Sony to push for 16 million PS4 shipments in 2013

Hmm I wonder what game they have in development that would lead them to believe they could even come close to that amount in 2013, or if they have a REALLY low price point for the PS4. 299? I'd bite.

GDDR5 aside - and it may be that the reason we're getting 8GB instead of 4GB is because there's a glut of the stuff -

its brand new. Sony are able to switch to 8GB because they can buy chips with twice as much ram per chip than before. So the same number of chips, same motherboard etc, gets them twice as much ram.

Sure. I was referring to the thought some had about a deflated PC market meaning GDDR5 manufacturers might have capacity they didn't expect to be able to make most use of, if that makes sense. Not a glut exactly though, I'll grant you. ;)

With the WiiU not doing so well, wedefinitely could have another crash coming,

ah, maybe. GPU sales are pretty depressed this year, although standard ram on them is likely to start increasing.

I'm sure any manufacturer will cut a decent deal for someone wanting 250m chips a year :) (16m consoles per year @16 chips per console)

Yes I am sure Sony is going to ship out almost as many PS4s during the launch window as there were Gamecubes/Xboxes sold lifetime.

Maybe a typo for 1.6?

It is 16 million in the original article.

I don't know Chinese and sadly it seems the article is behind a pay wall, but from the little available, with Google translate, it seems that the English version posted is not a great translation.

EDIT:

I think I found a copy of the article: http://www.dram.com.cn/home/newsintron.asp?id=84668

If anyone knows Chinese and can translate, thanks!

They won't hit even close to half of that if it's coming in at $399 or more. They must really be targeting some aggressive pricing.

If Nintendo can aim to sell 5.5M WiiUs in four months, I don't see why Sony can't aim to sell (ship) 16M in 12 months, which is what I take this to mean. 5.5Mx3=16.5M.

Uh... they better have one hell of a launch game to announce at E3, cuz... this ain't happening without it... and a September launch. And we better be talking fiscal year.

Then? Maybe.

I just hope they can have 1.5 million for NA this holiday season. Then I won't have to worry about my pre-order getting taken by an employee to scalp.

For how far away the launch is, they are pretty aggressive with the online marketing so far. So while I don't see them shipping 16 million systems, I do see them being very aggressive with their early shipments. These numbers leads me to believe they'll do a WW launch and at a good price. Wonder how much they plan to lose on each unit.

Why do companies say these things when they must know it isn't going to happen?

By "say these things" you mean "are rumoured to have said these things internally by anonymous third party component makers".

Come on guys, it's not like this is from an E3 keynote or anything.

If that means I can walk into a store on launch day in the middle of the afternoon and nonchalantly pick one up off of a shelf then I'm all for it.

But they say:

So assembly takes no time at all?
This would be pretty awesome. Only console launches I've been there day one were for the Dreamcast and when I got a Gamecube for my nephew and both times were kind of crazy.

But when I picked up a 360 then a PS3 both times I walked in about March of the following year they released and calmly walked over and grabbed one. No tons of people fighting for a console.

This go-round I'm anticipating pre-ordering the PS4 from Amazon.

Where did Sony say this?

You people are putting way too much credence into an obviously incorrect report from a sketchy source.

Digitimes doesn't have a good track record for PS4. Didn't they claim Sony was making 20 million PS4s for 2012?

Digitimes doesn't have a god track record, period.

Fiscal year 2013 won't be 12 months long by the time it releases.

I don't think it's referring to 2013 (unless you want to start throwing in PS3 sales), I think it's referring to fiscal 2014, ie. they'll be up to a production rate of 16M consoles per year, or thereabouts, by the end of fiscal 2013.

I'm not saying I'm right, just trying to make sense of this nonsense. ;)

Thread title change seems in order, just to emphasize that this is only a rumor and not actually from a confirmed Sony source.

I am sure they will be able to make more than PS3 as PS4 will only have one single SoC, but 16m? That is simply not possible.

i have my doubts they will be even able to MAKE 16 million by end of FY2013.

Shipping 16 million would need to be $299, vita free, worldwide launch in september... and even THEN its a longshot

Aahaha if that was possible there wouldn't be even doubts about the european launch this year.
Maybe 16m PS3+PS4 is possible ( 10m PS3 with a 50$ price cut + 6m PS4 if they really can impress people and the price is right).

I guess this all depends. What else will the PS4 do that we don't know about? For example, will it have cable box/PVR functions like the next Xbox is rumoured to have? I know Sony has DVR functionality with their Nasne device in Japan, so maybe they could be planning to port this tech into the PS4? I imagine things like that will drive up the mainstream appeal and if it's also got cable box functionality, there'll be a lot more sales than just to gamers.

That's just random guesswork though, but I suppose my point is we've only gotten a limited glimpse of what the PS4 can do so far, so maybe they do have some super duper killer feature that they're banking on pushing a ton of units... or maybe this is an untrue rumor... or it could just be a gross overestimation on Sonys part of this rumor is true... who knows :)

My guess is they are talking about the fiscal year 2013, which is until end of March 2014. So..... 16 million in 5-6 months? I don't know.....

Yeah, this thread has to be the biggest example of that people don't actually read the OP or the linked article. So much misunderstanding in here. And people should listen to gofreak here as well.
