Polygon Rumor: Xbox 720 DRM, Achievements, Friendslist, and Share feature info

Share buttons are the new rumble.

Wii U - Post screenshots straight from game to Miiverse

PS4 - Share button + record gameplay, share it / others can join in and watch you

Durango - DVR and share gameplay highlights

Interesting how every company seems to be jumping on the "interconnected" bandwagon in various capacities.

Nintendo's Miiverse is a wasted opportunity in my opinion, if only they offered video recording and sharing capabilities, Miiverse could have been incredible.

I don't think I'll be very interested in seeing anyone's canned Xbox highlight reel. If anything, it'll just annoy me and cause me to unfriend/unfollow them quicker.

It's Polygon, i.e. Microsoft's mouthpiece, so undoubtedly right. Now for the gossip. I reckon they always had the DVR setup, being an entertainment hub more than game console from the outstart, but were flustered by Sony's conference on sharing gameplay vids and retroactively worked that in.

I'm not so sure. They (MS) had a patent on video sharing/creating video guides and sharing them since 2010 if I'm not mistaken. It sounds like something they had planned for quite some time.

UStream is shit, where's the TwitchTV?

Also where the games at?

Are console makers snubbing Twitch? Anyways, cool stuff. I know there was a thread where people said stuff like this was useless but those are probably the same people who don't see fun in taking/sharing screenshots.

ugh, there should just be a mega "Polygon Rumor" thread.
KuGsj.gif
It's kinda ridiculous.

I merged the threads and retitled this one to be a bit more obvious.

Good move.

I'm not clear on the "specific hilights" thing (head shots etc). Isn't it better to just have a continuous buffer, which the player opts to trim and save out whenever they feel like it?

Indirectly confirmed.
Can you post first hand or second hand sources so I don't have to take this at face value because I read it as a third-hand source in a forum post?

Even worth making a new thread for IMO, as I think I've been following all the new consoles and a direct contradiction of what Shuhei Yoshida was saying in the Eurogamer interview in February is news to me.

People are also forgetting that Sony admitted it's giving 3rd parties the OPTION to block used game sales on the PS4.

Technically publishers can do that on current gen hardware. Just force a code redemption/authentication and boom blocked used games sales. The thing is no publisher wants to look like a prick and would rather have a platform wide mandate so they don't look like the bad guys.

I like the idea of per-game communities and constant in game updates and feedback.

For example when making a conversation choice in Mass Effect, you could see who on your friends list or the total # of people who picked what choice. It'd be pretty awesome

That sounds terrible, like a perfect opener for annoying, unrelated game stuff popping up, or ad related content.

If they manage to make intrusive, unrelated game content like that acceptable, ad-related content won't be far off. It's a perfect opener for allowing unrelated, intrusive and annoying stuff in the games. For an example of something similar, try out a flash game on any site.

On my phone. So, no. But look at the alternative: is Sony going to block games that require it even for arbitrary reasons?

Given Vox's relationship with MS, I can't trust Polygon or The Verge about anything regarding MS. That the article was written by Crecente is icing on that cake for me.

I'd have thought Twitch would be the default streaming site MS would use.

Not unexpected, I've wanted this for years.

Interesting.

Hmm, this gives too much control to publishers. Not sure about this.

Finally, more more caps.

I think this gives publishers enough rope to hang themselves. If anyone else goes the EA route they'll likely get burned badly.

I don't want to speculate as that means my own biases and thoughts get muddied up in the issue.

I would like to have statements made by representatives of the company.

"currently the next Xbox will capture your gameplay as if it were a DVR, allowing you to go back and select highlights. That function can be turned on or off, or a player can set up the console to automatically capture a recording when certain in-game events occur, like a headshot or collecting a specific achievement. Auto capturing those "magic moments" will be a feature only available on next-gen games."

This sounds cool. Sounds like a reaction to what Sony is doing, but the ability to set it to record when you get a specific achievement is kind of neat.

No, not at all. All Sony said was that it would be up to publishers whether or not their games would require constant internet access and that the PS4 the self would not block used games.

It's effectively a used games block. It'll be the evolution of online passes. All he confirmed is that the PS4 will not block used games on a console/OS level. Which is what the entire controversy is about. It's not whether they'll do it, it's to what degree.

The next-generation Live won't have a cap on the number of friends a person can have. The way players add friends will also change. Now instead of it being a two-way friendship only, people can choose to follow one another, sort of like Twitter.

Speaking as someone who never got a Twitter...is this not creepy as shit? Why is this an accepted thing these days?

Oh look, I'm going to "follow" you now and you have choice in the matter. They should just change the term to "stalk" and get it over with. The whole point of a friendship is it's supposed to be two-way. You don't just decide someone is going to be your friend now. That's called stalking.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/pre-owned-games-block-on-ps4-is-a-publisher-decision/0111344

GameSpot asked Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida in a quickfire Q&A not if PS4 would block used games but whether second hand games will require an activation code on the console.

His answer: “It's a publisher decision. We are not talking about it. Sorry.”

Being my friend on XBL and "following" me is essentially the same thing. How is it creepy? Follow just means you may get more updates on the games they are playing or something.

No, because I can't be your friend unless you accept my friend request. Hence, 2-way. Or did I misunderstand the Twitter thing

It'll be more like Google+, I assume.

I can follow you, but it's pointless unless you share things with me.

Their response to the question is exactly clear.

If games require online activation, it's blocking used games by default. it's just pushing the blame onto publishers, as MS now also seem to be doing.

I think this gives publishers enough rope to hang themselves. If anyone else goes the EA route they'll likely get burned badly.

Indeed. I suspect we'll see a flurry of persistent online games at launch though. There will an attempt to make this the norm on both consoles, it all depends on how we, as consumers, react this move by publishers.

Oh, I get you now. I'd assume (if it's like twitter) you can set it so if someone wants to follow you they have to ask. You can do it on Twitter now, so I don't see why the Xbox wouldn't handle it the same way.

Check the first hand source and not the interpretation of MCVUK.com

On possibility of PS4 blocking used games
"When you purchase the disc-based games on PS4, it should work on any hardware. So that's what I'm saying."

On activation codes for secondhand PS4 titles
"It's a publisher decision. We are not talking about it. Sorry."

Activation codes for second hand titles already exist. That's not blocking used games, although they technically can. But the first statement can not be ignored, lest you be accused of cherry picking quotes.

Their response to the question is exactly clear.
If it was clear there wouldn't be a variety of interpretations and contradicting statements on various games media websites that attended that Q&A.
