Microsoft: Next Xbox will work even when your Internet doesn’t

Waiting not so much patiently for the 21st...

I hope that in some years from now will be written report about this whole online story, would be really cool to know all the little pieces of the puzzle.

Waiting for that too!

So wait... Microsoft sends an internal e-mail to...People working on the new Xbox...

To tell them that it works without a connection...

Shouldn't they know this if they've been working on the damn thing?

What the heck is this?

That's what I thought too. It read like "Remember that always on thing you were doing? Response has been poor, so let's not"

That + there's no way they could react so quickly and change something so fundamental in a system they've been working on for years lol

That wouldn't be true, it's only software and I'm sure the OS is not finalized yet. It wouldn't be too hard for them to "hack" their own security system so that it always answers "yes" when asked if a game is allowed to run.
I don't believe in the last minute change, though. I'm sure they were aware of the possible negativity on such a feature, so the noise on forums shouldn't have been a surprise, nor a reason to change their strategy. If they decided at one point to have always online DRM, they knew it would happen.

I'm not saying they'll have GDDR5 RAM, but that they will pull something no on expected (Just like Sony did with 8GB GDDR5 RAM) I don't know if it'll be a better CPU, or GPU, or more RAM than people expected, or maybe full backwards compatibility, or maybe Microsoft will have some GDDR5 RAM themselves, but I'm willing to bet Microsoft will surprise a few people.

I really hope this is the case. I'm a big fan of nice tech and I'd like to see MS punching in the same weight as Sony. If their policies are the same, then those are the points I'm likely going to focus on when making my decisions.

Since I'm not planning on getting both, I'll want whichever has the best third party title performance, and since the platforms seem to have mostly the same baseline, I'd imagine whichever has the better ancillary tech will have the better performance.

So can we now get a confirmation on free online aswell?

Shitty practices not turning even shittier is not great news, they need to do more..

You can currently watch Live tv on your 360 with Windows Media Center. Unless they have changed something in the last two years.

I doubt that is what they mean though.

You can wath live TV if:

1) You have a PC with Media Center
2) You have a tv tunner card
3) The PC is turned on

Current Xbox 360 can work like a multimedia receiver (Hulu, Vudu, Netflix, etc), but it is slow, if you want to change from app to app it take sime time.

I want something like Roku/Apple TV (fast start up, fast change from app to app) and I want HTPC capabilities.

I would like it too but my tv has the satellite receiver built in so I won't be able to use it.
Maybe MS plans to integrate a receiver?

I don't think so, we need more details.

This needs to stop. It's not Ars vs EDGE, it's an internal email from Microsoft vs unfounded rumors.

There's literally no comparison between the two.

lol.

Both are unfounded. We know nothing of the sources for this e-mail. Actually, we know as much about the sources of this e-mail as we do for the sources of all the other rumors.

It begins.

It wasn't really Edge though. Other sites also echoed the same thing that the next Xbox will require an internet connection. Maybe Microsoft changed their policy at the last minute? Can't really say for sure. I think both Edge and Ars are accurate, just that Ars is reporting on the latest development.

An internal email from Microsoft vs reports from insiders that "can change" is not even remotely comparable. You can choose to doubt Ars Technica's credibility on this to suit your blatant agenda if you want, but there's no real tangible reason for anyone else to do the same.

I don't think any reasonable person on GAF really believed that the next Xbox would be online-required, so this is no surprise.

Yes, that's a given due to all the press this issue has been getting, but I'm not expecting Microsoft to answer any of those questions.

Why wouldn't they? The only reason they're holding back now is because the console didn't even exist until a few weeks ago.

Coming from the one who thinks that this internal e-mail is truth and gospel. We know nothing of Ars' source, or even that souce's source for the internal e-mail.

They didn't even bother to post the entire e-mail, if there was actually one.

Wouldn't you agree that a "rumored" internal e-mail from MS itself, posted by ARS and corroborated by Paul holds..idk..a slight bit more credence than a bunch of rumors from vague secondary sources?

Is this really hard to understand GAF?

We don't even know if the mail really exists. A "source" of Ars claims it. Same as a "source" for Edge claimed that Xbox is always online. They're both rumours. We really know nothing.

I'm pretty sure the always online debacle started with dev kits being required to be always online to control leaks. Didn't mean the final console would implement it. Anyway, hope we can move on from this crap.

Because Ars stated so? Unless we're dismissing their validity now.
Look at it this way, if this turns to be untrue and MS implements online only, Ars is gonna take a huge hit on it's credibility and will be a thing that will be remembered for centuries to come.

If not, there's nothing to fret about.

No, Paul tweeted that he'd only link to trusted sources, yet, he linked to his articles about always-online being true (this being a trustworthy source). Then he backtracked saying he "wasn't sure about what they meant" (lol). And now says he trusts Peter (the Ars editor) about a story about an e-mail (which is never fully posted) that doesn't come from Peter (his trusted source) but from some unknown, source.

EDGE posts about always-online, and about a bunch of specs for PS4. Specs turn out to be true, RAM upgrade turns out to be true... hur hur.

Ars source claims they have a mail from MS. Edge source claims they have documents from MS. We don't have any proof for both.
