Cute....

Maybe calling Halo 4 "bad" is wrong, but "derivative" and "mediocre" are more accurate. Especially the multiplayer in which I spend 95% of my time with. You can tell it was some corporate decision from Microsoft to take the "market leader" in FPSes (CoD) and copy its features to help boost sales of Halo. Loadouts, experience points, kill streaks, nerfing grenades/melee (or buffing weapons, not sure which), the speed of the game and ease of deaths, etc etc just turned it into a CoD clone in space. Very lame. I remember putting months and months of play into Halos 3 and Reach. But I quit this after maybe 2 weeks tops because the gameplay was just not fun.

I can't wait for Bungie's next game. Bungie is a company that makes games that also make money. 343 is a company that is designed to make money that also happens to produce games.

My opinion has changed over time but I still feel that Halo 4 is the worst of the bunch. 343 has taken the franchise in a direction I don't care for and they rarely listen to "fan" feedback. (Unless they consider the average joe they bring in for focus testing to be actual fans.) Josh Holmes and their team are doing a fantastic job of making Halo even more middling than its been since Reach. I'm honestly done supporting them and their products. Especially with people like Quinn railing against fans on Twitter instead of being an adult about the fact that core fans hate their changes and have valid critiques he refuses to acknowledge.

We never had that kind of foolishness when Bungie was running the show.

I missed the conference.

Can someone sum it up for me?

Was there anything about the future of Halo besides multiplayer? Any mention of side games, Halo 5 for instance?

It seems like bungie is doing all the right things, and 343 saying all the wrong things. But in bungie case it is working because it is a new ip.

343 can let go their creativity but dont call it halo 5. Make a 3rd person action odst style game on requim call it buck: just another day being awesome

Edit: Let me guess soon the press and studio will play the entitlement card.

I still can't believe there are some people who think Halo 3 was the best in the series.

1, 2 and 3 are all incredible games. Then it just comes down to how old you are, what your friends played, and what your ideal version of balance is.

4 is unanimously worse than all of them, by a long shot.

OK, I just got to the part of the presentation where he talks about all the story "buckets" that feed into the Halo 4 narrative and all I have to say is:

IT'S TOO GODDAMNED MUCH!

No wonder it was a narrative disaster!

Huh. So this is what Diablo II players feel like.

Hit the nail on the head.

When your favorite game is dumbed down and homogenized for the lowest common denominator it feels horrible.

I have moved onto PC shooters, but I know how the Halo fans feel at this point.

Saw that earlier in the thread. Is it joke?

Okay, I get more accessible.

What do they mean by the last two?

Second bullet = "+10 HEADCASE!!!!" "ORDNANCE READY". Make new, unskilled players feel good without having to accomplish anything. A la CoD.

I think the last bullet has something to do with trying to set the MP within the fiction, which was totally unnecessary and didn't work in the slightest.

Comparing this to Diablo 3 is a good comparison. Both games were made by different companies under a newer corporate structure:

D3 after the Activision-Blizzard merger and not made by Blizzard North
Halo 4 made by 343 which is owned 100% by Microsoft and created specifically to make Halo games

Ah, Halo 4. The most important game I played last year, because it saved me from even considering the next Xbox.

I totally forgot that the MP had any sort of fiction behind it. All that they did was add the name Infinity, its the stupidest claim they made pre release.

Anyway, I think people here are a little too harsh but then again 343 isnt really doing itself any favors.

Now, how about my BTB objective damn you!

Why wasn't the BR hitscan?
A non-random way of making it more difficult to hit targets at range. Basically, it's an alternative to Reach's bloom system. Halo 1 does it too, and it's awesome.

It's somewhat problematic in Halo 3 because they combine it with substantial spread and poor netcode and poor visual response, which makes everything quite opaque. A very "where are my bullets going and when?" feel, particularly when online conditions get bad.

Personally I love going with projectiles, but Halo 3 could have done a better job with it.

LOL, I didnt mean anything bad about it either. It was a simple question.

I would probably say

BF3, Counter-Strike, TF2, Planetside, Tribes, Day Z, Natural Selection 2.

Co-Op/Single Player

L4D, Stalker, Killing Floor (not going to mention any games more than 5 years old here cause then we would be here all night).

Now some of these games exist on console, but not really on the same level. BF3 for example, 12 on 12 battles, smaller maps, etc. Or TF2 has had about 350 updates on PC, the console versions have had only a few.

Thanks for the response, perfect answer.

I care less about MP. I enjoy Halo online and unskilled I am but don't want it dumbed down.

I just wanna know more about campaigns and the universe. The Bear revealed some amazing "WTF!" about the history and hopefully it's really tied in to future games.

Maybe I'm one of few who cares about SP. I dunno. {shrugicon}

Yeah, fuck hitscan.

Whatever, I thought the Halo 4 campaign was great minus the abundance of pressing switches. Multiplayer was fun too, even though certain aspects could have been more fleshed out, such as the use of tactical packages and support upgrades (why merely mimic the idea of perks? Try to improve upon the concept). Spartan Ops however.....yeah, that wasn't too great overall.

All good games that I also have on Steam but to me there hasn't been a truly great FPS in awhile. They all seem average at best these days.

I agree, even BF3 is fundamentally worse than BC2 in a lot of ways.

I have a feeling its because publishers are chasing after the COD sales, case in point Halo 3. Hopefully this fad of catering to a certain demographic ends soon.

Halo 3 was the best in the series.

Its very subjective, and easily arguable.

Halo 1 was excellent both in campaign and multiplayer.

Halo 2 and 3 were both great as well.

I think ODST deserves some mention, not as the best game in the series, but still an excellent game in its own right.

Halo 3 could have topped Halo 2 if the BR was hitscan, had better netcode and if there were some better maps.

And if the vehicles weren't so overpowered, grenade spam wasn't as prevalent, assault and other game modes weren't ruined, and I could go on...

Jesus, dude, there is NO WAY IN HELL any QTE can even be remotely considered a way to be more "connected" to the gameworld.

Anyone comparing Metacritic scores needs to do their research. Halo 4 suffered troll reviews which gave it a 2/10 and such, something the other games didn't suffer. Not fair at all to Halo 4 to compare Metacritic reviews, when it's just a victim of Metacritic accepting trash sites.

Bewilders me, too. That's what I mean, how did this happen? There's certain rules and expectations people have of a Halo game, certain philosophies to adhere to.

Weren't these people hired because they were eager to work with such philosophies?

Better question is: Wasn't a part of Bungie supposed to keep an eye on 343/MS since a part of the deal of their splitting from MS was giving MS the IP but at the same time Bungie had a say in what the series does?

If you piss off the fans or have some kind of crappy DRM policy than the reviews reflect those feelings.

Look at something like Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, or Skyrim.

Now look at games like Diablo 3, SimCity, and The Old Republic.

There is always a reason for games getting bombed on by user score, and it should always be noted, not just thrown away.

Haven't played Halo since 3 once I knew the direction Bungie was going for with Reach. I had hope 343 would correct it and it looks like they took it a step further.

I'm glad I stopped. They've been trying to make Halo more accessible since CE. It hasn't worked. Yet they still don't get it. They should try playing their fucking games and get great at them so they can understand how to balance shit. Not even MLG settings can save this turd.

You know we're talking about Halo 4, right? And I suggest you read those insanely low reviews and look at the rest of their articles before slapping any type of 'they had their reasons' label on them. Also, unlike Tomb Raider, SimCity, and Bioshock, Halo is one of, if not the, biggest victims to fanboy hate.

Dude isn't even talking about userscore, he is talking about sites saying Halo needs iron sights.

No. Bungie gave up their stake in the franchise to work on new IPs under different publishers. Initial plans may have been different, but by 2011 we all knew that Bungie was almost completely severing their ties with Halo for the foreseeable future.
