The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

it always feels REALLY gross when jeff seemingly starts enjoying the discussion of just how many ways a game/toy maker can dupe people into spending money. he did it most recently talking about the new skylanders game coming, and then again in the infinity quick look.

i mean, i can respect the sheer (vile) genius behind the disney infinity platform, but i have to tap into a pretty dark part of my soul to do it.

I dunno, seeing that he loves early tansformers I can see him being fascinated by that sort of business practice.

Somehow having a physical object seems to make it ok.

That Toy Box mode actually looks pretty cool, my 8 year-old self would fucking love this game. All you would have to tell me is that I would get to fly around with Buzz Lightyear's jetpack and I'd be sold.

What? The real reason is obviously, "We want to force people to buy all the toys so they can access all the playsets."

It's like they took the idea of Skylanders and made it even more insidious.

That sounds about right.

At the very least it looks like a much better game than Skylanders. The gameplay in Skylanders always looked like absolute trash.

I agree the toy box mode sounds potentially interesting for people that are into that sort of thing. Same with Little Big Planet, brilliant concept, but I couldn't care less.

What really irks me about it is the business model. I don't really know anything about Skylanders so I don't know if this is true with that, but the whole notion that the models and dock thing even exist seem entirely superfluous to the game. Fair enough if you want to make accessories and sell them to increase your business, but at least have a reason for them.

And the idea of having to buy those modifier things blind is just vile.

People are pretty much paying for the novelty, and that's fine since there aren't a lot of them (yet). But if this propagates too much the concept will receive a lot of hate.

I think it helps in Disney Infinity's case that the toys actually look well designed with a neat vinyl toy aesthetic. They're something I'd probably buy a few of myself even if there was no game attached which is not something I could ever say about the Skylanders who IMO fliplop between just plain shitty designs, and designs that look cool but the toys themselves look terrible

Toys with good build would help a lot yeah, if you pack up the game for good you could always just display the toys on a shelf since they look not cheap.

Yeah, I think in Infinity's case, it helps that the toys are based on pre-existing IPs because they could be collectable outside the game. I know I'll buy a few from IPs that I'm interested in, at least it gives some IPs a chance to have figures at all, depending on how deep they go.

"At least plant a torch so folks at home can see what's going on."

Jesus, Brad, it's not like you are going to go poor if you plant some torches in your world here and there, at least to know where you are going. Thank god for Jeff being there.

It's a shame he didn't find a pair of night vision potions in a chest!

Pretty poor form to rag on Notch for a rumour that turned out to be false too.

Does anyone know what that website was where you can sort through the GB Quick Looks by staff? Forgot to bookmark it and trying to find a QL.

Much appreciated!

I wonder if Slender would be as popular without the youtube personality trend of the last couple of years. It seems like a game designed for dick heads to sit and play while recording with a webcam.

It's pretty sad that this site absolutely demolishes the sorting features on the actual site. If he adds a system filter it would be perfect.

Adding in different shows would be great: At the moment, their content is all over the place (a lone TNT, for example, can only be found in the "Features" section) and there's no easy way to discern GiantBomb content from third party trailers.

They should at least have added a new category for their Wednesday show. The search function with its tiny results window is terrible as well.
