Revisiting the PS4 presentation - Mark Cerny

I followed another GAF users advice, and had another look at the PS4 presentation. More specifically I looked at the Mark Cerny part of the presentation. Remembering some mixed emotions after Sony had their presentation, what are your feelings if you watch it again in the light of the material that was shown at MS presentation of the Xbox One?

cerny's voice is very soothing. i thought it was a great presentation, and the xbox one presentation further confirmed that.

Sony wanted to talk specs, MS didnt. I think this is the obvious thing to do if your specs aren't quite as good. No point in helping others draw comparisons.

It's a shame. Id like to know the unique hardware inside it.

Easily the best part of the presentation. I couldnt believe that Sony was accepting their mistakes, Cerny had a big hand in driving that across.

Remembering some mixed emotions after Sony had their presentation,

What? It showed hardware, games, tech demo's, concept tech. Everything was great.

Really the only thing that wasn't there was the console itself, but everyone knows it was always going to be, you know, a black box.

Almost sounds like Sony.

I sometimes watch the Cerny part from time to time, not because he's talking about the PS4 but because he's a very good speaker and make anything he say sound interesting. I wish my teachers in school were like Cerny, I would have actually learned more stuff then.

Cerny sounds so passionate. Same with the DriveClub guy and creepy inFamous dude. It's nice to hear from people who actually care about games.

So where was all the TV stuff from Sony? No where!

The most important thing and Sony offered nothing on it. Xbox One all the way!

Yes, sarcasm.

It's the same, I'm underwhelmed by both, for different reasons. Microsoft didn't go into enough detail about many important issues, and didn't have time to show many games (although I never expected that they would so that was not disappointing), whereas Sony's whole presentation was too drawn out and made PS4 seem conservative and uninspired (not that Microsoft was much better in that regard, even if I find their vision a tad more interesting), but at least they showed more games and tech demos. Microsoft also screwed up by wasting time on region-specific features on a global reveal event. What the fuck were they thinking with all that ESPN and NFL garbage?

I might have expressed myself badly there; I read various comments from people who were talking about his personal style etc. For me, it was refreshing to see a calm and informed individual such as Cerny explaining in simple terms for the press instead of another hyped up person in a suit.

The thing about Cerny's presentation that sticks out even more after Microsofts, is that it felt genuine.

He admitted Sony's failings, told us how they had worked to rectify them, and showed us conclusive evidence of said efforts. We were told about the hardware, the tech, and most importantly, A SHITLOAD OF GAMES.

The Microsoft conference by comparison was a heavily produced diversion from all the bullshit that was uncovered right after. The entire thing felt deceptive and totally against what gaming is about.

On its own it was quiet a bad presentation was like 30 min too long and could have cut some of the longer game intro. But after watching yesterday Mark Cerny was boss on that stage not running around in circles avoiding specs like ms presenters did.

The biggest thing for me from the Sony presentation was "we know who got us where we are today, this is for you". They covered the specs, the vision for the system, enough games to whet the appetite and a few OS bits. But front and centre was games games games.

Mark seems like a really nice, straightforward and down-to-earth kind of dude. At least, that's what comes across in the presentation.

In terms of focus, it's like MS focused on providing an easier way for me to watch television, and Sony focused on making it easier for developers to make games.

I like the second strategy.

He presented complex information in a simple, transparent, and digestible manner. He's the opposite of Kutaragi, who (while also being a genius) chose a more abstract, numbers-driven approach to his presentations.

Making Cerny the 'face' of the PS4 was a brilliant calculation.

I wasn't floored by the PS4 reveal or anything, but I still thought it was pretty good.
Yesterday's conference was more of an affirmation for me than anything that Microsoft doesn't belong in the game industry.
They want to own the living room, to squeeze their bloated OS into every corner of your life. Making games is a means to an end for them, and they're willing to dump literally billions into the business if it means they succeed.

They literally lost a billion dollars in their gaming division every year of the Xbox's life.
Same thing with Bing - it's not as good as Google, has resorted to stealing search results from Google, hasn't gained much traction, but they're not quitting because Microsoft thinks they need to be in that space.

Meanwhile you have Nintendo, who are only invested in games, and Sony, which has proven since the PlayStation 1 that they are a great company for the industry.
Microsoft has been irrelevant to me, and it looks like they will continue to be.

... whereas Sony's whole presentation was too drawn out and made PS4 seem conservative and uninspired
Sony opened the conference with a brilliant video showing it's commitment to gaming.
They showed the PS4, talked specs and GAMES.
Hint: It's a gaming console FFS, what were you expecting?

"Here's the PS4, it's made out of this and this and it plays games."

Fine by me and 99% of GAF, IIRC.

Look at all those video games at the start, they've even got Sephiroth. Microsoft should have done a montage of all their games, it only would have taken 5 seconds.

Cerny romantically expressed the idea of a "gaming platform" while giving explicit details. The guys and gals at Microsoft cared way too much about watching TV (a retrogression, really) and looked at games more like another box to check off.

Boom. This is exactly what I wanted to say. Watching his presentation makes you say "Yep. Sony fucked up in the past but they're learning and are promising that they have learned."

Maybe it was Cerny's calm voice... whatever it is, he is being sincere and I'm glad he took over the role.

came here to say this. thanks.

I'd agree with this, especially in regards to his voice. I feel... safer when he's speaking.

Seriously though, where the Xbox presentation felt glossy and grandstanding, I feel like the Sony event was more intimate and informative. I think Cerny did a great job.

I hadn't watched the PS4 reveal in the first place so after the Xbox One reveal I watched it. My impressions from the PS4 reveal is that it's about developers and gamers. The PS4 will be a console for gamers. Everyone that came on that stage made me fell reassured that the PS4 is the console for me and the next gen console I have to have. It was far and above what MS did.

Cerny and company spoke with enthusiasm and sometimes hilarious intensity. They all seemed extremely excited to finally show something they were proud of.

It felt like I was having a conversation with Cerny about the video game system PS4, with Microsoft it felt like a salesman was standing in my doorway yelling nonsensical buzzwords about TV.

he must present again at e3 press conference, and all the following conferences.

Since he can speak Japanese, he should do it for TGS too

I can't wait for the next event, be funny if at the end they say "Xbox Go Home"

he communicated his vision for the next generation calmly, precisely and with great clarity. whereas everyone at the microsoft conference talked entirely in nonsense marketing speak.

Basically this.

Sony still believes in console games as a medium and profitable business. I get the feeling Microsoft doesn't so much, hence them not putting all their eggs in that basket.

I re watched it before the MS presentation so i could kinda remember what to expect....

Still uninpressive. Car game. Dudebro shooter game. One game with colorful graphics that nobody will buy...

But since Xbox One reveal was SO HORRIBLE, it even looks better now.

Microsoft showed games?

Huh.

I saw concept videos, cut scenes, pre-rendered sports footage, wireframes and lots of slow-mo stuff at Microsoft's show. I didn't see any games.

At Sony's show, we saw playable games.

This also rang true for me. The PS4 event felt like people like us were behind it and we're excited about it as I was, while the XBONE one felt like a business trying sell me a product.

Sorry I just skipped Cerny's part and jumped to the Killzone demo. Goddammit, the game looks absolutely phenomenal. Back in February I thought yeah it looks good but I didn't think it was THIS good.

Games were a little bit if a let down though (imo).

I remember feeling underwhelmed after the PS4 reveal...but compared to how I feel now, the Sony reveal was like great sex
