Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

Okay, real talk. I dropped Tested when it stopped being about a personality-driven tech site. Norm's superiority schtick also pushed me the wrong way too. That time when they were moving offices when Gary was not there calling out Will and Norm's bs really turned me off the site.

Still though, I wish everyone was still together because Norm had the charisma that ComicVine sorely needs.

The whole personality hate thing is kinda creepy.

Yes, Alex is kinda annoying at times, but I guess he's just nervous. Some people just aren't suited to be on video or podcasts. And you know what? That's fine. I think Alex writes a lot of good stuff, and that's where he needs to be. He seems like a smart guy, but perhaps not the right choice for the usual Bombcast vibe. Not everyone can be a Shaun Elliott or a Vinny Cravella. Some people are just fun to listen to no matter what they're talking about. Some people aren't.

Norm is awesome, I hate you people.

I like listening to Norm talk with Will and Gary on This is Only a Test, but I know that if I had to spend any extended period of time with him I would hate him. I've known plenty of people like him and it really is awful talking to them for any length of time.

After all the interviews Patrick put out last week I don't see how you could dislike him. They're great.

The concept is great but plenty have critiqued him on his interview style being amateurish, especially how he essentially answers the questions while he's asking the question.

Wow! I must say “Wow!” to the continued ignorance about what happened to Patrick when he “broke his collarbone” on that “pothole”. This story goes so deep that even the mole people don’t know the complete situation. There are dinosaur remains with less knowledge! Heck, the Pope RESIGNED over Patrick’s Pothole Adventure!

Now, what I am about to reveal to the world (or to you punks here on NeyoGarf) is possibly life-changing, but definitely Earth-shattering. Wait, maybe I should flip-flop those… too late to go back now! My backspace key is telling me to press on, despite the danger involved. It’s got a cursed gift-for-gab (gaben?) that can’t be sated.

Are you ready? ARE… YOU… READY?!? Sorry, some UFC intro is playing on the TV. It always yells that at the viewers, and I’m always like, “Yes, just stop yelling at me, UFC!” It doesn’t listen.

What happened to Patrick “Bone-Canary” Klepek on that crisp, fateful night began mostly as he described it. Yes, he was riding his bike home that night. Was he possibly a bit more crunked than what he led on? Well, I’m no bike expert, but riding your bike with the handlebars and front wheel backwards may betray some crunkeditude. It’s all I’m sayin’…

Everything felt electric that night. Patrick’s hair was bushier than usual, his questionable beer-quality buzz felt magical… the world was giving Patrick a high-five, and he was obliging. As he held up his hand to give the ozone one up-high, a “pothole” appeared into existence. Yes, it just blooped into existence! But it was no ordinary pothole, at all. AT ALL! It was a portal to ANOTHER DIMENSION.

Before Patrick could finish his world-encompassing high-five, he was already going head first into the portal, with his front wheel/handlebars still facing the wrong way. With a flash of neon rainbow that PBS would be jealous of, Patrick landed on an orange, grassy field in the dimension of Zamzorozozozooooo! It’s a very beautiful name if you can pronounce it correctly.

Now hold your horses, right there! Falling out of the green sky of Zamzorozozozooooo isn’t what broke Patrick’s collarbone. The weirdo, orange field had the consistency of Jell-O. He bounced on that field like a BMX stuntman! It was amazing. You had to be there…

Confused and lost, Patrick biked along this seemingly endless field. The orange, gelatinous grass screamed as he rode along it—it was sentient life, after all—but Patrick just assumed that he was hearing giggling off in the distance. After what seemed like miles (it was 500 yards), he finally came across some “people”. The Zamzorozozozooooo locals looked mostly like normal people, but they came off as northern Italian. Other than the leatherette clothing and talking at a volume only found in community theater, Patrick was pretty sure that Zamzorozozozoooooians were just displaced northern Italians. Maybe stumbled upon a portal to a 1980’s Italian fantasy epic.

Long story shorter: Patrick was stuck in the Zamzorozozozooooo dimension for EIGHT MONTHS, but due to the vagaries of inter-dimensional timekeeping, it felt like mere SECONDS in our dimension. He fought many battles for the Zamzorozozozoooooians against the dastardly Pfflinginot Raiders. They looked like northern Italians, as well, but wore helmets shaped like angry, plastic, Chinese-manufactured dragons. It was epic, man!

Eventually, the old wizard, whom aided Patrick in his many battles, found a way to open the dimensional pothole portal, and send him back to Earth on his two-wheeled war chariot. As he flew up through the portal, reality bending into a kaleidoscope of colors, Patrick misaimed his speedy ascent and wracked his shoulder on the bottom of the portal. He cartwheeled out of the pothole end of the portal, bike and all, crashing back to reality shoulder-first. After surviving many bloody, soul-crushing battles, Patrick was felled by the freedom he so craved.

As for the “beard”… as we see it now, it has been growing for nine months. It is a three-quarter year beard that Patrick “Beardly McBeard” Klepek claims is just a few weeks of little effort.

BUT, I have another theory! Who said that the Zamzorozozozoooooians and the Pfflinginot Raiders were the only species in that dimension? WHAT IF there was a THIRD RACE called the Spottly Beardeardrians… and one of them hitchhiked on Patrick’s face into our dimension?? Is it just an innocent trip of exploration, or is it a mission to conquer Earth???

You be the judge.

I feel bad for Alex but Brad is nervous too and he does what most normal people do when they're nervous, he clams up and doesn't speak. Alex just tries way way too hard. People like your writing dude, sure you act arrogant but that's your schtick. His laugh seriously sounds like he was filling in for Tidus in Final Fantasy X's laughing scene.

I agree with all the people who say the Harmonix people are overexposed on GiantBomb, and I'm sick of them showing up all the time. Same with Brad Muir quite frankly. A little of any of the "extended family" goes a long way.

That said, they say all the time that they know what videos we're watching based on statistics they have access to. People must be giving these appearances clicks, or they'd stop showing up so much.

There is no need to be polite about it mate. The GB community is the worst I have experienced in a long time.

It has been mentioned here before, but it appears that the GB community is built upon the foundation of a young core. A young core who are rude, childish and quite frankly obsessed with the team members. Immature sycophants so to speak. Of course there will be good members. I'm not saying there isn't, but they have become lost among the white noise.

While all gaming sites have arsehats I think it is a shame that the guys have got this level of immaturity in their community. They deserve better. I wouldn't even think of posting let alone read the comment section, yet I quite happily do so here, on Eurogamer, and Dtoid. And the chat during a TNT or Live show? Fuck that.

I think what also contributes to this is that GiantBomb has a subscription service. People feel entitled because they give the site $5 a month. They feel some type of ownership so they bitch and moan constantly because they feel slighted in some crazy way.

I agree with you, the good and decent members are getting lost in this noise. It really just makes me want to stay away from everything related to GiantBomb. Just like every other community these guys will whine and try to get on as many soap boxes as possible. Even in this thread there are constant idiots who will shit up the thread every time new content is out because a certain personality said something they twisted into something offensive. They'll bitch about everything, but they'll be the first people feverishly consuming every single piece of content. It's creepy really, and boderlines on obsession.

Yeah, the panels are starting to become a parody of themselves.

I think the last panel they did where I felt like I got something out of it was the panel at PAX Prime from - I think - two years ago, where for a short period they brought up Jeff green, Whitta, and Pachtor. That whole panel was great from what I remember.

The Q/A's are nearly pointless at the moment. Half of the time people just go up to the mic to bring up a joke or reference that was made on the Bombcast/TNT/Unprofessional Fridays weeks or even months prior in some vain attempt to get a laugh out of the guys or audience. They then shove in some half-assed question at the end to make it look like they actually came up there with a purpose. That question that girl from Canada asked at the very end was a great one, it's unfortunate that they all couldn't be like that. When the crew want to dish out some honest and genuine commentary about the industry or journalism, we know they can. So it's a bit sad when most of their time during the Q/A's is spent dealing with people trying to be funny.

That said, it doesn't help that the guys often start commenting on the question (or joking about it) before the person has even finished asking it; Alex did this a lot.

Yes, and the ones where if they feel like there is not enough subscriber only content or if videos are a bit light for a week because everyone is busy and then start screaming about how they have been ripped off or duped. Its 5 bucks a month, thats the cost of lunch for a day, or you can pay 50 dollars for an entire year and even during light periods there are more hours of content posted than you could get for the price of many games at launch. Some people just love to complain on the internet

I thought it was fine, I mean the show seemed pretty light on games, and I wouldn't really want to sit in a theater for 2 hours to hear them talk about Duck Tales. They're funny dudes, doesn't really bother me that they put on more of a show than a discussion for these live things. We hear their opinions on stuff every week.

Q&A's are always cringe worthy, for sure. Ironically, though, it's when they spit the most game about the industry during the entire panel. Jeff answers them really well.

The amount of over analysis / hate about Patrick in this thread is absurd. He is a decent writer, adds content to the site, and contributes just as much as anyone else on the team.
The interview dumptruck is a great idea, the interviews are good [esp. for being raw recordings], and I am fairly sure Patrick gave a decent disclaimer about them in the first one.
for fucks sake we get it you don't like "the new guy".

I don't know how I feel about it (it's neither good nor bad... just different), but I definitely get the sense that they're getting further away from analysis/criticism source and closer to satire/mst3k kind of thing... if that makes sense.

Again, I don't think it's really bad... just changing. But, maybe it's just because gaming is, as an industry, becoming a parody of itself anyway. Anyone up for some Shoot Bang Explosion 10: Death Blood Revenge?

with all the lack of content i'm feeling like watching some of their nes/snes videos, but its kind of hard to find them

is there a list of them anywhere? including Ryans recent shipment of famicom games

Shrug I ain't fuckin complainin. Obviously what these dudes do isn't rocket science. If I was paying them for content maybe I'd have something to bitch about but for now all I can do is comment randomly on a forum about what I think every now and again. People who put out creative work open themselves to commentary.

So this guy with buttons just came up to the mic in the PAX part 2 video and I immediately paused when he opened his mouth... should I even bother with the rest of this video?

there are at least 2 good questions in there one is the very last person. imho no, part 2 is a waste of time.

All right thanks. Apparently there was an endurance run question, what response did he get?

I don't remember an ER question. They may have mentioned ERs in the leadup (like the guy talking about how he got mocked for asking about one last year), but no question was directly about one.

that la mulana dumptruck is why i value patrick. they're relatively low profile indie games being talked about, through a translator for a small part of the site. it would have been so easy just to not bother and instead chill with friends at gdc, but he clearly tried hard to make sure that the site had a good breadth of coverage and i found it quite interesting.
