Steam Trading Cards : get trading cards and turn it into stuff

I haven't bought anything on Steam in over a year so I'm not eligible to sell stuff on the Marketplace. Can I buy something from the Marketplace like a TF2 crate to fix that, or does it have to be an actual game or DLC?

~$5 for the don't starve emoticon.

How do you use emoticons anyway? I crafted a HL2 pack and now have a G man emoticon but I can't figure out how to use it :\

The background I realized I have to set in my profile settings but the emoticon only gives me the option to sell it if I click on it in my inventory and I see nothing in the settings to enable it, doesn't show up in my chat window automatically.

Is it level restricted or something? Just hit lvl 10 so was hoping that'd solve it but nawp

Ah thanks, I was kinda thrown off by the steam website showing an emoticon dropdown menu, guess that's not implemented yet.

This seems pretty cool. Now it is time to beg and see if they will allow us to add La-Mulana to this and hope they don't shoot us down!

After buying a card from TF2, and Dota 2, both games have 'no drops remaining' showing in the badges section

What's up?

Don't Starve cards are probably the less risky ones to buy since they're only 5 pieces. I'm about to get another set to upgrade my badge with the emoticon money. Just need a cheaper Wolfgang one, I was lucky to buy one before for $1.50

The Don't Starve emoticons/backgrounds don't seem to be in demand though (at least not the ones I got!)

The lack of dissent to this new thing is troubling. Shit like this is why I stopped playing TF2, so now you're going to have people buying games JUST for the achievements, cards, and xp to expand their epeen profile. This doesn't bother anyone else?

It's cosmetic, so no.

You don't want developers to make money or something?

No because it's completely unnecessary to participate.

You're just jealous of my e-penis. It's huge. I have the golden pillar of community badge.

Just managed to sell 3 beta invites for 1.50€ a piece when they were going for 0.10€ a piece yesterday. Free money, baby, free money.

I've got an extra Sniper and Gordon & Alyx. I'm willing to trade for a Maxwell or a Wilson. Hit me up if you're interested!

IIRC, Toma mentioned in this thread that the Don't Starve badge maxes out at lv 4.

Oh god I didn't even realize you can upgrade the badges. I hope there's a weekly/monthly reset or something because I'm not gonna bother working the market to trade for the same cards over and over

Looks like F2P games will require in game purchases to reset the drop count.

Not receiving game card drops in Dota 2 or Team Fortress 2

Because Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 are free to play games, they use a slightly different mechanism for dropping cards. In order to receive card drops for these games, you must have made an in-game purchase at some point (or, in the case of Team Fortress 2, owned the game prior to the Free to Play release). Future in-game purchases will result in more card drops. You can see how many card drops you have remaining on your badges page. UPDATE: this does not seem to be granting drops properly right now (but we are tracking purchases). Hopefully we can resolve the issue by tomorrow.

The increasing focus on extrinsic rewards is starting to bug me. But, at least these things will never be mandatory, like they are on consoles.

Still, I do worry that systems like these create some sort of expectation for games to be big bags of features, rather than finely crafted products. If they become popular, that is.

You stopped playing TF2 because they added a bunch of free stuff?

Okay.
