The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

There's a Chicago Shmupmeet? Did I miss it? I would kill for a chance to show off my completely lackluster shmuppy skills with other like-minded individuals in this area!
it's only open to active shmups forums users, but no it hasn't happened yet.

also, fantastic news that SDOJ will be region-free for all those who don't own J360s.

Hell with it. I was looking at amiami this morning and suddenly the regular edition preorders are sold out, but the regular edition with the amiami book card is not. Ordered it as $10 more doesn't really bug me.

As an aside, I love the translations of the tweet announcing the regionless:

Twitter translation uses Bing:
Xbox 360 mad Don bee maximum death can be playing in body foreign!

Google Translate:
DonPachi maximum death and anger The Xbox 360 ♪ that can have you playing in the main body of overseas

machine translate stay godlike LOL

Damn, exactly the version I bought, but it was normally available when I placed the order. Hopefully nothing goes wrong with it.

After spending a half dozen hours on Maximum over the last few days I finally busted through 30 Billion and am clawing my way back up the leaderboard. Back up to 56!

Precious little about strategy on the web about this game. Even looking at the french forum I can not really find anything.

With some strategic suiciding for rapid refresh of bomb in two section where the red turrets come together in a circle I've been able to ramp up my score in 5C-D-E. I chose the two points where the turrets come together in a circle and just live in there to till I suicide and quickly bomb again. Guessing I'm achieving 1.5 more bombs in the sequence. Still a few billion off from per level compared to the top fifty :-(

I never understood the concept of a superplay but I'd really like one for this game.

Also, playing Ibara this morning. Having a much better time with type D. Learning to use the Hadou Cannon!

Sigh-Die-Oh-Joe I think

Is the Cave Shooting Collection extremely limited/out of print.

Edit: Oh wow lol used the same common words

One question if some cave gamers can help me on it.
I love shmups and i only have bug princess 1, and dodonpachi resurrection HD for my ipad.

Am i missing some cave shmup better than these two, on the ipad?

I also have danmaku unlimited 2, not a cave game i know, and it was pretty cool. xP

Get Dodonpachi Maximum for iPad. Easily the best of their games for iOS. Lots of unlockables, many individual levels, each with their own leaderboard as well as an over-arcing and additive leaderboard, some of the best re-mixes, a special ridiculously difficult secret level that mashes up a lot of fan-service.

Bug Princess 2 and Maximum are my favorites. BP2 is very similar to one, but I think the grazing mechanic works so well with touch that it's significantly better than BP1.

Might give a shot to those 2. I didn't like very much the "virtual look" of the enemies on Maximum. At least what i saw from the trailer. But if it has a lot of cool stuff it might be a good value.

Your milage may vary but I've gotten about fifty hours out of it and still have A LOT to accomplish. Graphic style is intense...photos do not do it justice. It is (relatively) expensive but well worth it.

It's kind of jarring going back to the regular games after Maximum cause everything is so much bigger and easier to see on the small screen vs the ports. The only knock I have on Maximum is that it runs at 30fps or so vs the 60 of the ports. It's not a huge deal in practice but it was disappointing compared to the fluidity of the others.

Another one to consider is Espgaluda II. Gameplay doesn't transfer as well cause the stuff you gotta do on the buttons to score well (kind of a pain without real buttons), but it's just as solid of a port as the others. There's a special touch gameplay mode that some people like, but I just stuck with the arcade one and saved a few bucks there.

At first, I wasn't a big fan of the graphic style either, but you'll get used to it. But the gameplay is really good and there's a lot of stuff to be accomplished. Should keep you busy for a while.

Certainly the cheapest if anything. I don't know how fast they fulfill if you are only just now ordering; they are among the fastest for long standing preorders.
i've had good experiences with amiami's shipping speed so price was the only concern seems like the best option

Right now what are the best bullet hell games on android? Iphone is pretty meh but I'd like to get a droid device later on. I'd hate to go iphone just out of love for cave.

So... I pre-ordererd DDP SDOJ on xbox360, but I really want it on iOS... :/
why? would you actually prefer it on iOS?

In my eyes the console version is superior to every iOS version. Especially since you can use an arcade stick and play it the way it's meant to be played.

I think only Dodonpachi Ressurection and Espgaluda II are on Android from Cave. I'd recommend DDPRes first, then ESP2.

Honestly, Cave is the reason I'm sticking iOS when I upgrade my phone :D

Android also has a nice port of the Raiden Fighters collection. They're not exactly bullet hell games, but still excellent shmups. The pixel art in Raiden games on a tablet screen is amazing, especially the explosions.

I pre-ordered the SDOJ LE with yesasia.com - is anyone familiar with this company? I'm more than a little worried, as I didn't even get a confirmation email.

YesAsia is legit, I used them quite a bit back in the day. I'd double check your account page, they are good about confirmations and general communication. Check your spam folder maybe? Their confirmations come from noreply-us@yesasia.com

I finally joined the 21st century and replaced my Sony Ericcson W200 with an iPhone (4, it was on sale). Now I want to get me some Dodonpachi action and noticed Cave tends to do sales for their games quite often, but I missed the last sale by a couple of weeks. When is the next sale estimated to start?

Ipod Touch is a good option for folks who don't want to use the actual iPhone. Between all the Cave games and the few extra shooters it makes a fairly inexpensive device. Single cost of $300 gets you a Cave-playing device. Just treat it as a handheld like a 3DS or Vita.

The iPhone 4 is nearly three years old, and as such has the performance difficulties you'd expect from obsolete hardware. I hope you can return it and get something better. Even the 4S would be a significant step up but even that has issues running current games.

Figures. I've also found that Gmail has been getting pretty dumb when it comes to spam lately. It will allow say a mass mailing from a legit company like buy.com let's say for years, and suddenly flag one as spam every once in a while. Nothing important has been lost yet, but I don't appreciate the randomness.

Yup. I just checked my spam folder for fun, and found stuff from rakuten (buy.com), play-asia, newegg, and jim guthrie (composer on Sword & Sworcery) randomly in there. Damnit Google!

It's the cheapest?

AmiAmi has it listed for 11,260yen which is $109 according to xe.com.

PlayAsia has it for $67.90?

Edit: That's for delux edition. Regular edition is 5,980 yen, my bad

What's the usual shipping for a game from AmiAmi? I ended up canceling from them (...after a few back and forth emails cause their no cancel policy) cause I wasn't sure how much it'd end up costing, they don't give a shipping price until they get the items in.

usually normal EMS prices

DDP:Resurrection was a really slow burn for me - not sure why, but I think when I got the game, I was done with Cave shooters in general.

Just picked it up the other day and 1cc'd Novice 360 mode and I'm really hooked. I decided to start replaying Cave games recently because of the upcoming Sai - and I'm really glad I gave DDP:Resurrection another go.

Absolutely loving the game now - the different mode are pretty awesome and I can't believe I waited this long to give it a chance. It's ranking up there with Akai Katana and Ibara as my current favorites!

I picked up Resurrection in anticipation of Saidaioujou too. I've never played it seriously for score or anything, but did steadily 1cc the normal xbox 360 mode last year. Now I have to use 2 credits every time. But there's still time to brush up my skills, since I plan to play it at least once every day (usually the first thing I do in the morning :D) until Saidaioujou arrives.

I'm just now getting around to calibrating the Cave Shooting Collection for my monitor, and I'm having an issue with Deathsmiles. I installed the DLC disc, so the Mega Black Label content does show up, but I cannot access all of it. MBL arcade and 360 play fine, but if I try to boot MBL 1.1, it takes me to an empty store screen.

It mentions Xbox Live, do I need to be connected to the Japanese XBL just to access this mode (I use the NA store on a JP console)? If so, is it a one-time activation, or a sort of always-online thing? I notice the "Xbox LIVE" menu on the main screen is greyed out as well.

MBL1.1 requires a title update to work, that's all there is to it.

Weird, I can download other title updates from the NA store just fine. Thanks though, looks like I'll whip up a quick JP account and try again. Hopefully that update gets archived, it'll be a pain once XBL for the 360 is discontinued.

Edit 2: Fixed! For people who own the Cave Shooting Collection, know that the DLC disc is bugged. Do NOT just do an "install all", because it won't actually do it. It seems to have a low install limit, so press Y to uncheck everything, then manually install 5 items at a time until you've gone through it all. Should install 1.7GB to the Game folder, and 1.87GB total in all folders. Doing the "install all" only moved about 1GB.

Still can't connect Deathsmiles to Xbox Live (did they pull it?), but I can play MBL 1.1 now.

Yeah, I wanted at least a 4S but I wasn't able to afford it. I tried the demo of Daioujou and it runs well, though. Hopefully it won't take me too long to upgrade.

You should be good on most of the games. My older iPod touch is the equivalent of the 4 and it handles most titles. Not 100% but enough. My 4S has no issues whatsoever with any of the games at all.

So like... question:

I have a buncha Cave games on the 360. Is there any reason to prefer having the collection that came out a couple months ago over the standalone releases? I dunno if they include DLC on the disc or something, but if there are any differences between the games in the collection and the original releases, I wanna know what they are. Don't care about the soundtracks or whatever other noise happens to be in the box.

Besides the DLC being a disc install and having different art on the disc there's no difference from the original releases. From a gameplay standpoint the only reason to trade up would be if you missed the first press-only DLC the first time (e.g. Full voice in Deathsmiles, Futari v1.01, DFK v1.51, Pork Matsuri ver., etc.) as this is now the only means that content is available to new purchasers.

Yeah,

Just overkill, the collection. Nothing new at all if you already have the first-press bonuses. Install disc is a great convenience, though. I know back in the day I accidentally linked my Mushi 1.01 bonus download to my US Gamertag whereas all my other bonus downloads are on my JPN Gamertag. It has always bugged me so now it is good to be able to redownload and link to the proper account.

You still are going to need all those title updates but from what I gather there is a way to save them on a USB drive for offline play. Something I'm going to have to think about doing in the next year or so. Hopefully next week we find out about backward compatibility.

But, you do get full-color silk-screened discs finally. It is also good to have a hard-copy disc out there so folks can swap it around, especially for things like the Pink/Pork and Mushi Matsuri stuff.

Guys sorry if this is a little off-topic, i decided to get back into Shooting games.

I got myself a few Cave titles (Deathsmiles 1&2 Dodonpachi Daifukatsu, Akai Katana,Mushihimesama ver. 1.5)

First question : which of these titles is the best for someone who had a 10 years break in shooting games ?

Second question: I played some DDP and damn i suck, but i also realize that i am having issue with xbox controller it feels imprecise, i end up doing some wrong move i would not do with a ps3/ps2 controller.

I don't feel like getting an arcade stick unless there is a good one for shmups under 100$.

I was thinking of getting this : http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Versus-Controller/dp/B0051MQJWU

Some input/advice would be greatly appreciated !
