Nintendo Direct 5/17 4PM CEST, 7AM PST, focus on First Party Wii U Summer Titles

I don't think this ND will be the hype one, but the next one surely will be. Consider this a warmup to the happenings, GAF.

So I just realized something

this nintendo direct for wii u is essentially last year's E3 again for Wii U in terms of games

minus twenty minutes of batman (maybe)

Nintendo give me that summer bomb please!

Other third party's seem to be fine with Wii U, EA is the only main one with the problem.

EA has reduced their output to AAA only. They are releasing 12 games this year. Wii U doesn't fit in because the gamble they would have to take to get Wii U running Frostbite and those games doesn't fit their new corporate philosophy. It's just what happens when you're company is financially struggling. EA made a lot of gambles that didn't pay off.

I understand why EA made the decision they did. Nintendo has to do something to rescue the Wii U, and do it quickly.

What happens if the PS4/720 don't sell well? Will EA just drop support.

If EA is really suffering financially than they might have big problems later onto the generation, and wouldn't AAA only hurt them more since AAA games have higher dev costs, etc?

And it's pretty much a fact that the Wii U could handle Frostbite, it's just EA didn't care for it on Wii U.

I've thoroughly given up on Wii U achieving any kind of sales success or broad third party support.

It's on Nintendo now.

It's always been on Nintendo though. They failed third parties by not having competent development tools until after launch. It's not hard to realize why the support wouldn't be there at this point.

What I find funny is that we got tons of bad news for Nintendo, then they announce a ND and everyone is hyped and happy, then BAM more bad news.
It's like they just want to kill any hype we could get about the Wii U.

That EA "unprecetented partnership" don't affect me though, I upgraded my PC 3 months ago and can still get any EA games that could interest me.

Other third party's seem to be fine with Wii U, EA is the only main one with the problem.

Square Enix, Capcom, TecmoKoei, Namco, Take 2, and Bethesda don't seem to be filled with confidence either. Same holds true for B publishers such as DeepSilver.

Support only seems to be coming from Activision, WBIE, Ubisoft, and Disney. And even that is limited and definitely reconsidered after the current sales.

I never said it was impossible. I just said the resources it would take don't align with their recent penny pinching.

I think a lot of gaming companies will have financial troubles later in this generation. If you look at what Square Enix, Activision, and EA are doing, they are scaling back and only investing in blockbuster AAA franchises. If PS4/720 don't take off like Saturn V rockets, they'll be in huge trouble.

I think where Wii U could find it's success is Nintendo publishing games for smaller developers, funding indie projects, and keeping a steady stream of first party games coming out.

My theory is, Nintendo and even Sony are seeing the current AAA Third Parties in trouble, so they big time support indies and in the future indies might be the next gen AAA companies because they will get bigger, have more money, etc.

If my theory is correct we will be going back into the Video Game Crash and it will start up again.

Ubisoft is big, and I didn't even mention any companies.
Ubisoft is big, yes. One company is not emblematic of third party success.
They are a good start. From the looks of it, Activision is still on board at least for the near term.

You say start as if Wii U is going to build up third party relationships. Not bloody likely. Where's Destiny again?

The console is getting the bare minimum. Hell, without EA on board it isn't even getting that. I can't believe people are still sticking their heads in the sand over the situation.

If you think Nintendo is betting on a video game crash, you're crazy. To pretend their woeful inadequacy at convincing people to develop for their system is actually a plot to survive the apocalypse is pure and utter delusion.

Huh?

Capcom has 3 games coming to Wii U, Tecmo Koei has already released 3, and Namco released TTT and are helping with Smash.

Square Enix doesn't have anything yet, but I suspect that they have some projects cooking for the system as well. As far as the other studios that would be nice to have their support, but we'll see how sales come along once Nintendo starts to get their games out at a regular pace.

I never said Nintendo is betting on a video game crash, I said Nintendo and Sony are thinking something similar to it might happen and they have to make actions now.

Source for Capcom games? Didn't they recently state they canceled a handful of unannounced titles? Also the rest seems pretty poor. Smash isn't a third party game.

Good man. You're one of the few with good sense in this thread. Why not have the best of both worlds?

I think 2 of those 3 games are the Ducktales remake and the D&D Arcade fighting game. The third is RE:Revelations?

Weak support from Capcom, but they haven shown much for PS4/NextBox either.

You can do that while still having makers of incredibly popular video games NOW on your system.

Nintendo and Sony appealing to the indies is all very nice and noble, but it's not a replacement for EA.

The third party situation is bad. I think it can improve if Nintendo moves some consoles with their first party output and starts securing some exclusives through financial partnerships. Clearly you don't think it will ever improve, so what point are you trying to make?

My comment about the video game industry was a point that a lot of industry people have acknowledged, and their conclusion is that gamers are starving for Next Gen and will jump on it ravenously. Given the state of the world economically, and that conservative estimates put the new consoles at or above the $400 mark, I think that might be a bit overzealous. I never said Nintendo was planning for it.

I know that, Nintendo will probably feel the heat and do anything they can to get on EA's good side again, it just sucks that this had to happen between Nintendo and EA.

The point I'm trying to make is that Nintendo have fucked up. Massively.

Some people in this very thread are denying that there's any problem between Nintendo and third parties, and I find the very concept baffling.

I don't deny this may well be right.

Doesn't retroactively prevent Wii U from being a failure in its own terms.

And now we are looking at their upcoming titles.

Tecmo Koei is not bringing DoA 5: Ultimate. Can't find any other games from them either.
Capcom has Resident Evil: Revelations. But after that? No Lost Planet 3, no Dragon's Dogma, no Remember Me.
What about Namco? Smash is funded by Nintendo and a first party game. I don't see any other games developed by them for Wii U for the future.

EA might be the worst, but the support of other third parties is not looking well either. It's not as if the all next-generation games will see downports for Wii U. Be prepared for the upcoming E3 :/
