UK Xbox One pre-orders ahead of PS4, although PS4 enjoys post Xbox spike

That is barely an article, it is click bait in every possible way. A tiny piece about one mysterious unconfirmed source saying that they've had more Xbone preorders than PS4? Ridiculous.

The site makes it sound like their mysterious sources are "my mate who works at a local GAME."

All of these figures are meaningless as gauges of actual "success". That's something that's true when Amazon shows PS4 ahead of XB1 and true when this report shows XB1 ahead of PS4.

The headline has now changed, too, which makes it even worse.

I don't really get why the pre-orders of Xbox One in UK are rising. All those "fantastic" TV features that will make the Xbox One the better console possible will not be available in that country. Not this year. So, why this reaction?

This is what i was wondering also. Being in the Uk the tv features just turned me off completely. I already have a sky subscription with movies and sports so it just seems a waste of money to me. I like the NFL too but i get all the NFL i need on sky so to me i feel like id be buying something a already have.

Could just be me though :p

The article is really confusing to me now. So they called some retailers? As in different chains or as in different of the same chain?

Are preorders available everywhere in the uk? I don't think they are in the us.

They probably called up some shops and asked them the standing of the pre-orders. This info is as meaningless as the amazon charts in Germany and UK (where the PS4 is beating the XB one).

Why would you pre-order the console now?

Yeah, those consoles should be ordered as soon as possible. I ordered couple of Xbox Ones and PS4s over 6 months ago; it doesn't cost anything, I'll probably have the possibility to get one on the launch day if I want without any hassle and now I can just follow the rumors/news/previews/reviews/etc up to release until making purchase decisions.

I'm leaning towards the PS4 but I am waiting until after E3 before I pre order. I really don't see myself getting an Xbox One at all but E3 could change whether I get a PS4 day 1 or if I wait for a bit. Either way, MS isn't going to be getting any more money off me.

I wonder why the UK is so Xbox-heavy. Is this a language thing? English speaking players playing with other English speaking players across the pond? Or is this all Netflix' fault? Do Brits just love to pay for online gaming? Shared affinities for shooting dudes/aliens in the face? Or is it just because it's green? How? Somebody explain this to me!

edit: forgot the most important question of all: is it the shoes?

In the UK People really like online gaming, and early on, the 360 was the best place for online gaming. and everyone's friend would be playing cod/fifa on the 360.

Being cheaper, exclusives, advertising + having a year head start I think helped too.

having a cheap box with a good online community and features (native in the box voice chat, party chat etc) and having the latest shooter and sports games is the way to win the UK market.

It is looking like the PS4 will match and exceed the online features of the 360 and include some sought of microphone in the box if they can have this + the latest shooters, sports games and have no online subscription fee and MS still charge for XBL , A lot of UK gamers will go with the PS4

I'd guess people are pre ordering because there is no doubt it will have plenty of games and it's a shiny new console generation.

At the end of the day those tv features ( and whether/when the UK gets them) don't change the fact it's a games console and people are ready for them.

Plus I don't know why people are getting so upset that MS might have the advantage at this stage, a pre order is simply a button press, no money changes hands , it can be cancelled at anytime.....they really mean nothing at this point until we get a price and release date.

Heard back from two sources.

Retailer A. Source is purchasing manager for SE/London region. Says pre-orders haven't started yet for either console.

Retailer B. Source is a buyer, nationwide. Says pre-orders are about the same for each, but the absolute figures are pitifully small. Less than 500 for each.

Waiting on two more sources.

But they should also serve as a reminder that the angry internet masses are often not representative of the wider buying public.

The "wider buying public" is pre-ordering a new console without a price six months before release?

Such big excitement for next gen in UK

XD

Well I was in a GAME store yesterday and an employee asked if I would like to preorder the Xbox One. I jokingly replied "Hell no", he laughed and told me that that's same reaction everyone gives him.

So I live in hope that not all UK gamers bend over so easily.

Not surpising, sony's unveiling was fantastic for us gamers but it did not catch the attention of the mainstream at all, not showing a box was a huge mistake, people are stupid like that. I've seen tweets from friends saying that if they show the ps4 and it sucks he will be getting an xbone, making it sound like they haven't even unveiled the damn thing. We laugh here at the cod ghosts presentation, but ive seen average joes that swallowed up all the shit that the conference served and were impressed when the guy on stage told them how much better these new dogs looked. Sony has to fix this problem and fast.

Because we know MS is going with DRM of sorts. Sony has said you can play used games, thus giving the impression of no DRM.

MS has also said you can play used games. We probably know mostly how it is going to work, though things can still change I suppose.

Sony has said you will be able to play used games, but we have no idea if it means the same as XB1, or as the 360/PS3. Could be either, though I am thinking it will be the same as the XB1

A lot of people I know are only buying for FIFA.

Seriously, that's their only reason. They're buying it as though it won't be available on PS3. People are dumb.

Completely agree

We all fell in love with the online gaming that MS gave us (even if we had to pay for it) and the games that came out took advantage of it.

Now with all that is going on and the fact that both companies are essentially giving gamers a clean slate by not giving backwards compatibility, most people will probably see this as the time to make your move one way or another.

Some people will no doubt keep their old console but many early adopters (like me) will trade in their old console.

PS4: it's a next gen console. Look at this Killzone demo
Xbox: it's a next gen console + miscellaneous bullshit. Look at this tv crap + CoD trailer thing

At this point in the game neither is especially appealing but Xbox One has more bulletpoints and is associated with the biggest game in the world. After E3 will be when people can make a realistic decision either way which one is better.

Heard back from one more source:

Retailer C. Source is a purchasing manager for SE/Lon regions. Says that they only have Xbox One available to pre-order. Won't start PS4 pre-orders for a while yet until at least they get more info on the box. He said it's too hard to sell something to people if they don't know what it looks like. Xbox One pre-orders are less than 1000 in his region, PS4 orders are obviously 0.

Still waiting for one more source, is the biggest one, but might not get a reply today.

I doubt that. Gamertags are being migrated over to Xbox One, it will have more popular shooters (Gears, Halo)a bunch of new shooters and XBL fee is insignificant to play with your existing mates who are also on XBL.

I am sure if the story was the other way around, many people on this part of Neogaf would rejoice and sing praise that the mass had been sway by the tireless crusaders to right the wrong done to us by Microsoft. It is just another article no difference than all the other "negative" article on Xbox One.

Not sure if you're allowed to reveal this, but is source B at a retailer you'd expect to sell a lot of units once people know all the facts about both consoles, or at a smaller retailer?

If preorders have no price it's kinda unrealistic to expect many people to jump in. The only people who would are people hoping they'll sell out and they can flip them for a profit.

I preorderd both from amazon just in case - no money deposit means I can cancel at all times.

I'am talking about the UK market, where halo and gears although have good sails, the majority of gamers care more about fifa and cod. + a lot of ppl are poor/appreciate value or a tight asses in UK and would rather not play for XBL and convince there mates to get a PS4 because of this, well thats what I have done.

I just hope sony still dont charge for multiplayer and on demand iplayers, and if MS dont charge this time round I might still go with them.

i have not decided until the fat CEO'S sings.

freeview and freesat being the most popular because they are free, I really dont see why the X1 could not offer the same service as the US market for freesat + freeview, it would just be a software change afterall.

There aren't any Freesat or Freeview boxes that support HDMI-CEC to send the signals back to.

Which means another box plunked in front of your Freeview box to foward over the infrared codes. Which aren't standardised, so you'll have to spend half an hour trial and error setting them up for each box. And will introduce half a second of lag on every channel change.

All so you can do voice recognition that usually fails with a British accent anyway.

That's not a mass market proposition. It doesn't do anything good to improve the experience, and the setup is far too fiddly and techy.

And we're not even getting to the point of requiring a web based API (since the Xbone can't read the schedule information from the box) that had the schedule on it and was updated as quickly as the broadcast DVB EPG (which doesn't exist and the broadcasters would be loathe to set one up). Accessing said EPG comes with HDCP DRM requirements which usually involve hardware level implementation. Has Microsoft got any of these?

The answer is no.

Microsoft aren't going to spend the money on coding up the thousands of variations they would have to do. It would cost more money than the Xbone will ever make.

Another thing tv companies could do in partnership with Microsoft is sell X1 companion boxes, where they would create a small box (apple tv size) that receives the signal and decodes it and the X1 does everything else. It would certainly be better then having twho big boxes under your tv.

or maybe third parties could create a freeview/freesat HD dongle which has sat cable inputs in it and a HDMI out for the X1. Having a small power brick sized dongle would be a lot better then having to have a separate cable box too, and it would really be like having one box for everything because the dongle would be hidden to the eye.

That would actually be a great product ''fressat/freeview HD dongle for xbox one''

It really wouldn't. For the same money you'd be able to buy a better product for your needs that did more in virtually every possible category.

and I dont see why the X1 could not record tv aswell, the box is certainly capable in recording whatever is on screen.[/QUOTE]

You got that right

yeah, with most ppl gaming only takes a small segment of their lives so they literally will go on marketing and word of mouth from ppl who also go on marketing.

God, these ppl could learn so much from just researching online for about 10 mins.

Consumer ignorance FTW

AND all 3 of the big players love consumer ignorance

Why would you pre-order before seeing any of the games?

or even knowing the price...

Anyway, UK and US are MS land, so not too surprising. And eBay resellers will make sure that the console launch of both bixes will be successful. Like the Wii U the post launch success will be interesting.

Why? Whats not in it for us in the UK? they led with Fifa, which is massive, if they integrate the TV with Sky sports or through Virgins cable box that will be very useful also. Nothing in the reveal seemed bad for UK gamers besides the DRM issues, which Sony sooner or later need to own up to also.

The TV features are only available at launch in the US

Final source responded. Surprised tbh.

Retailer D. Source is regional manager for SE/Lon. Says Xbox One pre-orders are ahead, but by a pretty small margin. He said that they are actually actively promoting Xbox One pre-orders in store at the moment so that will have skewed their figures towards it. The promotion ends just before E3. A different promotion will start after E3. Otherwise, pre-orders are very slow. He said he has been at the company for a very long time and this is definitely the slowest he has ever seen pre-orders for a Sony console and Xbox One is tracking behind 360 in their like for like comparison.

Xbox One is tracking ahead of PS4 in many UK stores? No surprises here.

The article doesn't say that. :p

UPDATE: Due to the apparent uproar that ensued at the use of the word "some" in the headline, we have removed it. We used the word "some" as we have only spoken to "some" retailers, not all of them. But if a less specific headline will appease readers then so be it.

They have only spoken to some retailers. Seems odd that there was an uproar on the use of the word 'some'. Not sure what's up with that.

It's also interesting to point out that the Xbox One pre-order is advertised on the front page and the video game section on Amazon.co.uk. The PS4 has no such advertisement. Pre-orders for Xbox One started earlier as well. Pre-orders for PS4 only started today and it has overtaken it.
