Monolithsoft WiiU trailer - X (Takahashi x Tanaka x Sawano, Xenoblade x/multiplayer?)

I didn't like the Xenoblade boxart. Just the colour use bothered me. The bright blue and bright green with a big red sword... ehhh. I hope they do something better this time around.

Whaaaa?

Xenoblade has one of the nicest boxes I've seen. I just wish they hadn't tacked on "Chronicles" to our version. Kinda like Fragile, it was a good title as is.

We should pour your "juice" in some cups and play a drinking game.

Iwata shows a new X trailer? Drink some of Currygan's juice.

Iwata announces X for 2013 worldwide release? Throw that juice all over your face.

Iwata shows X trailer, announces X for 2013 worldwide release, and announces an HD version of Xenoblade Chronicles? Throw that juice all over your face in slow motion.

Kinky

We need that gif with the girl pouring water on her face.

You know, I hope they show off some of the supposed online multiplayer aspects of the game in a new trailer.

Not water, but close enough.

this made me laugh more than it should have

but I ain't counting on a 2013 worldwide release....unless Iwata really goes full megaton mode and decides to make the WiiU a juggernaut

Seeing as how the thread's active again, I thought I'd run a theory of mine by the Monolith fans of this site.

I've been obsessing over this game for a while, and at this point, I'm certain this has nothing to do with Xenoblade (aside from being its spiritual successor). The more I watch the trailer, the more I'm convinced that one of the basic premises of the game is that humans have crash-landed or have come to explore and possibly terraform a primitive alien planet.

I've organised my thoughts and evidence presented in the trailer into a (hopefully) tangible analysis below.

Firstly, let's take a look at the gargantuan grey structure that we see throughout the trailer. I've seen many people refer to it as a wall protecting a human colony, with the various protuberances atop it referred to as sentry guns or turrets.

monolithsoftx1080pninte.jpg

But upon closer examination, they appear to be cranes and pulley systems. I believe this structure to be the ship - a crash-landed ship, to be precise - upon which the humans came, and the cranes and pulleys are used to salvage debris and whatnot.

To edify further, take a look at this screenshot and note the terrain around the ship. There's a clear deformation there indicating something cratered into it.

monolithsoftx1080pninte.jpg

The second intimation comes from the trailer piece- rather, the first section (spans about twenty-eight seconds before abruptly ending and giving way to the bombastic choir segment). The atmosphere, I feel, that they're trying to convey with that music is one of exploration of uncharted territory (within the context of my theory, a foreign planet). Similar arrangements have been used in various sci-fi and adventure movies, unfortunately, however, nothing specific is coming to mind at the moment.

Another element that lends credence to my speculation is the stark technological contrast being displayed throughout the trailer. We see a myriad of high-tech machinery and weaponry, but nowhere can be seen even the most faintest glimmers of human civilization- no roads, guideposts, or anything indicative of the existence of intelligent beings. Of course, I realize we've only seen one area of the game, and it's subject to change, but this lends more to the "humans exploring foreign planet" portion of my theory.

monolithsoftx1080pninte.jpg

And finally, the biggest piece of supporting evidence is the concept art of a crashed-landed UFO Monolith released way back when.

ufol.jpg

Might the scenery in that image have served as the basis for the game? I know it's close to E3 and all, but I thought I'd do it for fun and to get my hype going. :P

That GIF never gets old.

As to the other other previous poster, I can't particularly find any flaws in your reasoning, other than perhaps lack of any indication from Monolith. Your strongest argument is the technological disparity one, which while strong, isn't concrete. Could be time travel. :x

I've actually been thinking alongside the same lines as onilink88. It certainly does seem to imply that they're exploring an unknown world. Or forced to land there. And if the scale of the mechs are any indication + how big Xenoblade's world was, it might be a very big world...

Really interesting theory, and it does sound very plausible.

Hope it is!

I still have the trailer on my desktop ever since January.
Every time I see this thread pop up, I go back and watch it.

makes me wish i could get a copy of xenoblade that didnt cost 200 dollars plus delivery

i dont like pirating games and i never do but i might have to to play that game

i don't think xenoblade chronicles left much room for it to be a real sequel. it would just be loosely related, set in the same world and such. i don't know if i agree on exploring alien planets quite yet, it could easily just be islands. islands are a great setting for open-world games like this because you don't need to think up plot devices as to why you can't go here or there - you can just go anywhere you can see. a full alien planet would be highly ambitious. the game will open and tell the tale of what happened in xenoblade chronicles, we'll get a new cast of characters, references to shulk to tie him in, begin whatever not-related-to-OG-xenoblade plotline they think up.

I wonder how the other members/players fit into the campaign if it is a multiplayer game. Perhaps our characters are generic and we just take part in the story a la DQ9 (& X?) and FF1. Or that the Player 1-4 names are just a temporary filler name for the actual characters.

Terrible, aye? I was just browsing amazon.ca a few weeks ago, and a brand new copy was going for 95 dollars -- I passed it up. Now we've got used copies going for $185, and on ebay bidding wars like crazy.

I'll import it, and play it on my pc at this rate.

Good memories with this gif. Still blows my mind somewhat.

Always lol'd when people use the lolkillzoneshadowfall.gif to counter it.

i sitll think this gif is nothing special. just empty barren landscape ditthered shadows and good lightning

I just realized something. The fact that the west begged Nintendo to bring Xenoblade over here has probably had a big effect on the future of X here in the west.

If it wasn't for this, maybe.....X would never come here or exist in this form. Well done guys.

Your looking at it wrong. The GIF represents that feeling of freedom and exploration that gave us all a boost of hype.

Plus that's an unfinished product your looking at.

It could also be that since the Wii U is starved for software, Nintendo would Localize anything to increase library.

Especially given how...exactly how Many Japanese games have been announced for the Wii U on the third parties front that arent Western catering?

The gif is nothing special by itself, but having played Xenoblade I know what exploration in that games means. Xenoblade was breathtaking despite being on the Wii.

Excellent analysis, and I'm glad we're discussing a little bit again. On closer inspection, those turrets do look like a crane and pulley system. However, I still think this game is connected to Xenoblade somehow. There's a character who wields a gunlance similar to Reyn. The battle system is also identical to the one found in Xenoblade. I'm aware that the same developer tends to create similar games, but I can't imagine using the same exact battle system for a new IP that is unrelated to Xenoblade.

I also think that the character shown at the end of the trailer has something to do with Shulk. He could be a relative or something, but his face is the only one that's highlighted. As far as I can see, you don't control that character at all. None of the playable characters' faces were shown. Why would they show us that face? I'm convinced that we're supposed to be interested in who this character is, and I think we would be more interested if he was a character related to someone from Xenoblade than if he were a new character that has no relation to anything we've ever seen before.

I'm so glad I bought it at launch, best RPG of last generation.

Edit: It sounds like I'm rubbing it in...I'm not.

I actually pre-ordered it, lost my credit card, and never changed my info on the order. :/ lol

I definitely don't think it's empty especially considering how high the mech appears to be at least based on this.

EDIT: lol forgot the word high....

You remember Jin and Citan from Gears and Saga, don't you? :)

How would they not fit in the... "campaign"? :P

As has been mentioned numerous times in this thread, there is precedence set for such an endeavor by Monolith: Soma Bringer. You had a player-controlled character accompanied by two AI characters (story-relevant characters, not player-created avatars), just like Xenoblade. And you could have friends control those two AI character via a local wireless connection with their DSs. The difference between X and Soma Bring is that that connection will occur online rather than locally.

i sitll think this gif is nothing special. just empty barren landscape ditthered shadows and good lightning

Ridiculously reductive and ignorant statement; characteristic of someone who hasn't played Xenoblade. Also, from that height and distance, of course it looks barren.
