Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

As a developer there is not a better CDN in the world than akamai.

And as an end-user I'm telling you that this is simply not true (at least for the service level CBSi are at, there probably are different price tiers?): Just because you now are able to download swiftly doesn't make the same true for everyone.

Downloads speeds from GiantBomb and GameSpot have consistently been extremely bad for me, I used to get fantastic download rates before GiantBomb switched their CDN. Plenty of other people have also complained the last few months, I can't be the only one.

Those of you with playback problems, have you tried using Chrome + HTML5 playback? Not an ideal solution to have a browser just for a single site, but it could potentially eliminate any flash/browser issues.

The data rate delivered by their server is the problem for me, not a slow computer: It doesn't make a difference whether I use their flash player, HTML5 or just go to Download -> HD and watch it like that.

It's lagging just the same when I try to stream their videos on my Nexus 10, either in Chrome for Android or MX Player Pro.

Personally using Chrome as my designated GiantBomb browser has pretty much fixed all my problems. High quality, non-stop streaming, scrubbing, click to pause/unpause and I have a shitty connection compared to other Gaffers.

Ahh, that definitely sounds like the exact same issue I was having when the videos were on AWS. Whatever routing my ISP used to the Amazon data center was trash.

Back then, if I remember right, WM didn't mirror their content because of cost. Curious to known if that's the same with CBSi and Akamai (because if they're serious about long-form, high bitrate video, they need at least a couple worldwide mirrors).

I have the same issue. Download speeds are okay at first, but then really slow down. One of their engineers said they are working on it.

Hey guys

Just an update that we're working with Akamai on these issues. Some of them are related to us getting more of their servers internationally. The other is our long form content is larger then they expected and so they're going thru their configurations to help us on both the streaming and progressive sides.

I was thinking 'sweet they are still doing TNT and friday show this week despite the pax', I only just noticed the dates are in April.

so 1 month of no content just for stupid pax and GD-con >:(

I use Chrome and I still have problems. I am patient though, so it doesn't effect me that much.

Being unable to reliably stream their videos in HD and requiring multiple hours to download them is a pretty serious issue, we are paying to experience their video content, after all.

Thanks for referencing this, it's good to hear that they are aware of the problems and are working on getting more Akamai capacity!

Just read Jeff's stand in article for Alex. Man seams like he's caught the VGCW bug. Weren't the Bomb Squad going to be set to feature some time?

This has probably been discussed before, but why does loading up GiantBomb freeze my computer for up to ten seconds every other time I visit the website? It's not just the browser, for that time, I can't do anything other than moving the mouse cursor. I'm running Chrome, Windows 7, i5-3570. This started when they switched to the new design.

I get this as well, I think it's something to do with Chrome but not sure what. It does the same thing on what I'd consider 'modern' websites that have been designed recently like Verge.

Videos have been loading very slow on the new site for me too, often it stops loading altogether.

Same.

Worst is on my iPod Touch 4, where I used to watch a Giantbomb video or two in bed before falling asleep. With the new site, I had to resort to using an RSS reader to grab the video feed as the main pages of the site eat up more memory than the poor little Touch has and it crashes.

And the past week or so even that's futile as the videos constantly stop loading or load slower than playback. I've given up and basically have watched no video content since they updated the site.

Thats a strange excuse really, making it sound like its one or the other.

That being said it makes sense to not have one this week. They already explained there will be no wed/thu/fri show due to pax. So besides the couple quick looks we get in the first couple days there's no time for anything else.

The Ken Levine interview was great. As someone who has avoided as much of the Bioshock Infinite marketing and advertising as possible, I really appreciate that the interview was purely about Levine's philosophies for game creation and not specifically about Infinite's story.

Anyone who is on a media blackout for the game shouldn't be worried and should check out the video.

Me! How early do you guys recommend getting in line? Is an hour early sufficient?

Number47, a fellow NYC Gaffer said to add an hour to each panel's wait time. I'd assume this one would be an hour and a half due to the site's popularity. Maybe we can meetup together before the panel.
