Star Trek into Darkness |OT| Not very tired at all

Just got back.

FUN AS HELL to watch.

And the reveal, I already knew, but it was still quite enjoyable to hear and see it.

Really really enjoyed the movie! It is close to the perfect summer movie. Is it a great Star Trek film, I still think it has enough ST DNA somewhere in there to enjoy it, certainly the characters are great. That said its not a smart movie and I wouldn't say its the best Star Trek film.

Major spoilers

I watched Khan before watching this movie to refresh the history and lore. I love all the alternate dimension aspects to the story. Seeing an alternate version of Khan was great but at the same time it doesn't allow this movie to be it's own thing. When you compare the two directly Wrath of Khan is a more compelling film.

That is about all the negativity I have for the film. As a summer flick, amazing. It has some action sequences that were just breathtaking. I am super excited for Star Wars.

Can't wait to see it on Friday! I just wish Toronto had more 2D high quality screenings. Correction, ANY 2D high quality screenings.

I loved the first, but man, this one did not do it for me. I fear this will be this year's Tron: Legacy, in which my friends incessantly tell me "can't you just have fun?"

First half was not bad, pretty much a slightly less good version of the first, but it just goes off the rails. Scattered, dumb, and worst of all, lazy. Spoilers:
Everything involving Kahn and all the moments they replay a mirror version of... what the hell. "You liked this stuff before? Here, have it again!" Why can't they just do their own fucking thing? This franchise has no future if they insist on using its past as a crutch.

The first transcended its weak script, this one buckled under it.

Still, some solid, fun action beats, though not anything that matched the first. Cumberbatch was pretty sweet too, I just wish his character was given more than one note to hit.

Got my tickets for Friday. I'm ready to lust over Chris Pine.

Or maybe you're just being unreasonably critical and/or have poor taste? Because if pretty lights and explosions are all it takes for critical acclaim, Transformers, along with the billion other critically lambasted high octane blockbuster action films out there, want words.

Just because it is more cohesive than transformers doesn't mean it is good. That is an awfully low bar you are setting there.

Soooo I kind of feel like people are overselling this film. I didn't think it was "amazing" by any definition of the word.

It dragged a bit in spots, and could have used a few more locations. It's also very predictable, and most of the dialogue is average at best.

Still, it was pretty engaging and entertaining enough. Effects were good, and I'm keen to see Abrams take on Star Wars.

Also, guy needs to tone down on the bloody lens flares.

Didn't you hear? If you don't think it's amazing you have shit taste.

I watched it on UltraAVX 3D. I'm watching it again on Friday, and I think my friends and I are going for the regular 2D version for that.

Yeah enjoyed it too, although not as good as the first.

Major spoilers:
Agree with all the comments about them needing to do their own thing at this point. They appeased the fanboys with Khan and as much as I love Nimoy, I don't want to see him anymore. They need to carve their own identity especially since there was too much similar (2 disabled ships at a stalemate, death via irradiation, and even the space jump was kinda the same as the first one, just with crap in the way and horizontal) where at a point it stopped being homage and "history repeating itself in a slightly different way" so much as lazy nostalgia milking.

But yeah, I did like it, and out of all the popcorn flicks I've seen so far this year, probably the most entertaining.

Now I'm going to go lie down and forget about the massive amounts of bacon popcorn I ate during this showing...

Edit: Oh and (spoilers)
This woman was sobbing hysterically a couple seats down during the whole Kirk/Spock glass scene. I think our entire row was kinda glancing at her and going "did you forget about the clearly set up Khan blood/tribble scene"?

Yeah I'll be seeing the Ultraavx 3D screening Friday night too. I'll prob see it again next week with my girlfriend. I'm pretty excited

Need more 3D opinions if you guys got them.

Ummm boobs look good in 3D :P

It was only alright I thought. As usual, sparks and other particle effects are the most convincing part of the 3D. Besides that, it was all a bit too obvious. Just foreground and background most of the time, with no inbetween. Far from the worst I've seen though!

The blood had no effect on the tissue sample up until after that point, so there's no way she could have known it would work beyond just guess work or plausible assumption.

They had already established Khan's Wolverine-like healing and it's a pretty safe assumption that in sci-fi science, that it'd happen. Plus the scene is so completely removed from EVERYTHING else that's going on that it's clearly a "set-up" scene with no other purpose then to serve as a convenient plot-point reminder.

I think I liked it more than ST09. One thing I wish they changed was within the first 10 mins. Posting from phone but ill just say that it involves the hospital scene.

WoK still the best.

Caught the film on Imax 3D; looked stunning. 3D was really good too.

And I think k I saw Rosario Dawson and I wouldn't be surprised if the Observer from Fringe was in too

On the other hand, his blood causing somebody else to regenerate makes no goddamn sense.

Opening scene says hello. Combined with injecting blood into dead animal, you have to be pretty obtuse to not see it coming.

On the other hand, his blood causing somebody else to regenerate makes no goddamn sense.

LOL, there is that.

Edit: Added tags just in case.

A lot of people are getting hung up on this.
The point wasn't whether Kirk was going to be eventually revived or not, the point was the moment Spock and Kirk share as Kirk is dieing. Kirk coming back doesn't ruin that scene.

Just saw the film. Really entertaining! Cumberbatch was good as his character, and overall
I would say that the film is up to par with the first one!

Two Thumbs up!

Even though it was painfully obvious they were going to bring him back, I still think the Kirk death stuff was well handled and resonated well. At not point did I actually fear for his life, and as soon as they mentioned his bloods amazing regenerative power you just knew they were going to use it on someone.

Went to the 8pm showing in true IMAX, loved the fuck out of this movie. Theater was packed too and I got my sweet poster.

Takes a massive dump all over ST09 and I adored that movie but STID is superior overall. Soundtrack was even better too, and again, I loved that one as well.

Cumberbatch is the deal, just in case no one's noticed him in the equally awesome Sherlock, but he totally stole the show.

Already have plans to watch this again on Friday night & on Saturday night.

Also, for post-conversion 3D, it was excellent but do go for IMAX if you can - those specific scenes are amazing.

Got some last minute seats to a 9pm 'sneak peek' 3D showing - fantastic movie. I'm sure IMAX makes this movie shine, but my little XD cinema was superb as a substitute for the wait until the weekend.

Loved it.

The only thing that jarred me out of it for a brief moment was
Scotty stunning Cumberbatch with one shot in space, and then when they were capturing him at the end Uhura having to fan the trigger to shoot him down.

Minor quibble. Was great fun.

I'd like to think that Scotty had his phaser set to kill (I saw red lights...I think?), which packs a bit more punch than stun. On the other hand, he did open his eyes pretty quickly after dropping.

So I definitely liked the movie, I think overall it was slightly better than the first one to me. I really think they could benefit from an overarching story line though over multiple movies because I was dying to see more of the villain by the end of of the movie and a more epic plotline in general.

Got back from watching it and it was fucking amazing. I've never watched Star Trek (how much did I really "miss" by just watching the movie?) and but I thought it was great!

The introduction to Khan was awesome and the KHAAAAAAAAN-part was crazy good too!

Saw it in IMAX 3D.

random thoughts

knowing close to nothing about star trak it was
still pretty fun. liked the movie and recommend it if you like blockbusters i guess.(seems better than the average blockbuster) i'll start with my major complaint though which is jj abrams taking the fuck advantage of every light in the enterprise to have a lense flare in half the damn shots. and all the lights are blue which causes blue lens flares which then look like a blue filter on the movie lol. BUT i do love that half the film is in the enterprise. story was just decent. i always think faux death scenes in blockbusters is just fucking bad writing no matter what. i do love jj abrams 'outer space' though. his planets are always very neat and have nice color paletts. the tribal species race was great. khan raped dem klingons. 3D and IMAX was great. it wasn't dark at all so the 3D came across nicely. someone threwup in the front row during the movie. one of my contacts dried up and popped up because the strain on em. alice eve can get it.

Oh, and the scene where
Khan reveils himself as Khan
was kinda ruined by the people in the cinema ._. Still very good scene!

:lol My girlfriend kept saying either Star Wars or Star Trak during the movie. She also asked who Star Trak was in the movie (thinking it would be like Super Man, Spider Man etc).
