What happened to Sony people praising options the other day and now that Microsoft is rumored to be adding a option for full-BC to the X720 it's all turned around and now options are a bad thing?

This is a optional premium for those that don't have a X360 or get rid of their X360 and want one later.

Yeah, it seems like a good way to allow for full BC for those who want it without making it a standard feature which would put the price of the Nextbox up for everyone.

You can't do that, they have to be attached to each other by an external interface, it effectively says so in the vgleaks article, otherwise there would be nothing stopping them from doing that with the old 360.

If you have a 360 already, you don't need to buy it.

You can buy it and just use it as a stand-alone streaming box/XBLA box.

You can buy it and use it for the above, and to get full hardware-based BC for 360 games with Durango.

So why is that bad again? Compare it to the PS4 which has no hardware-based BC at all, no option to add it, and you'll only be able to play old games if they can get the "aspirational" game streaming service up and running, which is always online by its very nature, is inferior by its very nature, will probably not offer all of the games that you want due to licensing issues, and you'll almost certainly have to pay again to play games you've already bought at least once.

That's a good idea also but if it's done this way you can separate it from the X720 and let someone in another room use the add-on to play X360 games while you continue to play your X720.

I much prefer this method of BC. Give me the option goddamnit. Ill pay a little extra for full BC of the library i have spent freaking 1000s of dollars on. Its the notion that that library will suddenly be unsupported and outdated that always makes me ill. I have like 60 Xbox 1 games stored away in a box i never use because there are no good emulators and my original XBOX died on me. I'd have to rely on second-hand markets to get a replacement and the first xbox is huge as fuck as far as shelf space is concerned.

This saddens me too, It's not going to happen but if they were to release a original Xbox add-on also for $50-$75 with a controller I'd jump on it.

That's a nice idea, but doing it this way allows MS to sell the TV box as well, so for them it is killing two birds with one stone.

Yeah, it's the same for me. Honestly I never use BC and chances are I won't touch it next-gen either. But it's just kind of a principle thing.

Let me be as clear as possible with this for you...

Microsoft and Sony are businesses that need your money to survive and will take any attempt they can to take as much of it as possible to continue to exist.

People with X720s that used to have PS3s or no longer have a X360 might want the ability to play their old X360 games in the future, it isn't that hard to understand.

If I buy a PS4 I wouldn't mind the ability to buy a PS3-addon that would allow me to play any PS3 games that I might've missed.

This is the dumbest idea ever. Buying a console that piggybacks off another console to give me BC from my last console doesn't sound like the best way to go about this.

It's really the only way they can go about it just because the architecture for Durango cannot work with 360 games. This lets people who want BC to have it and people who don't won't have to pay the extra price for it.

Why? May 21st is the Tuesday before Memorial Day in US; the unofficial start of summer here. There will be a lot of talk at family get togethers. And then June brings E3 and the BUILD conference. They could even run teaser ads in movie theaters during the summer.

Microsoft will have a lot of momentum going through the summer especially if they release the Mini-Xbox during the summer with the new controller. They could do a deal with Gamestop and Best Buy over the summer where you preorder Durango when you buy the Xbox-mini.

You mentioning to the controller gave me a idea. If this add-on comes with a new controller it might be a opportunity for people to get a second controller along with BC at the same time. If they release it before the X720 it would be a way to get a new controller and be ready to have BC at the very start.

If it was part of the 720 you'd be paying for it whether you wanted to or not. This makes BC optional for those who want it. There are plenty of reasons for people to buy it.

Option 1 is BC hardware it's built into the 720 and it costs extra, even if you don't care about BC.

Option 2 is there is no BC at all.

Option 3 is what this rumour is about: an optional add-on for those who do want BC.

This seems like the best way to go?

They more than likely won't market it as something for Durango BC. It will be marketed as a small streaming media device that's able to play a large library of games at a cheap price.

People who want BC for the Durango will more than likely be prompt (in various ways) as to what they'll need to get in order to have it.

The old Xbox 360 is not going to disappear from store shelves instantly. If you don't want the $99 Xbox there is the old $199 version with a disc drive. If you want to get ready for the next generation without feeling like you are wasting your money there is the $99 console with the new controller. You get a second controller and backwards compatibility for your Durango and you get to space out the cost of the new system over time instead of all at once. Also more importantly it plants a flag that you are probably buying the Durango this year and maybe not the PS4.

Just because you have a PS3 does not entitle you to play PS3 games on your PS4 (at least, as far as we know).

Similarly, owning a 360 does not entitle you to play 360 games on the Durango (at least, as far as we know).

This rumour indicates that they're offering a cheap stand alone device, that - in addition to its media capabilities - can be connected to the Durango to enable BC.

Essentially, without pricing themselves out of the market by including BC by default. They have given the consumer more options.

Well, I hope this turns out to be true. The BC solution sounds a bit clunky and I'll not buy into it but it's nice to have for the few people who need it. Gakai's purpose is not for backwards compatibility. Sony has much bigger plans for Gakai/cloud gaming then just BC.
