XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade) News, Announcements, Reviews, and Impressions Thread

That is one of the best games I've played on XBLA. Very challenging and fun. I usually don't buy DLCs but I bought the last one just to thank them for the game (and the DLC was meh but that's okay).

So any word on what games are going to be in the Microsoft sale? These last sales were very disappointing.

majornelson: Just got look at the list for the Microsoft Game Studio sale tomorrow. Some good XBLA stuff will be on sale for 50% off

majornelson: Mark of the Ninja, Dust: an elysian Tail, Deadlight to name a few

majornelson: I'll post the complete list tomorrow.

YESSS!!!!! Mark Of The Ninja bought!

Is Deadlight good? Lordji, I believe you said you didn't like that game in the Achieve Trophies thread? I can't remember.

Deadlight is awful!

I'll copy my Steam review:

Beautiful game, really really beautiful. Too bad it's the only good thing about the game. Awful controls, combat, pacing, plot and writing.

Definitely NOT recommended!

I thought Deadlight was decent. It's fairly short and enjoyable but does have some bouts of frustration due to some control issues and enemy behavior. I think it's worth 600 points or whatever it'll be for sale. But if you don't have Mark of the Ninja or Dust those are much more worth your money. Odds are they'll be other games not mentioned worth your money before Deadlight, as well. I simply own most all of them already and ended up buying Deadlight due to the promotion at the time, I believe.

To me, it's not a very good game. It's a 2D platformer with awful controls and mechanics, really short and with very little rhythm and challenge. The game tries to bandwagon the zombies apocalypse thingy we've already had more than enough (to me). So, graphics are kinda neat in that way, the music feels like you've heard it hundreds of times already, and that's it (won't even spit on the plot, ugh that plot). The only thing that saves the game is the tone. And if like me you're fed up with that, then it's not worth even the 600 MSP of the sale price I got it in Christmas.

To everyone reading this thread and not having bought it yet: if Mark of the Ninja is on sale => insta buy.

I'll be happy if I see Perfect Dark and both Banjo games. :] Given the promotion for the month of April where you can get 800 points back if you purchase for 3200 pts worth of arcade game, it's the perfect opportunity. I'll probably be able to fullfill all the requirements for the punch card

I nabbed that ac3 season pass. I figured why not since I got the game free :b

I was thinking about taking the plunge on that as well. I'm one of the few here who enjoyed the game and still own my copy.

Is it worth it, or will a better sale on the season pass be around the corner?

Probably not in the near future. If you liked the base game, I'd say go for it. The DLC is brilliant and actually much more fun than the original game.

Nice, i'll probably get Mark of the ninja, hoping for Spelunky to go on sale as well.

I might give Pool Nation a go. I member liking the demo...

...and I have always had a weird fascination with Pool games ever since Lunar Pool.

Memories!!

Only four titles in the MS studio sale? I assume more will added throughout the day?

Quarrel for 200msp if a goddamn steal. Buy it people.

I'll download demos for Quarrel, Swarm and Mercury since I haven't played them.

I'm still waiting for The War Of Worlds, Black Knight Sword and Space Channel 5 Pt.2 to go on sale. :(

That was during the Christmas sale...

I know WWE '13 is at the top because of the publisher switch, but what about Tekken Tag 2?

Mercury and Quarrel at great. Word of caution, the frame-rate in Mercury takes a massive nosedive on occasion. I haven't played it a while, so it's possible they patched it.

That's a pretty decent list overall, might bite on the Pinball FX2 tables.

Everyone should buy ilomilo. One of my favourite games of all time (yes!). The puzzles are challenging and interesting, the art style and the world are so well realised, the soundtrack is just incredible and the story.. man, the story really got to me, more than almost any other game. It's simple and therefore powerful.

All the parts mesh perfectly to form a game I can't forget.

I've played Black Knight Sword. It's a very charming and beautiful game, but it isn't that fun to play. It is brutally difficult, so that's a plus if you are looking for a great challenge. But the game play isn't that compelling. It's a side-scrolling hack n slash with some platforming elements. If it ever becomes half off it would definitely be worth a look.

I'll check out demos for Quarrel, Guardian Heroes, and ilomilo. But Miles Quaritch and Phonomezer (and other members of XBLA-gaf), can you say what you think is so good about Quarrel and Guardian Heroes? SirFisher practically sold me on ilomilo from his description alone.

Looks like I'm buying the following:

ilomilo
Mark Of The Ninja
Trials HD
Trials Evolution + its DLC

I can comment on three games that are part of this sale:

1) Dust An Elysian Tail: must-buy. This is a fantastic hack n slash RPG. It's a 2-d sidescroller, it has an impressive story that you wouldn't expect from a game with that furry art style, the story approaches the idea of moral ambiguity early on, the voice acting is hilarious, and more importantly the game play is really fun. The battle system is fast-paced and satisfying.

2) Winterbottom: must-buy for any puzzle lovers. This is one of the best puzzle games on the 360. What a fantastic little title. It's got a black-and-white art style, quirky music, and puzzles that will stump your head and make you feel great for solving them.

3) Axel and Pixel: decent game. An enjoyable game in my opinion, and although I like it, I can't rate it as well as "juggernauts" like Winterbottom or Dust. This is a point-and-clicker through and through, so if you don't like that genre (aka Monkey Island, Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk, Walking Dead XBLA, Layton, etc...) then don't bother with this game. But if you do like point-and-clickers, you'll enjoy the funny art style and surreal atmosphere in each chapter.

My only quarrel with Quarrel is how near impossible it is to play the ai at higher levels.
It's physically impossible to type in anything (let alone a good word) as fast as the ai does and in a lot of modes being fastest means you win any tie on points.

Fun with mere mortals though

So far, I got ilomilo and.... sega bass fishing...

Bass fishing for $5 is worth the Dreamcast nostalgia for me.

I thought the newer Pinball FX2 'Zen Classics' were on sale, but it was an older classics pack I already had...

-and what the heck, no sale on the GoD version of WWE Allstars? (although, just checking it- is some of the the dlc for that on sale?)
