Grand Theft Auto IV has the best driving physics of any open-world game, ever

Currently playing Sleeping Dogs and, while I'm enjoying it overall, the driving physics really bother me. Makes driving (or should I say, flying) through the city boring and honestly kind of a chore. Rockstar knocked it out of the park when it comes to the driving aspect with GTAIV. The controls and physics kept you alert, and thus, engaged during travel from mission to mission. The hood cam made it even better and more immersive (shame Sleeping Dogs doesn't have one; I'd love to be able to appreciate the finer details of the city that way).

I pray that V will continue IV's driving model!

Sleeping Dogs driving FAR surpasses that of GTA IV. GTA IV is leaps and bounds better than the previous GTAs, maybe, but Sleeping Dogs is where it's at.

I looooove the weighty physics of GTAIV. I guess I'm in the minority on that one, but I found it incredibly satisfying. The disappointing part of GTAIV is the mission design.

Having played GTA4 last night, in an attempt to finish it before 5 comes out (I don't have a lot of free time for games anymore,) I have to agree. The physics are phenomenal, and I hope they don't change them too much.

lol Shirley, you jest.

It's like people who tell me they enjoy playing games on the easiest difficulty. I mean, how?

You're glued to the road in Sleeping Dogs. It requires zero effort to get around. How is that fun?

I agree.
Most people hate on the driving but I think it's fucking awesome and fun.
Takes actual skills.

Without a doubt true.

They have real depth to it, they are not challenging once you know how to drive in game, reward those who know how to drive, they give that real sense of achievement and satisfaction when driving ( sounds weird, but that is how I fell when driving in IV compared to other games) and they are just one of the best things to happen in open world games IMO.

From things like tyres locking if you break to hard to crashing if you accelerate while turning, it makes sure you use the breaks effectively and it may sound a lot to take in but once you get the idea ( did this within 1 hour of playing) you will not only love it but realise just how much better it is compared to other games.

Try turning WHILE NOT GOING FAST or accelerating and it won't feel like a boat, I don't care what the dev said.

I KNOW it is not perfect, but they are amazing. Improvements can be made.

Funny guy. It's maybe most physics, not the best physics.

No car in any sane universe skids and slips around like the abominations in GTA IV.

Still, it's fun.

Yup, they nailed it with IV.

I haven't played Sleeping Dogs yet, but from what I've seen in videos it looks a lot more arcadey than GTA IV.

By far. But it also fits the style of the game. Saints Row has never been particularly good at it, but I haven't played 3. The driving in 1 and 2 was atrocious.

Someone else noted in a previous thread the cars have too much oversteer, but they're still quite wrangleable and satisfying as fuck, especially in comparison to pretty much every non-racing game. I loved watching my car bounce around through elevation changes like the first trailer.

I agree with the op. I loved how the cars felt like they actually had some weight to them. I had more fun driving around in GtA IV than any other open world game.

Driving was fine in GTA IV, but nothing amazing I think.

Still far better than the driving in Saints Row 3 and Sleeping Dogs for me though. Can't remember entirely but I think the driving in Mafia II was pretty good though?

I never understood the hate for the cars in vanilla GTA. They were very easy to drive.

The motorcycles were terrible. But The Lost and the Damned fixed that.

I agree it has a more complex physics engine for the cars than all the other open world racers. The problem is the cars needed some more tweaking.

100% Agree with this post. Sleeping Dogs had some bland ass driving. GTA4 Physics were a lot of fun in and out of the cars.

YES!!!!!

Fuck no. In Sleeping Dogs there's two types of cars, fast and agile, then fast and slightly less agile. Driving in Sleeping Dogs is ridiculously simple, making it boring. You want awful car physics? Just Cause 2 is bad enough in that regard to make the grappling hook and parachute the only viable way to have fun traversing.

I agree with OP.
Though IV's physics were not that much "fun" as in San Andreas, they were very challenging. I really liked that aspect so I prefer IV's driving physics over SA's "fun" arcade-style physics.

For V Rockstar Games has announced that they want to improve the driving physics because they think in IV the cars sometimes felt like boats (wobbly and slippery).

If I remember correctly (long time since I played GTA4) but they went as far as modelling the clutch. The centre of gravity was artificially low, but otherwise it was an incredibly impressive bit of work for a game of such scope.

SD driving is fun and light. But overall I do prefer GTA:IV physics.

But comparing a 2012 game to a 2008 one is overall pretty pointless.

Lets see what R* are bringing with GTAV they have said they'll be tweaking the driving slightly. iirc they had brought some of the Midnight Club guys to look at how to balance it up

Totally agree, never really liked the totally unpredictable physics in earlier GTA games. IV is just damn fun to play, I honestly can't understand any complain relating to controls in the game.

The driving in sleeping dogs is awful! Extreme under steering ahoy!

This. Driving in Sleeping Dogs feels absolutely great and responsive.

No, it is twitchy, way too arcade, all cars feel the same and feels like the cars are on rails.

Better than SR, not IV, heck I prefer SA physics over SD.

I still don't understand how anyone enjoys all the driving in any open world game. It's commuting, almost as boring as it is in real life. I used the cabs every time I could in GTA IV.
