Microsoft: Next Xbox will work even when your Internet doesn’t

He was fired for bringing very bad press and conducting himself inappropriately with the public, I imagine. Whether always online was true or not was not the issue.

Yeah I agree with that I'm mostly thinking about how dumb the guy was to go to war on a feature that may have never existed.

Assuming ars article is right and next xbox is not "internet connection required", then, Kotaku source was wrong (3 minutes if internet is lost), and maybe another rumors from Kotaku are wrong too.

Yeah... the only game she wants with that is Dance Central. Might work.

It's better that you spend that money on Xbox than on hookers.

I will try this on her first and see what she says. Reaction will be priceless.

It's only $299*!

Yeah... best not to mention money.

If you have any kids, just say you really want PS4, but the kids really want Xbox.

Or a second job

Or a different wife

Or sell one of those kids

No kids. So can't sell any. She's not going to go for the second wife thing. Already tried.

Not buying the PS3 again, so I don't need a second job.

Well, I think he didn't want to start a war. He said some stupid things without thinking (he didn't care whether or not the 720 will be always-online - so he couldn't understand the internet drama about it) but the internet pitchforks were already there to hunt for the final "always-on" confirmation...

I never believed this rumor, I'm sure Microsoft never even CONSIDERED making the NextBox Online Only.

Now watch on the 21st when Microsoft shows that they AREN'T 6 months behind, and they were never scrambling over the PS4 reveal. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if we were wrong the whole time and Microsoft has a trumph card themselves (like 8GBs GDDR5 RAM)
16GBs GDDR5 or bust.

Kotaku actually weighed in on this a little bit:
http://kotaku.com/report-the-next-xbox-will-let-you-play-games-offline-493136979

According to one source in a position to know, the recent drama involving former Microsoft creative director Adam Orth—whose controversial defense of "always on" triggered widespread Internet outrage—energized parties at Microsoft who have always been against the idea of an always-online console. This may have triggered a shift in policy at Microsoft. We reached out to the Xbox makers for comment, and we'll update should we hear back from them.

Who knows if thats what really happened but I thought it was interesting.

Your post was dumb as fuck, thats why I took it to heart. Maybe you should stick to being reasonable with your posts instead of ending them with fanboy rubbish.

My point is that Microsoft doesn't have the best track record, and I agree, this is definitely good news. I hope the next good news is that LIVE is free.

...

Let's take a look at your post history shall we?

What gaming brand are you loyal to?

Definitely Sony. They can make some really stupid decisions, but always at least seem to be humbled by them.

We are gamers and Microsoft has never really been pro gamer or consumer so while we trash Sony for being stupid at times, at least Sony isn't working against in the manner that Microsoft is.

Because being hopeful about anything Microsoft does that's pro consumer is the right way to go...

Every gen it's always the same from xbox fans and their fantasy tales of what "could be" or "would it be so cool" only to have Microsoft do the same shafting every time. How LIVE as a service doesn't get more shit is beyond me, but hey, they found some people willing to pay for it so I guess they just do it to themselves.

The fact that Xbox live is a scam in itself and then the contract is a twisted knife.

It doesn't have to be. Xbox Live is a fucking scam. But no, as a hardcore gaming community, let's just accept it and not show any disdain for a company that tries to take advantage of us.

I'm a PS4 fanboy, but lord, you are a special kind of ****.

I say the F, G and N words in real life, but I'd say I'm much more of an asshole on the internet.

Yeah...I'm going to guess that's not the reason why you got so butt-hurt at my post. In fact, I'd say you are the prime example of the kind of person I was talking about, which is why you got so butt-hurt. This is fucking hilarious. So EMOTIONALLY INVESTED my man.

"Durango [the codename for the next Xbox] is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today's Internet." It continues, "There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status. Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single player game."

Nice would set a terrible precedent. I'm still not that interested right now with my lack of interest in MS 1st party but now Im open to buying the console unlike some people here who seem to be melting down that the next Xbox isn't as big of a disaster as they thought and Sony will not walk away with next gen

Yeah...I'm going to guess that's not the reason why you got so butt-hurt at my post. This is hilarious.

Calm down Juancho.

Yeesh, the 21st cant come fast enough

Funny thing is that wording from that memo starts on a "Oh, here we go..." note with using word "tolerable of" but then thankfully it seem to dismiss any possibility of permanent connection check. It doesn't even really sound like there would be a steam-style one time installation DRM check, even though wording leaves some wiggle room there with 'playing' vs 'installing'.

I do however think that publishers will make more and more games that require persistent online connection simply by their nature of gameplay, which I'm not a big fan of, but what can you do.

Better be true. Also, that $15 a month for Xbox Live also better not be in Microsoft's plans.

That amount is what is rumored to be the price of a contract-based $299 system. If it works like the current $99 X360 contract option, it's the monthly installment toward that entry price for a two-year payment contract as well as full access to Live. The next-gen version of Live will supposedly include family accounts, similar to the $99/year family four-pack of Gold offered previously.

16GBs GDDR5 or bust.
I'm not saying they'll have GDDR5 RAM, but that they will pull something no on expected (Just like Sony did with 8GB GDDR5 RAM) I don't know if it'll be a better CPU, or GPU, or more RAM than people expected, or maybe full backwards compatibility, or maybe Microsoft will have some GDDR5 RAM themselves, but I'm willing to bet Microsoft will surprise a few people.
Sorry, it's hard for me to be negative when on GAF most rumors turned out to be negative, and whenever we get positive rumors news, those are always fake, because no way rumors can be positive. Always Online has now be debunked, after months of everyone saying "NO WAY IT'LL NO BE ALWAYS ONLINE. MICROSOFT DOOMED.", I can't wait till we find out all those other negative rumors aren't true. The only rumor I see being true is Kinect being always required.

Microsoft is going to surprise people on the 21st, just watch. Let's keep in mind, these are all rumors, for all we know the leaked specs we have could have been fake the entire time. Microsoft has been quiet the entire time with the NextBox, I expect surprises.

So they caved in or what?

Honestly, there's no way to know (until someone like Dean Takahashi writes a book on all the events behind the scene). They probably considered the possibility at one time (they have to consider all possibilities anyway, even the bad ones), but even assuming the leaks are true, there's nothing to tell us if it is a last minute change of plan or if it's been their target policy for months.

How could they cave when we don't know what they were doing to begin with? Jesus, everyone slow down and think.

Don't worry about it. Any negative rumor that turns out to be wrong will just be MS caving to the pressures of the internet. It's kind of impressive the negativity in MS threads is almost worse than Wii U threads and that console is already out.

I trust that Ars Technica did their due diligence but I'm going to wait until I hear it from the horse's mouth.

This! I won't be completely satisfied until MS publicly says it themselves. But coming from Ars, which is like the NY Times of tech news, where their name and reputation is at stake with every story they post, I feel a bit more at ease.

So does this go along with what Paul Thurrott said, that yes, online is required (probably to register a game), but it isn't as draconian as people are making it out to be (if your connection drops out, you don't get sent back to the dashboard)?

Yeah, but this E3 launch time feels way more stupid than the runup to X360/PS3/Wii. I blame the influx of bad posters that have been bringing down the collective IQ of NeoGAF.

Maybe. I'm not on here as much lately so in small doses I don't mind as much. But you're probably right and a lot of it has to do with the new posters.

Though I still smile when I see "________ has just shot themselves in the foot...."

That seals it, coming back to Xbox next gen.

Don't understand this at all. We know nothing else about the console. Why would this "seal" anything. I can understand only if you meant you're going to buy all consoles anyway.

That + there's no way they could react so quickly and change something so fundamental in a system they've been working on for years lol

Gtfo with that logic and positive thinking. This is a Durango thread. Shit on it or leave.

Don't drag peoples post history out, answer arguments or ignore instead. Geez.

Publicly available information. Plus, I responded to his arguments. It's when he decided to call my posts dumb without providing any reason as to why that I decided to look into his post history. I was curious as to why he got so offended to the point of calling me/my posts dumb and stupid. Took a look at his post history, wasn't surprised.

One funny part is some minority started to argue the credibility between EDGE ,Kotaku and Ars.

You can just say you won't like to believe. That's is more easy and straight.
