He was also young and impetuous. Remember when he first goes to war, he didn't want the throne at all. He wasn't interested in it. He was only interested in his father.
Then he won a couple of victories, and he loses his father. At that point, he calls his banner men, and they basically place the King in the North crown on his head. He just didn't decline it, possibly due to his youth and inexperience. And possibly because he may have started to feel that he was in control of the war.

He sent Catelyn to negotiate with Renly. Stannis had the smallest army out of all the kings, Renly had by far the largest. Also, Stannis would have never accepted Robb ruling an independent north; Stannis wanted a united seven kingdoms with him on the throne. He wouldn't settle for anything less. And Robb was ultimately beholden to his lords, who would never accept him bowing to a new king (even if it was Stannis).

I'm just hoping for an ending where Stannis and Arya joint-kill Joffrey somehow. There would be nothing better.

I might, I don't like the red coat lady though. I may have to end up rooting for the Lannisters even though Arya is my favorite character on the show and I want Arya to get her vengeance.
Just because the Lannister's are now the only family that wins wars and gets shit done within the real world, without appeals to supernatural hocus pocus. That stuff bores me, although I did like the shape shifting guy.

Still though, it shows people are willing to betray their authority for what they believe in/want. And Roose and his men were allied with Robb right? It'd be like right now getting Ser Loras to murder Joffrey or something.

At that point Robb didn't know Joffrey was not the legit heir. So from his perspective both Stannis and Renly were trying to usurp their nephew's throne.
Roose was more just getting in Tywins good books to make sure House Bolton survive the war due to Roose seeing the war as over. Alot of Houses on either side would do same, like if Lannisters where losing most them would have jumped ship or try to kill Tywin or Joff. Alliances are fickle in Westros and one false move can break them

I am just in shock and in awe like I've never been before watching a series. I don't post much here but man, after this I needed too.
GRRM is really a brilliant asshole. He makes us fall in love with the Starks and it's direwolfs and keeps destroying them time and time again. Wow.
And the most sick part is making Arya being there so close, and again witnessing her family being butchered. Brutal.
Even comicbookgirl19 added to this by uploading the Stark family video a few days ago, she set me up for an even bigger heartbreak.
I didn't get the feeling that Jon left Ygritte behind, it felt like he was rushing towards the wall because the eagle is going to warn Mance somehow.
Which books do I need to read to catch up to the series?

The ultimate irony will be when they are spoiled on the ending of the series by TV watchers once the show passes the books.
