be a reasonable, if still somewhat ambitious, goal.

This can honestly be Sony's best console launch ever, if the price is right and they have a great launch library.

The PS2 was their best chance coming off the enormous worldwide success of the PS1.

15.6 million worldwide (shipped) for PS3 + PS2.

But obviously demand for the PS3 is waning.

Cheers.

I'm guessing it's ~10m PS3s and ~6m PS4s.

Maybe. Nintendo are (now) expecting to sell 4M WiiUs in a similar time-frame and that's being considered a failure sales-wise, so surely Sony are targeting around that (for a more expensive console) by end of March 2014. 6M by March seems a little high though.

I'm beginning to get more hopeful about a worldwide release - I'd forgotten they had one planned with the PS3 and then had to call it off. After that, there's no way they're going to call another one until they are sure they can do it. That doesn't explain why Vita didn't have one, although it didn't have direct competition at launch so that may be why they didn't feel the same pressure then as they surely will this year against Xbox3.

the comments are coming from component manufacturers, so are more likely to be specific to PS4.

they might simply be reporting that the supply chain has been told to ramp up to annualised 16m units by the end of fiscal 2013 - so basically preparing for 16m units per year for 2H14 onwards. That seems more reasonable and actually has no bearing on launch volumes at all, so I'll go back to being pessimistic on a Euro launch this year :/

That sounds reasonable.

Ok sony now I don't want to hear more excuse for 2013 ps4 launch in pal land... if it's just for usa+jap you will be damned.

It's got to be 16m units shipped in the first 12 months of production?

Mass shipments starting in August, would give them roughly 4m units by November, and over 5m in December, enough for a WW launch?

The company is just trying to evaluate the cost of manufacturing PS4 by requesting a quotation like if we order components with that amount in a year, how much will it be? They can also tell if the factories of those manufacturers are capable of providing those amount of units by this action...

Sony shouldn't even think about 599.

16Million for 2013 ONLY seem higly unlikely. It is either a false report or Sony is extreme optimistic about everything like games,launch,price,post-launch games etc.

There's absolutely no chance in hell of that being possible. The CPU and GPU will be on a 32nm or 28nm process and the GDDR5 will be 4Gbit chips, which is a new process. There's going to be an absolute shitload of wasted silicon. Not going to happen.

They haven't finalized the case, and console production isn't trivial. I would be surprised if anyone can make 2 million consoles a month at the start of a new console.

There has to be more to this system that we don't know for this to even be a legitimate number. It's gotta be something more than just hope or confidence.
