Retro Studios and the next step

I've said it before and I'll say it again; you guys out way too much faith in Retro. Metroid Prime was a great game, but 2 and 3 couldn't have been that hard to do after establishing the first. There's DKCR, which I haven't played, but I hear is good. Basically, they got 2 games going for them. I don't really expect them to do something incredible.
Have you played MP2/3? Its not like NSMB or CoD copy pasta assets. MP2 and 3 changed a fair amount and had impeccable level design that not many studios could replicate. DKCR is also one of the most refreshing platformers in years.

This is the worst downplaying of a studio I've seen in a long time, if not ever. The sequels couldn't have been 2 hard because the first was good? Does this have any basis in reality? Anyone here could come up with a list of games that dropped off significantly in subsequent sequels! The fact is Retro has yet to produce a game that hasn't been critically acclaimed. Their lowest rated game is DKCR which still has around an 88% on GR

I meant like establishing a combination of a Metroid and an FPS, the basic foundation for the sequels was laid out. I'm not saying it was worse (where did you get that from?), but it's a lot easier the second and third time around.

I know people get upset at the praise Retro gets and naturally some want to denounce or poop on the party because they want to go against the grain and be different(the "overrated" annoyance they perceive) but you not playing one of the games that solidified Retro's consistent standard of talent(a different genre, also showing their flexibility as designers) doesn't give you much of a basis.

Is it too early to crown them one of the best developers out there???

Perhaps.

But like has been stated, none of their games are even average(the worst is "good") and a few of them are some of the best games in a long time(possibly ever) in their respective genres according to many(critics and fans alike).

I think you are also ignoring the talent they hired from other studios lately.

These individuals have proven track records and have had success in their own right.

Retro also knows that by now, all eyes are on them so they have pressure; they almost HAVE to come through with the real deal.

Their new game might not sell the most but it should be one of the best first party games for Nintendo easily.

I could see them working on an original FPS game. Nintendo said they wanted to launch with a big AAA FPS and apparently Retro pulled out of E3 last minute last year.

Sorry, I had no idea that by not agreeing with the hive mind I was trying to be "different".

And I've actually played Metroid Prime 1 and 3. Where did I say I haven't played one of their games?

Some people seem to make Retro out to be the second coming of Jesus. After only a couple games I'm sorry I don't believe them to be all that great. At least not yet.

If they can do well, then good for them. I'm just not going to get as hyped as some of you guys.

You haven't played Donkey Kong Country Returns, I thought I made it clear that that was the game that solidified their consistent and versatile standard as it's a different genre.

Since they haven't made a ton of games, I would say that game is a big reason people don't think they are some fluke or one dimensional developer.

It's a pretty obvious point.

Ok?? Theres a first for everything. I bet if we knew they were working on dkcr people would of flipped tables. They didnt make side scrolling platformers before.

It's just silly of you to claim that Retro has only made two good games. They've made four critically acclaimed games. They've only made four games. In other words, 100% of the games they developed were almost unanimously well-received. It's not hard to understand why everyone is excited to hear about their next game.

I do believe that we have built them up to a point where they can easily disappoint, however.

It's funny that everyone bags on Nintendo and wants them to develop new first-party IPs, yet everyone seemingly wants Retro to make DK, Starfox, or Metroid.

Make a new IP please. Retro is the perfect studio to do so.

there are more new IPs then i can handle nowadays. i'd rather them work on some legacy nintendo stuff or even pick up rights to third-party games to work on (mega man/sanic)

I'm pretty sure Nintendo at this point know what kind of name Retro is among both hardcore gamers and the press (remember Reggies introduction of Retro when revealing DKCR in 2010?), and therefore pretty confident that they are not using them for Pokemon, Mario Kart or anything of the sort.

I think they are definitely working on something to wow western gamers. Something like Metroid Prime, however, I dont think its a Prime-game as that could easy be disregarded as just another sequel. It might be a Metroid-game though, but done in a different style than Prime, maybe in third-person?

Anyways, I'm pretty sure the game will be great and satisfy me - and continue Retro's tradition of high praise but not so high sales :(

Sorry, I had no idea that by not agreeing with the hive mind I was trying to be "different".

That will get you far...

I love each and every game (like MP3) that Retro has made. I'm not praising them because others are, I feel they deserve recognition for the games they had made.

Some people seem to make Retro out to be the second coming of Jesus. After only a couple games I'm sorry I don't believe them to be all that great. At least not yet.

No, you're perceiving it that way. The ones who are praising Retro are excited to see what they will do next. They haven't made a bad game yet, so one would expect them to do something great.

If they can do well, then good for them. I'm just not going to get as hyped as some of you guys.

That's fine, you can have your opinion.

Ok. So in your opinion what would be a good developer that would merit excitement?
I don't see how you can dispute that, in spite of them not being your personal coup of tea, every last game released by this studio had been critically acclaimed. Hence the anticipation.

I don't care, you're right, I'm wrong. Please don't kill me.

Well, if you're just stating your opinion that Retro is not a top tier studio: Noted. We hear you, and most of us disagree.

But this is a studio who is widely considered to have released four straight great games, one of which is considered one of the best games of the last 12 years. So yeah, of course we're hyped.

Having played Metroid Prime 1 (one of the best games of all time) and 2 and DKC Returns (also Mario Kart 7...), I have to say they are a very good developer, but I have to agree with him; Retro is not top tier and is definitely overhyped.

I mean, the studio is inconsistent; they had A LOT of trouble developing the first MP, canceling five other games they had planned, then they had a calm time making MP2 and MP3; after 3, they vanished for a time, releasing the MP trilogy and probably helping in other Nintendo games.

In that time, most of the staff left, so we can't say that this is the same Retro that made MP1 (which is a master piece).

DKC Returns is a great game, definitely the best platformer of the generation, much better than Rayman for instance, but IMO the game was lacking in production values, that the Prime games had in abundance.

It's clear to me that the team making DKC and MK7 was a smaller one and Retro had less resources.

I'm very excited for their next game, but I'm in no way expecting something of Uncharted magnitude; Retro is not Naughty Dogs and is no Bungie, and they are fine that way.

I still think it's weird that they did Mario Kart 7.

I hope it's Donkey Kong! =)

Not necessarily the country series, maybe a 3D platafformer adventure?

Just don't bring an FPS please!

As always I want a new thing, I don't even want to hear about metroid, they made games since the game cube and high quality ones at that, it would be really pushing the limits to not be able to finally try to establish an original world.
