Microsoft: Next Xbox will work even when your Internet doesn’t

They can track that too if they wanted too.

You're sure, huh? How sure are you?

Mainly because a lot of the PS4 info leaked out before the conference. The only thing they kept really secretive was the 8 GB bombsell. But the share button, the GDRR5, the controller redesign, etc. were widely discussed before the unveiling. You can rest assured that their first party developers have probably been working together given Sony's history. None of this, "You have to create games while blindfolded, wearing ear plugs, and sending Zodiac letters," from Microsoft.

Because they wanted to believe them?

How about because sites like Edge reported it, and many leaks from other sites included actual documentation from the development kits that seemed to imply an internet connection was required to use the console.

I work for a pretty big company. Not Microsoft big, but few are. I've never seen an email about a project re-iterate rather obvious details like this Microsoft email did today.

So then it's safe to assume you've never worked on a project as big as Durango that is soaked with an NDA.

Why would this e-mail have come out earlier than when MS wanted it to? As soon as they did, look at the results.

Perfect timing if you ask me.

because it is for public consumption and written to quell rumours.

I'm in the camp of this is a controlled leak but it's fairly obvious the nature of public outcry has been about "always online."

Even though the subtext for that outcry is what should matter, it wasn't how the public conveyed their displeasure to the console manufacturers.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they missed or willfully ignored in trying to understand the underlying reasons to hate always online. Blocking used games was just one of many issues to hate it.

I question Edge not because of them starting the rumor but because they posted follow-up articles where they flat out acted like their rumor was the truth. I dont even think they referred to it as a rumor in their follow ups.

Others dont have to see it this way but I really question their credibility because of that.

Fair enough. They were a bit lacking on the disclaimer part. I just don't necessarily agree they should be held to the same standard.

Computer forensics people for MS run EnCase Enterprise across the network searching the hard drives of everyone who got the email with key phrases from the email. They find the Word doc, the pdf and fragments of Gmail email on your work computer.

I hope whoever did it was more careful than that.

How about because sites like Edge reported it, and many leaks from other sites included actual documentation from the development kits that seemed to imply an internet connection was required to use the console.

But here it went from a rumor or multiple rumors to a daily rallying cry of, "Holy shit, the Durango (probably) requires an internet connection to play games, who else isn't buying this anti-consumer box of evil?!" No one "reported" anything. People took vaguely worded bits here and there and created a narrative out of them.

This doesn't even come from microsoft. This is another tale from someone's ass.

You really think if they were leaking internal emails we would still call the damn thing durango?

Irrelevant. They would check every outgoing mail regardless of what's on it. And then open all attachements.

The only think that would work is taking a cell phone picture of the email and mail it from your phone.

Take a picture of the email with your phone and email the pic with a private email on the phone to the Ars. Do not use the company wifi to do this.

Yes, actually I do. This memo was made to be leaked, but they obviously don't want the real name of the system out there

Even though this doesn't mean people should actually 'eat crow', since there was a very small amount of people actually guaranteeing it would happen. It's not like it's going to stop many posts about crow eating if it turns out to not be true in the future.

Microsoft employees work on a need to know basis. I won't be surprised if source code, specs, etc for current project are off limits unless you get access approval.

Considering that they do a lot of enterprise contract work, it's pretty much necessary.

I would assume all code and some specs to be off limits to those who need it. Although, it seems like quite a potential for a lack of cohesive design, not to mention employee disenfranchisement.

The design feature in question does not seem to be one that would be source or spec restricted to need to know. It seems absolutely fundamental, and I would expect something changed to make this control leak necessary.

I guess it also depends on where you are on the totem poll, and what you do.

So glad I already did my time in these type of corporations. I hope to never have go back.

The stuff you mentioned leaked out the week before the unveiling, and it didn't come from Sony employees. You're deluded if you think Sony doesn't lock down their projects as hard as Microsoft, Apple, Samsung etc do. It's a necessity.

Dont even need to do all that, you know. My work place has way more policies, processes and encryption and yet it can all be bypassed ..

Dude, havent you seen Enemy of the State? They can track stuff, I cant say more!

I really can't see that not being true. So once again, thanks to the moron hypberbolists for their outcry.

All my friends employed by MSFT called it as Durango since looongo ago

well that's a relief, finally. One bit of horrible news chipped away from Durango - only 1,383 pieces of abysmal, miserable Durango-related news left to kill until it becomes a desirable system again

I see, you mispelled 1,3 problems, 'cause I can only remember 1 fatal that is No Used Games, the Kinect problems is not really one, so 1,3 problem.

Why 1,383? Other than always on, there are really only two or three things that I have a problem with: gold paywall, kinect, and taking the core audience for granted.

If those things were corrected I'd have absolutely nothing to complain about with respect to the Xbox platform. Unfortunately there is probably zero chance of at least two out of those three things changing.

VG Leaks' latest roadmap leak thing mentions that Kinect is not a focus either.

Frankly I'm tired of all this "will they? won't they?" bullshit about always online DRM.

I'm not buying any systems day one either, so I'll wait until real consumers have given feedback on the issue rather than controlled leaks prior to launch that are spun to the company's benefit.

Give it a shot. See what happens. If Ars is as gullible as you believe, it should be easy to fool the author. :)

I don't understand. I was just stating a way how MS anti-leak measures could be circumvented.

Plus, I never once claimed it was easy to fool the Ars author. I just said they could have been fooled.

Good riddance.

Hyperbole over an announced console!

That is false. Only pictures of the controller came out right before the unveiling.

Bt, what he fuck. Good news? About the new Xbox?

Well that's no fun.

We tried to tell you Microsoft wouldn't be that stupid. But fuck logic right?

:D true ..but i think ppl shouldnt listen to the rumors.....bashing microsoft is an eSport from the success of windows 3.0...in the '90....

they just dosnt care...about some blogger or some click seeker sites.....after day 21 all the media (payed or not) will say "oh dat xbox is fantastic".....u will see.....

It would have come out now because the policy just got changed, and they want the good news dripping out before the conference.

Yes, they did report things. Edge reported things. A lot of other sites reported things. That doesn't mean those things didn't just change because of the reactions those reports got.

"watching live TV" - does this mean the new Xbox is going to be a digital tuner, like can replace a cable box/DVR?

No, it will use HDMI pass thru which requires the cable box to be around. It will just allow the content to be pushed through the system at which point they can overlay new menus and stuff. Should also allow for DVR functionality.

It's a pretty popular opinion on here and it's one I share. They've already raised the price once. What's stopping them from doing it again? It's not a matter of what, it's a matter of why not?

If services like Xbox Music, Netflix and Hulu Plus are all included in a price raised Live subscription (Diamond/Platinum) then you could easily make an argument for it.

Isn't this expected? To be able to turn on the XBox and use it as a disc player or do other basic things without internet?

Microsoft already said that developers would have the option to add always-on internet requirements for their games. This news isn't news at all. It's like saying, "Your electric toothbrush is still a toothbruth even if you don't turn it on."

There's nothing to be surprised at here. This is the bare minimum of what is expected.
