So spoilers obviously, but where is that giant ship from the trailer from?

Obvious Big Spoilers for the film

Major spoilers for the film

Its being built by one of the admirals with the help of khan near Jupiter to prepare for a eventual war against the Klingons

Star Trek (2009) opened 4 years ago today. They should have released STID 9 days earlier and had it open on the same date.

What about "We now have a transporter technology capable of beaming to ships that are hours away at warp speeds, pretty much making faster than light travel by space ship obsolete"?

Minor spoilers for STiD:
People who've seen the film can confirm this or not, but I read somewhere that transporter technology has been advanced to ridiculous levels. To the point where you can teleport between Earth and Qo'nos.

If you were dropped on a random point in North America (a tighter target, surely, than "the same side of the planet"), what would be the odds that the first house you randomly walked into would be inhabited by Leonard Nimoy?

I mean, even a small planet is pretty mindbogglingly huge!
I don't remember if the film addresses this, but I think the obvious answer is that Nero wanted Spock to live as long as possible and therefore dropped him near the Federation base. This makes their meeting more believable, though still somewhat improbable.

The worst part of Star Trek 09's script is the ice planet that's 2 miles from Vulcan. And Kirk stumbling into the exact same cave where Spock is.

Furthermore, Nero's sole reason for sparing Spock's life was so that he could witness the destruction of Vulcan...how did he know that at the moment when Vulcan was destroyed, Spock would be outside of his cave, looking up in the right direction, and that the clouds would part at just the right time on this overcast, snowy world?

Because it's a poorly plotted movie that prefers style over substance? Instead of fleshing out the villain the movie gives us bullshit like kid Kirk being an ass and driving towards a cliff that's somehow in...Iowa.

Even if I could forgive the plot, I can't take JJ Abrams style... shakey-cam, lens flare, the camera swooping and tilting gratuitously, and ADHD editing. No thank you. BTW, I saw JJ Abrams TED talk, he seems like a really nice guy. I just don't like his style of movies.

Which of course raises the question of why is it an ice planet? Vulcan is clearly a barren desert world and this other planet has to be pretty much the same distance from the sun...

I've come to believe a lot of TV and movie sci-fi writers have no concept of the actual structure of the universe and the distances involved. There's just a bunch of stars, planets, galaxies and stuff swirling around out there.

It will depend on how much nitpicks get in the way of things for you. There are some contrivances in this film that will piss off a lot of Trekkies and immediately make them hate this film, but if you can just look at this film as a standalone sequel, then they're easy to overlook in favor of everything else.

I saw it last night, and I really didn't like it. And my only exposure to Star Trek has been the 09 reboot (which I enjoyed a lot). This movie had some bizarre plot issues and I thought the script was pretty weak. Cumberbatch was great but it felt like his potential was wasted with where this film goes. I don't know exactly what it was but nothing really grabbed me in the story.

So does that mean the GAF Rating for this film has plummeted from 100% to 67%? Or did I miss a couple more early opinions here or there?

That... makes a pretty decent amount of sense, even if it's not specifically given as a reason. It's still mindbogglingly unlikely, but now it's more like randomly walking into Nimoy's house when dropped into the same city instead of the same continent. I am partly sated. :D

Just got back from my second viewing. The film holds up really fucking well. Hell, I may have enjoyed it more on rewatch.

Absolute top popcorn entertainment.

Going to see it tonight, really looking forward to it.

I've only watched 1 or 2 trailers so going in fairly blind.

Yep that does indeed happen and its not Qo'noS anymore its spelt Kronos in the film

Just got back from watching this. I loved it. I found it better than the first film. Benedict was awesome as usual.

The only disappointing thing about it was the World War Z trailer they played.

So jealous that we have to wait 6 more days to see this! Going to the Wednesday night showing and I can't be more excited.

Anybody see it in IMAX, if so, how was the IMax shot footage? Worth it?

I have to say that on my second watch (*spoilers*)
I started bawling like a fucking baby when Scotty says 'You better get down here..' and the music cuts out and you just see Spock bolting through the ship with purpose, because he already senses what has happened.

So is the 3D worth it?

Given the importance of colour in these films I'm thinking I'll go 2D then maybe 3D if I want to see it again.

So is the 3D worth it?

It's inoffensive, but pretty much adds nothing. Though if you can only see this movie on a big screen by getting reamed on the 3D, I say take the 3D. You have to see this movie on a big screen. If you have a good theatre, it's still plenty colourful.

Just got back from my screening. It was decent, in my opinion. A solid 8 out of 10.

Khans blood to revive Kirk, unless I'm brain farting and they used the same method in the original movies, screamed deus ex machina to me. It didn't bother me hugely, but there were better ways they could have done it.

The role reversal with Kirk and Spock in the warp drive core was cleverly done, although Spock yelling Khans name felt a little forced, like they were intentionally trying to pander to the fans.

Apart from that though, very good movie. Lived up to 2009.

Just got home from seeing it in 3D, fantastic movie, great story and great action.

I do wish they were more ballsy and kept Kirk dead, mirroring Wrath Of Khan. Did love the duality of it all and how everything mirrored the classic universe sans goatees.

Will be interesting to see where they go with this universe now. Funny enough, Into Darkness has got me excited to see what Abrams is going to do with Star Wars Episode 7.

Loved the gratuitous Alice Eve in bra and panties shot, thanks J.J!

Oh yeah, I mean, I'm sure he's a nice guy. He just doesn't know how to direct a decent Star Trek movie.

Well that's dumb.

If I can accept Luke crash-landing conveniently next to Yoda, I can accept Kirk finding OG Spock. Its you really want an answer its probably force-balancing universe correcting itself mumbo jumbo.

Except for, ya know, Luke having an actual destination and not being marooned randomly on some planet.

Both movies feature huge coincidences.

Both franchises have JJ Abrams at the helm.

They exist in the same universe confirmed.

Except that Luke crash-landed on Degobah and had no idea where to find Yoda. All he knew was that he had to go to the Degobah system.

Force did it.

You're really going to try and argue that they are remotely similar situations? Really?

Oh and not only was Spock on this planet in Star Trek, but so was Scotty and wouldn't you know Scotty has discovered a way to teleport back to the ship!!!

It's destiny. Orci / Kurtzmann did an interview about it way back:

AK: It's funny you ask about time travel and the idea that time sorts itself out. There was a line that we had written that was shot which ended up getting cut from the movie. Watching it the other day, I wish we'd kept. When Kirk and Spock Prime are in the cave and Spock's telling him everything, there's a mention by Kirk of "How is it that I found you in this cave in the middle of an ice planet? It's insane that we should ever even meet this way." Spock says, "Perhaps it's the timestream's way of trying to mend itself. It is fate and destiny trying to bring us together."

RO: We're using the rules of quantum mechanics for time travel on this one, as opposed to the classical Einsteinian rules of relativity. One of the subsets of that theory is that there are multiple universes and that the things that are most probable to happen, happen most often in more universes... So there's more universes out there where Kirk and Spock get together and hang out than not, just because that's what quantum mechanics would say. We were very much playing as much as we could with the latest theories, and trying to tie those into a real sense of destiny. The movie does rely, to some extent for the fans, on a real knowledge of the fact that everyone is going to end up in their proper place.

LOL it's the story of how Kirk and Scotty first meet in this universe. How is that a plot hole?

Kirk's pod is dropped off there specifically because its near a Star Fleet outpost.

Starfleet is one word.
IDK why they try to use science words when they actually just want to say that it's fate and clearly don't understand the physics.

It's Orzi and Kurtzman!

Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, The Undiscovered Country, and First Contact are all fun, watchable movies.

But Kirk didn't know that, old Spock had to tell him, "There is a Starfleet outpost, not far from here."

When young Spock dropped him there did he intend for Kirk to wander around blindly in a blizzard until he (maybe) found the outpost?

Kirk's escape pod specifically tells him there's a Starfleet outpost 14km to the northwest

I don't really have a problem with this, language has always been a bit odd in Star Trek. Names especially like the Romulans, Romulas and Remus have never jived well with me because those are words that are from our history not theirs. Even some of the novels use some Romulan word from their home planet that isn't Romulas and is in their language.

I would say the same for
Qo'noS, it is in Klingon, and to me makes sense that we would probably call it Kronos seeing as that is apparently it's translated name, and according to the wiki it was originally going to be called Kronos till they changed it to fit with the Klingon language which is why we ended up with Qo'noS.

Just saw it. One of the dumbest most predictable movies i have ever seen... loved every minute of it. Best thing Abrams has ever done. Seeing it again tomorrow.
