The reality is a mixture of both.

Demise of Xbox means less competition for PS, and the disappearance of its most direct competitor. But it does still have competition from PC and Nintendo

Triangle Strategy was an exclusive for Switch and Nintendo was the publisher in the West. Nintendo did several deals for Team Asano games, and the general rule was that games launched first on Switch and the they could come to PC after that. Some were then allowed to go to other consoles later on.

But it might be that we don't see any more of these deals, given SE's more multiplatform approach.

Nah you're spot on. Point taken. I didn't think too hard on that one but in saying that, I think in terms of exclusives for their consoles, PS1 eclipses PS5. And to be fair, they were a new console so didn't really have the companies available as 1st party so early on.

The great thing about PlayStation was that it gave 3rd parties a chance to shine on a console & not get overshadowed by Nintendo & Sega.

Even when 1st party PlayStation games became a big thing 3rd party games still shined on PlayStation.

What a brilliant comment. No one ever criticizes Breath of the Wild for being crossgen, because no one actually cares. It's obviously better on Switch and that's the version people care about, but Sony is held to a completely different standard because of reasons, but we know what those reasons are...

I first played TLOU P2 on PS4 Pro and I wish I had waited and played it on PS5, though at the time, it felt like a PS5 game as it was so far ahead of anything else on the PS4.

I played most of if not all of Ghost of Tsushima on PS5. The PS4 version released 115 days before PS5 launched. The PS5 directors cut didn't come at launch, but the PS4 version still ran at 60 fps on day 1.

The PS5 never had a slow year for me, because there are always games that I haven't played yet, which again is why I'm fine with remakes.

Not that I would, but I could spend the entire generation playing enhanced PS4 games that I never got around to on PS5 and I would be just fine.

Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring, and Cyberpunk 2077 are three of the biggest games of the generation and they're all crossgen, but no one actually stops to ask how well these games play on previous generations. It's just a way to slight the ps5.

3rd party exclusives were an element of the times in that porting games was much more difficult across disparate architecture. The Saturn's lack of commercial success and the N64 not having an optical disc drive.

No one has to this day has explained to me how a game being exclusive makes it more fun to play.

Symphony of the Night was released on the Saturn and that had no impact on me enjoying it on PS1.

But sure - let's take a much older example then - when FFX launched for PS2 - still noone cared that it was an upscaled PS1 engine held together by duck-tape. It was most definitely held back by it too (we even had direct comparison to Square's early PS2 games that looked substantially better in every aspect, despite being made by B-teams that had no idea what they were doing with the hw yet), and hell - in the end it wasn't even a 'permanent' PS2 exclusive (which was called out in these threads as 'the only thing that matters' too).

Or how about the other extreme - TR exclusive to X1 - except not because it was cross-gen, but noone cared about that either and just focused on the negative aspect of platform exclusivity. Somehow being on older console (that WAS a proper generational leap behind) didn't negate exclusivity for that example or 'held the game back'.

Basically - my point is (I said it in another thread) - people care about perception of brand to console attachment, not exclusivity pedantics.
BOTW was associated to the Switch same way FFX, GTA3, MGS2 were (and still are) seen as PS2 IPs. And the list of such examples is long. Permanent exclusives in particular are generally pretty niche and rare outside of Nintendo consoles - and even there the number is getting diminishingly smaller.

It runs at dynamic 4K60 (minimum 1440p) on PS5

It's what I love- seeing Phil Spencer claim that by having "his" games on more devices means that games will be better! How in the fuck do you come to that conclusion? More games on more devices means better games?! Please tell that to Nintendo who have consistently made the greatest games of all time and only releasing them on Nintendo consoles exclusively!

All I wish for is that Sony don't completely abandon their Japanese roots. They've lost those unique games that made them special pre ps4 days. It's not all about last of us, uncharted, god of war, horizon etc…

That's because 1st party output is an incentive to buy Playstation over other systems, not the incentive.

Most people play 3rd party on PS and Xbox.

Both things can be true. People are just playing more multiplat, free games and GAAS games. And the cost of a decent PC also skyrocked those last few years. I know families that have a PS5 to play... Fornite on their couch. Convenient, easy and not expensive (particularly in US).

Yes but 3rd parties weren't as good as they are this+last gen. 3rd party games have carried gaming lately. This gen and last gen 3rd party is elite so there isn't so much pressure. Plus games being console exclusive like Wukong, SH2, BG3, Rebirth, even for a short time, make the console really the only option for any knowledgeable gamer. It is selling so well because there is no other real option for a real gamer besides PS5 and PC and because PS5 is more convenient and much cheaper, it is mainly in direct competition with only the PC. Xbox is becoming even more irrelevant than ever and Nintendo is doing their own thing with their own audience and appeal, so what else would they buy?

Sony is spending more on gaas this gen than SP because they know their audience has changed and they're adapting. SP was the focus during PS4 even if some of us feel they got a little too focused on a particular genre of SP.
