So not only did Iwata not resign as he suggested, he kinda got a promotion? lolz.

Not sure shuffling current people is gonna help.

See, more proof that Nintendo doesn't understand online! Iwata, you don't need to come to America to troll NeoGAF, you can do it right from your home in Japan!

I like Iwata. I give him credit for outselling the competition and selling more last generation. It was a gamble that paid off handsomely. They put less tech in and improved their position. They are in a better position for this generation where they can perservere and will avoid the Sega Situation. Not sure why people want him fired.

Kimishima seemed to be just a misdirection step for NOA as Reggie is really the one running the operation. Now Reggie reports to Iwata directly which should hopefully streamline things.

THinking about this further, I'm not sure what this really means. It could be interpreted as a demotion ie Iwata is being sent away from the real power centre of NCL to the (sure, important) subsidiary of NoA.

It could be a temporary thing, to deemphasise Iwata's influence until they see if the WiiU situation turns around.

ahahaha - like half of GAF was so certain, but i told ya'll - you just cant let a man go with that kinda hair

seriously though, NOA has been a goddamn useless mess for years now, can't see this as anything but an improvement

As above this is a token change at best. Ever since Howard Lincoln and co left NoA have been nothing more then puppets and placeholders for Nintendo Japan. Like hell NoA have had any influence in the way Nintendo operated in the past decade. They just do what they're told.

Iwata and Nintendo Japan have no clue about the western market or audience IMHO. They're too Japan-centric, to isolated internally, this token change of the guard won't do shit to fix the Wii U. If Nintendo had any clue about the western market they never would have released it

Not just that but Nintendo are promoting the head of Nintendo America? Seriously after all the issues they have had?

Nintendo IMHO are are a boys club. Sticking by their colleauges irrespective of how incompetent they are. they also have that Japanese cultural bs where sacking someone or demoting is avoided at all costs as that would make them look weak.

Too all those still supporting Iwata. enjoy watching him burn Nintendo to the ground

flawless

Iwata is so incompetent he can't even resign correctly.

ahahaha i hate to admit it, but i was waiting for this post

this post hints at, but makes no sense

1) the era where someone like Lincoln could have that kind've power over 3rd parties is long over, and frankly for the better

2) while this could be taken as an attempt to work more with that market, you're instead basically saying that releasing their last product at all means they know nothing...kind've a dead argument to make there, at least on the topic at hand

So Iwata has an out, and Nintendo can train his replacement now already once Iwata is relieved of his duties as CEO in the future?

Correct.

Iwata is getting cold feet about him being able to meet the FY 2014 goals.

But obviously he wants to stay within Nintendo....it's his pride and joy. By becoming Nintendo of America CEO, he can stay within the company if the Board of Directors ousts him next year as CEO.

It's quite a brilliant move by Iwata, actually. Either way, he gets job security.

Also, Nintendo's decade-old board of directors seem to be retiring at a rapid rate these days.

Here's their core:

Yoshihiro Mori - Retiring this year
Shinji Hatano
Genyo Takeda
Shigeru Miyamoto - Retiring from EAD
Nobuo Nagai - Died early 2012
Masaharu Matsumoto - Retiring this year
Eiichi Suzuki

The same stuffy corporate Nintendo is slowly eroding. What that means for the future is uncertain.

I think this move will benefit NOA a lot. At least, it will have better communications between NCL/NOA, and Iwata (as NOA CEO) can pressure NCL to drive faster localizations or improve its current hardware SKUs (white 3DS/XL, etc)

Iwata can also start going around America to get more third party support.

GAF: Resign, Iwata!!

IWATA: You can't win, GAF... if you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.

Yes I know he dies later in that scene, but his influence remains anyway.

I updated the title a bit.

The guy who was NoA's CEO was promoted to the Japanese position most likely to get Iwata's job were Iwata to leave, and Iwata subsumed his old job.

I just want a fucking account system, don't care who implements it.

I hope this means we won't have to deal with fighting for games like we saw with rainfall.
I'd hope that iwata being there means NoA will actually be relevant and not just a front that can't actually do anything.

So in other words, he's the new guy in "CEO of NCL" training.

Considering a lot of NoA's former ineptitude I'm not so sure whether even when compared to Iwata if that should be considered good thing or a bad thing.

It should be interesting to see how this plays out. If Iwata is really going to be in America for a size-able portion of the tenure, he should be able to meet with western third parties. That alone means any deals he see fit can be made at that time, and not have to go through a large process of being run through NOJ. Not to mention, having an actual game developer on hand/the president of Nintendo in western third party meetings can only do good compared to Mr. figure-head Reggie.

Either way, a change in NOA was needed.
