The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

Does kinda bum me out about no backwards compatibilty on the new system. Just make it more challenging to preserve/play all the older releases.

But 360 is right up there with the Saturn for me as shooting consoles go. So, I'll always be grateful for that. And they will always be there.

Yep. I am hoping that at E3 they announce a new, cheap, very small version of the 360 & offer that in Japan. If so I'll definitely buy one for backup reasons when my JP360 finally dies.

That would be great. I still have a first model Xbox 360 from 2008 and don't think that it's going to last much longer.

Is there an up-to-date compiled list of all CAVE games released on 360, and which of those are playable on a NA 360? I think I've got 'em all except Espgaluda 2 and Deathsmiles 2.
Not sure if everything is correct but here we go. Hopefully the others will confirm or correct this list. I already added Saidaioujou although it's not out yet.

Playable on US360:
Guwange
Espgaluda 2
Pink Sweets/Muchi Muchi Pork
Mushihime-sama Futari
Deathsmiles
Dodonpachi Resurrection
Deathsmiles II
Akai Katana
Dodonpachi Saidaioujou

Playable only on JP360:
Dodonpachi Daioujou Black Label Extra
Ketsui
Ketsuipachi (on the disc version of Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu Black Label)
Mushihime-sama

Hrm. Just went to Play Asia to change my order from credit card to Paypal for SDOJ. Paid through Paypal. Site still says my order is credit card with the option to pay it off.

Should I be worried? Sent a message through their system just to be sure.

Espgaluda 2 regular Japanese version only
Pink Sweets/Muchi Muchi Pork Japanese version
Mushihime-sama Futari Japanese version
Deathsmiles NA version
Dodonpachi Resurrection PAL version only (there is no NA version)

Akai Katana NA version
Dodonpachi Saidaioujou Japanese version

The disc version of DDP Daifukkatsu Black Label is also jp only (it contains the Ketsuipachi arrange mode). BL is available for everyone via dlc, but without the arrange.

So I have a US 360 and a JP Saturn. I picked up most of the retail Cave shmups I can get on a US X360. Might try to pick up an import PS2 down the line and work backwards. Should these be what I should be going for? I crossed out what I already have (or already preordered).

J-PS2
-Donpachi (J-PSX, Avoid Saturn?)
-Dodonpachi (J-PSX, Avoid Saturn?)
-DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou
-Espgaluda
-Mushihime-sama
-Ibara

PS3 (US)
Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi EXTRA (JP)

XBOX 360 (US)
-Guwange (XBLA)
-Espgaluda II: Black Label (JP)
-Muchi-Muchi Pork / PinkSweets: Ibara Sorekara (JP)
-Mushihime-sama Futari (JP)
-Deathsmiles (US)
-Do-Don-Pachi Ressurection (EU)
-Deathsmiles II (XBLA)
-Akai Katana (US)
-Dodonpachi Saidaioujou (JP)

Arcade Only
-ESP Ra.De.
-Dangun Feveron
-Progear

Mobile Only
-Mushihime-sama Bug Panic
-Dodonpachi Maximum

DoDonPachi Saturn isn't clearly inferior to the PS1 version. Each has their strengths and weaknesses. The PS1 version for example won't allow players to use 2 different ships in 2P mode. The Saturn version lets you use different ships, but the explosions are kinda garbled in that release. Saturn version also has an exclusive Arrange Mode not present in the PS1 release.

If you're going 1P only I'd recommend the PS1 version though. The messed up explosion graphics in the Saturn version are really distracting.

True, I added it to the list.

Btw, I bought a PSP recently and realised it as an option to play the early (Do)donpachi titles via PSN. Has anybody any experience with them on a PSP and if so, do they play well enough to purchase them?

Absolutely. It's uncomfortable to hold the device and play it in tate mode, but the game runs fine and you can still stick to yoko. At 600 yen it's a no-brainer.

They look and play awesome on the PSP. They also play great in tate mode once you get used to holding the PSP that way (not as bad as it seems!)

On the other hand it'll be kind of useless if it doesn't have a disc drive (...and XB1 as a drive attachment doesn't count if you want cheap).

I'm hoping for a compact one too just for my cab setup, I could probably fit a smaller box onto a single board with the converter parts vs having to make shelving or something for the current model (or just stashing it in the dusty back of the cab). Plus I could still use my current one as a regular 360.

Yeah their modify order system is wonky at best, should be fine after getting through with their support though.

New Cave game means a new tate setup!

Gonna be rocking SDOJ and Shooting Love 2. Put the monitor at an angle (placing it on a triangular 3-Ring binder!), pulled the speakers forward and amped them through the receiver for maximum frontal volume, and after careful consideration decided to use the Mushi stick (since Hori failed us again), despite retiring it, for one last hurrah! Less than a week...share your setup for SDOJ!

A new region-free Cave game and I really shouldn't be buying it.

What are the chances it'll be easily purchasable, say, in November or so?

I've been trying to contact NCS about my pre-order for a week now but the emails either fail delivery or no one responds. And I always forget to call during business hours, sigh.

Wait you have a cab (or what seems like a cab) right there!

Don't have 360 adapter stuff for it yet, but I'll be playing here eventually:

Not pictured/not visible: hopefully new speakers. I played Ketsui on a Net City at a meetup and noticed the sound out of that thing kicked the shit out of what the Astro can do, so I've been looking into speaker replacements. There's a few options and it should be a simple swap. I don't expect them to sound great or anything (it's limited to 3" speakers) but any improvement will be nice.

Got an email last night from them, telling me not to worry, my card would be charged in a few days. :/ Uh...guys...I just paid it off with PayPal... No reply to my last message yet. Watch this be the one time my credit card company doesn't decline them on fraud protection.

Well, it's a contest to see what arrives first: SDOJ or my two player Kraylix. Assuming Play Asia figures everything out, the Kraylix should arrive a couple days before SDOJ, enough time to set up the control panel and install everything.

probably going to have to stick to my modded va-sx with the ls-56-01 since my pc/ps3/360 wooden stick is being worked on (art messed up and ps2/dc adapter being modded in)..

so I'll be using this (with an ls-58-01) once it ships back

Actually for the same reason...don't have any 360 adapting hardware. I should get on it sometime this year and buy the stuff (even if it is not a UVC). To be honest, the HD-ified Cave games shine like a star with VGA on my broadcast monitor...like they were made for such a screen. But, yeah, I do have an extra J-360 that is earmarked for my Astro. Pink Sweets will live in it in the Cab!

Btw, the combo of Blast City Panel with pink and green buttons goes exceptionally nice!

Post pics of your Kraylix when you get it all together! I don't have the room right now but I've always wanted a DIY/Kraylix for SFIV.

Jeez PA has to get their modify order and PayPal crap together. Hope that all works out.

That Kraylix looks pretty wild, can it work with a rotated display? Looks like it might fit vertically if you cut out that marquee space between the speakers.

Yeah I'll be interested to see how they look in 480i. What sold me on viletim's SCART-JAMMA adapter was the comparison here:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?p=593581#p593581
Granted it's interlaced so I'll see how it looks in motion, but I expect I'll be ok with it considering how long I played games on a rotated 480i CRT way back. Worst case I think there's some decently priced scan converters that work well.

And yeah I love that Blast City panel...even though at the time I got it cause it was the only choice available cause I couldn't find any new Astro City ones. Worked out well, and made me want a Blast City cab. (If I made my own thing though I'd make something like an Aero Table and replace a table in the living room)

No, but this guy worked with Kray to create a custom one player tate setup that's just gorgeous.

For my first cab I wanted something for multi-use. It's really tempting though to get a customized shmup kit, though. Maybe someday.

My newly adjusted tate setup ready for SDOJ...

Beovision MX7000
&
HRAP2 with an LS-58 and PS-14 GN/DN’s (ignore the bat-top, was just testing it out - going back to a balltop, when I next open up the stick to pop in an LS-56 spring on the 58.)

After calibrating the B&O it looks pretty amazing, I like that its the exact same size as an Egret 2 monitor also. The inbuilt de-interlacing circuit is a godsend, giving me solid scanlines on the 360 through scart rgb. Cave games after a little configuration in their picture settings games look virtually arcade perfect, especially Mushi Futari and DDP DFK.
The Inbuilt speaker is really great too, makes for a very nice tidy setup.
Feeling pretty satisfied with this setup right now, just need a solution for running shmup mame at 240p too this display and It’s perfect!

Very cool, keep us posted with the results on the viletim turnkey solution. I have cruised those threads in the past. Another thing holding me back is I have an Egret 3 here with direct VGA input which I've always wanted to put a DC and J-360 into. But it is having some sync issues where the screen image cycles. I reckon it is a quick fix but is difficult to pinpoint.

AND I'd kill for an Aero (or Neo) table!

What's the proportion of region-free to region-locked Cave games? I was considering getting a 360 on the cheap when the Xbox One comes out for stuff I missed like Cave's games, but not sure how limited I'd be by a North American system.

literally posted on the exact same page lol..

Not sure if everything is correct but here we go. Hopefully the others will confirm or correct this list. I already added Saidaioujou although it's not out yet.

Playable on US360:
Guwange
Espgaluda 2
Pink Sweets/Muchi Muchi Pork
Mushihime-sama Futari
Deathsmiles
Dodonpachi Resurrection
Deathsmiles II
Akai Katana
Dodonpachi Saidaioujou

Playable only on JP360:
Dodonpachi Daioujou Black Label Extra
Ketsui
Ketsuipachi (on the disc version of Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu Black Label)
Mushihime-sama
keep in mind, the PS3 is getting Ketsui and you can play mushihime-sama and dodonpachi daioujou on JPS2. also keep in mind that 90% of US 360 games are region-free and will work on a J360 with the exceptions will be games that are localized over here like the US version of deathsmiles, el shaddai, earth defense force, etc.. I'm sure that didn't make the decision easier.

here's some random compatibility guide I found to give you an idea: http://gaming.wikia.com/wiki/Region_Free_Xbox_360_Games

Derp, sorry. Somehow I missed that...

Thanks, that helps! Yeah, I own Mushi for PS2 and I'm getting Ketsui for PS3, so that doesn't leave too much only playable on a J360. Much as I'd enjoy Mushi 1.5, otherwise it sounds like I'd be okay with a US360.

Yeah, what Some-Mist said. If you are at all interested in CAVE games and don't have a 360, looking for a cheaper JP 360 after One comes out is your best bet. Very few US games are region locked (but there are some notable ones, including, ironically, US Akai Katana).

It is remarkably robust for Cave games. Just a quick count and the titles that are either region-free or actually got a Western release (including XBLA):

7 out of 13 Cave Games (with one more getting a region-free release on PS3, Ketsui)

The rest of the 360 Shooting catalog is a bit more "locked" up." There have been 43 released titles. Counting the region-free, or western-released titles (including XBLA):

29 of the 43 Shooting Releases (with one getting a region-free release on PS3 already, Mamoru-kun; and one more getting a region-free release on PS3, Ketsui)

Really, a J-360 is not necessary as most of the titles have gotten a western release. It is just that there are some very choice titles still in the J-Catalog.

If you're buying your first 360 why not go for the whole package and get a J360 so you can play everything? I'm guessing there are other games you want to play, but Asian English versions should suffice for those rare US titles that are region locked.

Also, DDP DOJ Black Label isn't playable on PS2 and the Mushi 360 port is a lot better apparently.

Got my first 2-ALL of DOJBL (360 ver) just now:

NT4FXy4.jpg

(Final score was 1,246,855,220)

This run was pretty awful to be honest. I died on the 1-4 boss, broke my chain in 1-5, and I think I died twice in 2-2... I paused the game and was just about to restart (side note: pausing prevents you from saving your replay :( ), but I decided to keep playing just to get some more practice in. I thought the run was hopeless, but pretty much everything went perfectly, and once I reached Hibachi with 3 lives I realized I actually had a chance. I've cleared the second loop on MAME a bunch of times when starting from 2-1 (or earlier), but this was my first legit 2-ALL from start to finish. Just in time for SDOJ.

Going by some posts over on Shmups forums, looks like SDOJ is getting to retailers. My Play-Asia status is now on "preparing order". Also saw this post over there:
Last year when Mushimesama HD was released, I had preordered from Play-Asia and used Fed Ex 3 day shipping. The game was playing on my Xbox before 10am on release day. Hope this year is no different.

Congrats! I can only imagine how great that must feel.

I just got an confirmation from amiami and paid immediately. Hopefully they'll ship soon.

Anyone making an OT btw?

Interesting, I used FedEx, so we'll see what happens. P-A did get back to me over the weekend and sorted out my PayPal problem, so I'm set. Plus I ended up with a credit which I just applied to JoJo's, so it all worked out in the end.

Excellent! Congratulations, man. I only dream of playing at that level.

FedEx here too. I originally did the slow shipping but Pink/Muchi dropped in price (and SDOJ a little) so I just switched up to FedEx with the savings. Also have my JAMMA adapter on the way from Australia, not sure what shipping that guy is using yet though. Hopefully that one doesn't take too long.

So is there any preorder bonus like DLC with Saidaioujou? Because I'm not really in a shmup sorta mood right now, but if there's some reason why I should nab it now rather than later... I'll go ahead and buy it anyway.

Nothing. All versions three come with the same game and features. The LE and SLE just come with more baubles.
