I think that quote came from Nintendo themselves. I'm at the point where anything less than a new Metroid game from will be a disappointment.

That was from Paul Gate, I wouldn't trust him much. He was the one who made up the "Star Fox X Metriod" rumor.

Would you be disappointed if it was a new IP?
 
I want to believe, but unless a showing is confirmed in advance, I'm not getting my hopes up about anything that hasn't been shown or mentioned in a Nintendo Direct, and even about a couple games that have been (Bayonetta 2, X).

Looks like the new Mario Kart will be a bit of a departure.
 
Lets hope its not Mario Kart. I am looking forward to the new Mario Kart, but that is something that can be handled by any old studio.
 
I'm not super optimistic for the eventual enemies design of the game knowing they hired darksiders artists and seeing this deviant art page. It wasn't the best part of metroid prime either.
 
I wouldn't be surprised to see it saved for a later Nintendo Direct / a couple days into E3 as opposed to the E3 Direct itself.

I can see them playing the same trick they did with The Wonderful 101 /Smash Bros by holding something back.

I don't know, some of their Prime designs were excellent, imo:

The thing about it is....no matter what they show I don't think it can live up to any of the hype.

Especially with next-gen right on the horizon. Expecting to be massively disappointed/underwhelmed honestly.

We can’t leave without asking about Metroid Dread. Did it ever exist?

I cannot deny the existence of such a project in the past but cannot say if it will be what I move onto next or not. I’m sorry but we would like to keep that game a mystery. After all, there has been a lot of speculation surrounding Dread. And my hope, if at all possible, is to reset the situation at once and start from scratch.

Oh, I don't doubt their credentials for a second. I just happen to prefer games from other Nintendo studios. This isn't a slight on them at all. A part of me would like it to be a new IP. Of the genres out there, I would love a fighting game which isn't Mario-fied/Smash Bros (we had this with Killer Instinct in the past, while Soul Calibur 2 performed very well on the GameCube - I think there's a place for it). Actually, that would be an interesting thread - We hear a lot from people (primarily North America/Anglosphere) about how Nintendo should 'make new IPs', but the people who say this never actually tell us WHAT kind of IPs and genres they would like, or what would encourage them to bite and buy a Nintendo console. Unfortunately, I can't make it, as I'm not a full member on here.

Am I the only one thinking people getting way to overhyped for this Retro game and there might just be some major disappointment when the announcement is finally made?
 
This wait is almost getting unbearable. Hopefully if its Metroid Prime 4 or whatever it'll be as good as the first 3. Most of their previous leads have left.

They've been making the game for years and they won't talk about it even amongst the other huge games.

I'd imagine that when most people say "I want Retro to make a new IP," they mean a character-driven action-adventure game in the grand tradition of Mario, Zelda, Metroid. We haven't seen Nintendo create such an IP, giving it the AAA treatment and everything, since... Pikmin was introduced back on the GCN. That was the last time Nintendo gave us a AAA new IP starring an all-new character in an all-new world, on a whole new adventure with all-new mechanics and such. That's what Retro will ideally give us.

I wish they could become like 90s Rare where they can pump out 5 AAA games a year

If it really is that rumored Star Fox X Metroid it may seem bizarre but I'm sure Retro will make it fucking awesome to the point where people will be clamoring for more once the game drops.


It would be like if Marvel made Iron Man X Guardians of the Galaxy......oh wait...

No development entity can pump out 5 - AAA games a year in the generation of today. Both from a financial perspective and the amount of staff required. But Retro ported Metroid Prime 1, Metroid Prime 2. Developed Donkey Kong Country. Assisted in Mario Kart 7. They've been working dawg!

Metroid Dread was initially leaked alongside other first-party DS games like Tetris DS. The game has always been logically linked to Sakamoto's hand held Metroid team, his acknowledgement semi-confirms that. It was not a Retro Studios project.
 
I can't wait to see the outcome of this and there are only 3 possible:

1) They don't show shit, everyone gets angry and the waiting hype cycle restarts itself again.
2) They show something nobody wants, everything goes to the shit bin, news of riots outside Retro's office appear on national tv, people scream and cry from anger.
3) They show the unimmaginable, something that melts people's faces, GAF servers burn, people scream and cry from excitement.

I know it'll be 2).

It's quite possible their own project has been put on hold in order for them to help get Mario Kart out the door. Nintendo may be looking to replicate the 3D Mario/Mario Kart one-two punch that boosted 3DS sales/brand equity at the end of 2011. Retro helped with one-half of the tracks in that game, as well as testing it, so it's possible they may do so again.
