Dead Space 3 is not a good game.

I'm actually pretty pissed with this game. After the great first game and the amazing second game, I'm left with a sour taste in my mouth with the third installment.

I'm on chapter 14 and I was just told to
recover the rest of Rosetta's slabs
. What the fuck.

And that basically sums up the whole Dead Space trilogy for me. It's a huge chore-fest. The first game was at least atmospheric, and the second game had a good story and great gameplay design that added to the first game. The third game is just a side-step, and is really fucking boring. The story sucks, the combat sucks because it's so damn easy, and the only redeeming quality is the upgrade system and the cool first third of the game while you explored different spaceships.

I also hate the stupid romantic subplot. All the characters are unlikable, and the necromorphs are just not scary anymore. If they're gonna make another Dead Space, they should take cues from the first and second game, and actually make the Plasma Cutter a viable weapon again.

Once the plot ventured outside of aliens and creepy abandoned space stations, I lost interest. I liked Dead Space better before Visceral proved they don't know how to do proper characterization.

It's just so uninteresting. Every objective you have is uninteresting. You're not a badass space engineer, you're a fucking errand boy that is pussywhipped by the only attractive human female alive at this point.

All the warning signs were there pre-release.

You're surprised at the outcome?

Well, I liked the first game and loved the second game. Why would I not play the third?

The game was great.

I loved the crafting, the Co-Op and the story.

also the slabs in chapter 14 are the BEST part of that game, you're trippin.

I just started that part, but once I heard the objective was another fetch and quest one, I just thought, "give me a fucking break."

It's also in between a survival horror game and a straight-out third person shooter. At least Resident Evil 6 knew what it wanted to be. This game tries to remain faithful to its predecessors while appealing to the shootbangers (badass gun btw.)

There's one section in (I believe) Chapter 15 that made me cast the game off entirely. I beat it but I can score it no higher than 1/10 for that section.

I played Dead Space 2 and 3 consecutively which made DS3's fault all the more obvious. Standard Necromorphs have much worse models. Lunar colony and the ships in orbits have low quality, repeating interiors even though the concept of ship hopping sounded really cool.

Finally the weapons crafting allows you to break the game. 1/3 of the way through I built Mjolinr's Hammer. One shot kills an enemy and inflicts homing damage on every single other enemy. Then after that I unlocked the spear-minigun and rocket launcher combo with stasis. Every enemy gets frozen in their tracks as you turn them into mincemeat.

edit: oh and don't forget universal ammo, on top of showering you in ammo and health items. I never lacked for supplies.

Everything good about this game lasts about 30 minutes at most (the part you're exploring abandoned spaceships, wondering through open space, etc.).

Everything else is terrible. A boring corridor shooter.

And my God does it drag on forever. Go there, climb up. Climb up. Climb up. Climb up.

Climb down. Climb down.

The fuck.

I thought it was a decent game, but a very poor Dead Space game. The clearest example of the downward spiral the survival horror genre is in.

Not a terrible game by any stretch, but it is in a cluttered genre and pales in comparison to the first in the series.

Action! Action! Action!

Dead Space 1: Got my trusty Plasma Cutter here.. okay probably a bad guy or two here, I'll stasis him, take off a limb use TK + limb on second one, finish off first one, low on ammo have to be careful.

Dead Space 3: Okay door is malfunctioning and here comes one, two, three, four.. jesus and they are running. Wait for all to gang up around him, points Rocket Launcher + Safety Guard at feet, pew pew pew.

Pretty much this. I've kept the first two Dead Space games, but I sold this one after I beat it. I just couldn't see myself playing this one again.

The game is an absolute snore that overstays its welcome by several hours. The necromorphs stop being scary once they start throwing waves and waves of them at you - and you dispatch them with such great ease and speed it's a wonder they ever did any damage in the first place. Pretty much everything after you get onto the planet is total and complete garbage. The 'quests' are all MMO level fetch this, fetch that grinds and the less that's said of the [end game spoilers]
ridiculous end boss
the better. It's such an affront to the series and an absolutely disgraceful way to end the trilogy.

I couldn't even say it was a decent game. It's trite, boring and totally lacks any charisma or redeeming qualities whatsoever.

I agree that it's okay, it's just not good, which is a travesty since both of its predecessors were more than good.

Yeah, I rented it a few weeks ago... Resident Evil 6 gets a lot of shit but I think DS3 deserves just as much. Really disappointing sequel.

Also, lol @ Elton John being the primary antagonist.

Edit: I also wanted to mention how messy the story seemed from a singleplayer perspective ($10 to play coop... ahahahaha!). Carver was shown throughout the game but in little more than a "redshirt" / background grunt capacity. It isn't until the ice planet that he's given more screen time and elevated to main character status. Really messy.
And don't get me started on the love triangle.

Yea I didn't like it at all.

Yes they abandoned horror for action, but the action isn't even very good. Every single encounter is the same. You get locked in a room, hordes of enemies spill out of every vent and you sit in a corner shooting them all till they stop. *EVERY* room in the game does this, so there is absolutely 0 tension. You never wonder if something is going to jump at you, because you know with absolutely certainty, that yes, something is going to jump out of that vent.

Terrible game. It's a shame as I really liked the previous 2 (especially the first).

I wish the entire Unitology plotline was left out entirely, of the entire series.

I didn't mind it in the first game. But I guess it's not hard to ignore something that is such a minor part of the game.

This series just sums up this generation for me. I loved the first game to death. The combat felt unique, all of the weapons had their strengths and weaknesses and were balanced well. I loved how you felt so isolated throughout the entire game, making the moments were you actually found another human feel important. Then 2 came out, focused way more on scripted moments, dumb story, made a silent protagonist a speaking character, and jammed in those terrible psychosis moments.

I didn't even bother to finish the game, and everything I saw from Dead Space 3 looked like garbage.

I liked Dead Space 3. I liked that you're
visiting an alien planet and also get to know what caused the plague.
I also really liked the atmosphere in the game, felt like Dead Space to me :)

Dead Space 1 had more than just the plasma cutter as weapons though. It is also possible to play through Dead Space 3 using nothing but the plasma cutter as well, that is how i played Dead Space 3 (and i played on the Hard difficulty level as well). The game is not designed so that you have to use other weapons than the plasma cutter. Having played through Dead Space 1, 2 and 3, i never really saw the complaint about Dead Space 3 being more of an action game. It felt just like Dead Space 1 and 2 to me.

I enjoyed all 3 Dead Space games.

DS3 only disappointed me because to accommodate co op they had to make enemies bullet sponges.

In DS 1 and 2 enemy balance was perfect, specially on 2. Enemy balance on DS3 is a little fucked even on single player.

The first half of DS3 is classic DS as far as setting goes. It's really great, specially when you get outside of the flotilla for the first time.

Story wasn't that great, but wasn't horrible either as far as DS games goes.

To me DS 1 is still the pinnacle of consoles survivor horror games. Better than even RE4, it's most obvious influence.

DS1 >>> DS2 > DS3.

So DS3 was still really enjoyable IMO, and I'm curious about were they are taking the franchise next gen. I just hope they correct some mistakes they made in 3. And frankly, make side quests more meaningful or just ditch then altogether.

Mainly, make enemy balance (health, placement and numbers) on single player more similar to DS1 and 2. They can go crazy on co op if they want, but they need to separate both experiences better concerning gameplay.

Even then, the way Visceral handled co op is a thousand times better than anything Capcom has tried with RE for example.

Agree with everything OP says. Though I will admit that I thought the intro to Tau Volantis was one of the best parts of the series. A bright spot in an otherwise mediocre game.

It really bums me out that I was able to do three playthroughs of DS1 and five playthroughs of DS2, but am struggling to even finish my second playthrough of DS3. That game is full of filler. And the parts that aren't filler just aren't very good.

Also, smh at the people shitting on Dead Space 2.

I really disliked the fact that you could only carry two weapons. I was less inclined to experiment because I always wanted my essentials, and the universal ammo meant I never felt any pressure to change.

I can't really see any reason why they took them out other than to waste a spot with their micro-transaction robot.

If you consider Dead Space 2's story good, then 3's must be really bad.

Isaac was a total errand boy in the first game, it's only in the second that he has some agency.

Yeah, it got a bit wavey.

Dealing with this game's problems was pretty hard.
Even the classic horror elements felt half-baked.
All of the encounters with human enemies suck.
Don't even get me started on the boss fights.

Some of the guns were cool, I guess.
Part of my problem with the crafting, though, is the insidious microtransaction inclusion.
Any game that costs 60 bucks shouldn't need microtransaction support.
Come on, that works for F2P games, but not AAA products.
Earning the in-game currency felt like playing an iOS game.

The co-op was at least a nice feature.
Horror games are typically better alone, but it works for action/horror.
Resident Evil 5 was a decent experience with another person.
Early on, I thought the co-op would add a lot.
Eventually, though, it became a slog, even with a friend.

So really, I guess the game is a product of misaligned expectations.
Usually, games like this are at least mildly entertaining.
Co-op can add a lot to a good game.
Knowing that Dead Space was great solo, though, makes it feel unnecessary.
Show me a new co-op game that isn't a third person shooter, please.

To be honest I thought it was a pretty good for a third entry in a series.

It wasn't the step-down that, say, Res evil 3 was after two. Hell, even Silent Hill 3 was a significant step-back from its predecessors in gameplay and story terms.

The reality is that the more familiar you get with the monsters and the overall format of games like this, the more the impact dissipates.

The only thing I didn't like about Dead Space 3 was the love triange, what they did to Ellie, bullet sponge human and necormorph enemies (moreso humans though, they had guns and would shoot you), and how it really started to drag and suck after Chapter 14. Aside from that the rest, especially the beginning in space part was great!
