Mainly because a lot of the PS4 info leaked out before the conference. The only thing they kept really secretive was the 8 GB bombsell. But the share button, the GDRR5, the controller redesign, etc. were widely discussed before the unveiling. You can rest assured that their first party developers have probably been working together given Sony's history. None of this, "You have to create games while blindfolded, wearing ear plugs, and sending Zodiac letters," from Microsoft.
So then it's safe to assume you've never worked on a project as big as Durango that is soaked with an NDA.
Why would this e-mail have come out earlier than when MS wanted it to? As soon as they did, look at the results.

My sarcasm meter is completely fried thanks to this thread so I apologize if youre being sarcastic but I dont think this email was written for public consumption. It was written for MS employees.
I'm in the camp of this is a controlled leak but it's fairly obvious the nature of public outcry has been about "always online."
Even though the subtext for that outcry is what should matter, it wasn't how the public conveyed their displeasure to the console manufacturers.
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they missed or willfully ignored in trying to understand the underlying reasons to hate always online. Blocking used games was just one of many issues to hate it.
Fair enough. They were a bit lacking on the disclaimer part. I just don't necessarily agree they should be held to the same standard.

Computer forensics people for MS run EnCase Enterprise across the network searching the hard drives of everyone who got the email with key phrases from the email. They find the Word doc, the pdf and fragments of Gmail email on your work computer.
I hope whoever did it was more careful than that.
But here it went from a rumor or multiple rumors to a daily rallying cry of, "Holy shit, the Durango (probably) requires an internet connection to play games, who else isn't buying this anti-consumer box of evil?!" No one "reported" anything. People took vaguely worded bits here and there and created a narrative out of them.

Irrelevant. They would check every outgoing mail regardless of what's on it. And then open all attachements.
The only think that would work is taking a cell phone picture of the email and mail it from your phone.

Take a picture of the email with your phone and email the pic with a private email on the phone to the Ars. Do not use the company wifi to do this.

Even though this doesn't mean people should actually 'eat crow', since there was a very small amount of people actually guaranteeing it would happen. It's not like it's going to stop many posts about crow eating if it turns out to not be true in the future.

I would assume all code and some specs to be off limits to those who need it. Although, it seems like quite a potential for a lack of cohesive design, not to mention employee disenfranchisement.
The design feature in question does not seem to be one that would be source or spec restricted to need to know. It seems absolutely fundamental, and I would expect something changed to make this control leak necessary.
I guess it also depends on where you are on the totem poll, and what you do.
So glad I already did my time in these type of corporations. I hope to never have go back.

The stuff you mentioned leaked out the week before the unveiling, and it didn't come from Sony employees. You're deluded if you think Sony doesn't lock down their projects as hard as Microsoft, Apple, Samsung etc do. It's a necessity.
Dont even need to do all that, you know. My work place has way more policies, processes and encryption and yet it can all be bypassed ..

Why 1,383? Other than always on, there are really only two or three things that I have a problem with: gold paywall, kinect, and taking the core audience for granted.
If those things were corrected I'd have absolutely nothing to complain about with respect to the Xbox platform. Unfortunately there is probably zero chance of at least two out of those three things changing.
VG Leaks' latest roadmap leak thing mentions that Kinect is not a focus either.

I'm not buying any systems day one either, so I'll wait until real consumers have given feedback on the issue rather than controlled leaks prior to launch that are spun to the company's benefit.

I don't understand. I was just stating a way how MS anti-leak measures could be circumvented.
Plus, I never once claimed it was easy to fool the Ars author. I just said they could have been fooled.

It's a pretty popular opinion on here and it's one I share. They've already raised the price once. What's stopping them from doing it again? It's not a matter of what, it's a matter of why not?
No, it will use HDMI pass thru which requires the cable box to be around. It will just allow the content to be pushed through the system at which point they can overlay new menus and stuff. Should also allow for DVR functionality.
If services like Xbox Music, Netflix and Hulu Plus are all included in a price raised Live subscription (Diamond/Platinum) then you could easily make an argument for it.
Isn't this expected? To be able to turn on the XBox and use it as a disc player or do other basic things without internet?
