We really need to get Japan in on this. I'm surprised they've been so quiet. Maybe Japan doesn't have much next gen excitement to begin with so they're apathetic?

I don't see Japanese retailers installing Microsoft's system. they will probably be exempt.

They will probably just fuck over the EU and US.

Just called XBL to cancel my auto renew, which is due in September. She never even asked me why. Normally they ask you why, and offer you some sort of incentive.
Not a single f*ck was given by the rep. She was actually pretty friendly and just proceeded to cancel for me. I wonder if they're just getting so many cancels they don't bother to ask / save anymore?

Either way, your move Sony!

Come to think of it, if we want to make ourselves heard by Microsoft too, everyone should just call in and cancel their auto renewals. My rep aside, they will start asking why once a few thousand people call in to do that in a single afternoon

Is it also a win if Sony made DRM optional?

I'd say so. One option means that publishers can choose whether or not they want it in their game while the other doesn't give them an option. I actually find it hard to believe that many Japanese publishers would implement it into their games

It'll be in The Guardian again tomorrow:

Good news.

Problem is, we should be the ones to take the initiative and overcome the language barrier.

Can we please find a couple of generous, japanese speaking gaffers to get the ball rolling? Go on 2ch, tweet to sympathetic game bloggers, etc?

Only people here who live in Japan can post on 2ch. VPNs don't work.

Not sure what game bloggers on twitter we can go after.

Also the whole deal (this thread, the website, tumblr, etc) are all in English so it might be hard to condense all of this into a short couple of tweets even in Japanese.

It wouldn't be great but it would be much preferable to a system wide lock. Realistically this may be the best we can hope for but I'm still holding out hope that even optional DRM can be stopped.

I agree. I'd be fine with a publisher optional though. Way easier to boycott a publisher or specific game than an entire console.

Maybe some of the guys doing podcasts about games in Japan (WAHP, RedSunGamer) could be helpful? Many of them are also GAF members. And I remember them covering the japanese gaming twittersphere on their podcasts.

If Sony decides not to go through with this DRM thing it would be so major for them as far as public image is concerned. They would be painted as the 'Good Guy' while MS would be the opposite. Also, they have to be eating up all this publicity.

the perception of them being the good guy means nothing. specifically if the other system with DRM ends up getting games first. Which is pretty much what would happen. It's really dictated by what publishers want to do. They want to recoup as much money as possible so it's easy to see which direction they will go.

This E3 is going to be huge isnt it?

Now that this has spread far beyond gaf and twitter, I feel like everyone will be watching Sony to see how they react.

Glad I am not giving their presentation.

Someone could try contacting DJMizuhara. I haven't seen him around in awhile, but he's part of RSG. I think he might help us out.

This is a pretty crazy suggestion but has anyone thought of getting the guys at Anon to help spread the word? They usually get onto consumer/civil type stuff quickly. I dunno if they can be completely trusted though..

Ok, I know this has been already been responded to but this is where the thread is on the verge of becoming parody.

Hey guys, does anybody know exactly how many unique twitter accounts have participated in the hashtags for this? Also, how many tweets have been made with the hashtags?

lol, from that section.

"Kinect used its facial recognition to scan a room full of people and note if there was someone in the room it didn't recognize. It then told the console owner that there is someone in the room it didn't recognize and asked the new person to identify themselves"

Kinect sounds like a dick.

Imagine sitting in darkness, playing some game and suddenly Kinect starts fucking up and says someone else is in the room with you.

I tried talking to couple of random japanese people and all I got was;
We don't care about MS, overseas issue, we care about Region free and there has not been comment from sony about anything.

I did post here couple of times about Japanese translation (of important parts) but got nothing out of it.

I think Japan doesn't really have to do anything, since it's fairly well known how huge the used games market is there. And after the incredibly poor 360 sales, Microsoft probably isn't even considering Japan to be an area of focus. The Xbox One reveal seemed to be focused entirely on the American market.

But this is also about Sony.

(First and foremost, actually).

1) fuck that for a laugh
2) kojima would do some bad ass stuff with kinect, though
3) hmmm...

[edit] add illumiroom to the mix and you've got yourself a little box of nightmares.

What if Sony comes out and says, "It's up to each publisher if DRM will be used, but our first party titles will be not be implimenting DRM."

I think that's the best that's coming from this honestly.

Yeah, I get the feeling the japanese wont say anything until things are set in stone.

Then its too late.

Funny that they don't give a rats ass about the Xbone though. Good luck to microsoft if they want that market.

I know this is completely unrelated but I had a real scare last night.

While thinking over all this #PS4noDRM I was playing Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal on my PS3 and I think I was disconnected from PSN and a notification instantly popped up saying " You must be connected to Playstation Network to access the online features of this game".
It just kind of startled me since I was thinking about the DRM with always online and started thinking how it would be a problem if my internet went out on PS4...

Well, I was playing Ratchet and Clank offline in singleplayer so I was surprised that notification popped up. I clicked the circle button though and it let me continue playing offline so there was no issue. Just startled me.
