Just read the Eurogamer review and this sounds like everything I've been wanting from Naughty Dog. Its the polar opposite of Uncharted 3 in terms of tone and gameplay while still keeping the good things about it.

I hope to be wrong, but after Bioshock Infinite and Dishonored (and many others, in fact), I don't trust universal praise anymore.

Just play the demo when it comes out, even if people are saying it may not be a great representation of the game (Uncharted's demo wasn't either).

What I find so annoying about these "perfect" games, is that after a month or so, the criticisms start coming in from all the sites that previously said it was perfect. Recent example for this is Bioshock Infinite. Pretty much NO ONE spoke of the combat being bad as far as I can remember, outside, I think, Marcus Beer in his Annoyed Gamer show. So when the big sales boom is supposed to be (first month or so) they'll keep their traps shut and praise it into the heavens and after a month or some time after, it's suddenly a "trainwreck" of a game.

Having said that, I don't know how it will be with the Last of us, but it wouldn't surprise me to see the same pattern.

Getting a bunch of 10s doesn't mean anything. Uncharted 2 got great scores without being a good game. All you need is the right balance of exclusivity and pre-release hype, while attempting to be "deep" with a tacked on story that doesn't suit your gameplay. Bioshock did it just a few months ago. If you have the right budget it's pretty easy to get the press to cum all over your games.
Yeah, Uncharted has always been super dull to me despite all the rave reviews, so I'm still a bit cautious about TLoU. Haven't really enjoyed any of Naughty Dog's games since like...Crash 2 probably.

Still, this seems interesting and far removed from Uncharted, so I'm looking forward to playing it.

One of the worst game of the generation?

C'mon now, there's no need for massive hyperbole. It's impossible to take you seriously after reading this.

Worst games I've played . Not worst in general.

I really have nothing good to say about Bioshock. It was just walking around a world, waiting for enemies to spawn and then killing them while some kawaii girl with big eyes threw ammo at you and looked weak and defenseless when you spoke to her. Nothing about it was fun, but it's the ultimate example of what video game reviews want games to be; something they can praise for it's "art" and graphics rather than focusing on what actually makes a game fun to play.

The Last of Us vs. Bioshock Infinite for Game of the Year. The battle is on and it's gonna be ugly.

Both involve grizzled middle-aged men escorting young, innocent but smart and resourceful girls through a harsh but beautiful apocalyptic environment with a mind bending twist at the end.

I hope this becomes a new COD trend. Ever game is about bad fathers and their surrogate daughters through whom they try to make amends.

You can understand why scoring is my least favorite part of my job. I am harsh. We have a 10 point scale, after all, and I try to use it. Worthwhile games can exist in a range outside of the top 1%. I have given my personal Game of the Year an 8.5 on three separate occasions (Dead Rising 2, Terraria, and Ratchet: Crack in Time), so you can see how much value I put on 8-range games.

The Last of Us didn't earn a 9 (or higher) in my eyes. However, it's still an incredible experience.

That's entirely fair.

Too many people get worked up over review scores.

I think that bashing to that extent is a bit much, but I did feel pretty similarly about Bioshock. Despite everything, it just wasn't very fun to play and I found it a chore to play more than anything. In the end, we need to realize that tastes are personal, and not every game can appeal to everyone's tastes. Reviews are entirely subjective, and that's okay.

So, should I buy this game? :)
Great scores all around, but for some reason I'm not really hyped. Maybe because I happened to miss most info in the media. But that's good I guess. I will be able to play it with a clear mind.

You're reading it? Yay! I spent a lot of time writing that and was happy with how it turned out. Scoring doesn't matter. If what I describe sounds interesting, buy it immediately. If it sounds lame, pass. Simple as that.

It's really well written and, more than the what I've seen of the other reviews, compels me to get it.

I was on the fence since I'm not a huge Naughty Dog fan, especially in comparison to most on this forum, but I think it's pushed me over the edge.

OMG at these scores/reviews. How to end PS3 with a bang!

Naughty GODS.

Edit: has PS4 been added to the Polygon's menu or is there still only XBox One?

Well I am always skeptical about reviews.

* I mean, GTAIV PS3 gets 98% on Metacritic while it's a decent game at best.

* With the benefit of hindsight, Eurogamer's 8 was a very deserved score for Uncharted 3, while being a good game, wasn't nearly as good as Uncharted 2

The lowest review for GTAIV is from GamerNode, the gave it 87%. Therefore it was my favorite game review site but they don't give scores anymore and their site isn't as good anymore.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Now I can't care any less about review scores BUT with that 7.5 amidst the higher scores, is there an ulterior motives here? I see people claiming being sponsored by MS/Xbox so is there reason to call bullshit? I mean, can't Naughty Dog investigate, are there laws being broke or is this standard practice?

Like I said, I don't care. I'm all over it. But the claims here make me think something more "dirty" is at play.

Laws being broken? What the fuck?

7? Point 5?! Are you serious? Did you not see the Naughty Dog logo on the box? Do I need to remind you what these guys have made? Uncharted? Crash Bandicoot? JAK & FREAKIN' DAXTER? *takes deep breath* And you have the audacity to give what many are calling the Citizen Kane of video games a mere 7.5?! For no other reason than going against the grain and to increase your indie cred by giving a game with a budget of over $300 a below average score. For shame, Polygon. These guys were also funded by Micro$oft if you didn't know so if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...

To my fellow IT managers: Add Polygon to your company's blacklist. They do not deserve the clicks. To those not in IT: block it on your home network or speak with whoever is in charge of your IT department and tell them that Polygon is Malware. >:)

That's great. But is this really the best way to try and make a name for yourself?

You know when I played Soul Calibur it immediately struck me that it was a bit better than GTAIV. But then I played the PS3 version and the shitty framerate totally won me over.

LOL, after all the shit Polygon has pulled in the past they will never be considered "legit"

But that's exactly why they do it. If they become notorious for going against the grain and riling people up then people will always look to them for a reaction. It's a notoriety that draws attention.

Can't believe it got 10's from Destructoid, Edge and Eurogamer. Damn.
Those are the three sites I generally trust for well written, honest reviews. I look forward to reading them later.

Canis lupus, if any of the reviews contain spoilers could you put a 'Spoilers' warning beside their score in the OP?

I never understood the point of review scores. I wish more sites would just review the game and not place some nebulous score at the end of their review. Just give me your opinion on the pros and cons of the game.

I couldn't agree more. The gameplay was beyond boring but I liked the story and setting

I don't think there are any areas with 'waves' of enemies, though. They certainly weren't in the game I played. Do some of the enemies that are there suffer from the bullet sponge syndrome that Uncharted is famous for? Yes. But waves of enemies? Not really.

There is a wave place, it's in the latter half of the game (late chapter 9 if I remember correctly)

Does the Sessler Rev3 review have any spoilers. Really want to hear what he has to say about the game.

Nope, no spoilers!

Not really. Shows off some nice scenes, but nothing we haven't already seen similar to in trailers. It is violent though, very lol.

Sessler already spoiled me noooooooooooooooooooooo.

So does Sessler's review have spoilers or not? I'd really like to watch it.

Those scores aren't really that great. It didn't get an 11/10 like UC2 did, so you should just pass...

/sarcasm.

Dude GET A PS3!!!

I didn't hear any hyperbole from him in this review on that level.

It doesn't seem like he was trying to flex his English Lit BA in this review as much as the BI one.

"fallacy of anthropocentricism"

It's not Bioshock Infinite levels of crazy but he's still busting out odd vocabulary :)

Or, you know, he just didn't like it as much.

Probably that.

Despite my dislike for Polygon in general, a lot of the glowing reviews for Last of Us do point out that this game definitely wont be for everyone (Adam Sessler even states he wouldn't recommend it just anyone). The Polygon reviewer unfortunately probably falls into that category.

Out of morbid curiosity, what have been your favourite games this gen?

About 1% of people on here have actually played it.

So far all the reviewers agree it is good, some just like it less than others. In the weeks to come I would bet public opinion will agree - no way will everyone love every bit of the game, I predict a minority will even hate it.

Check out the comment on Bioshock Infinite. Gushing reviews got everyone in a tissy, any complaints were shouted down - only once it had been out a week did any range of opinion happen and discussion was achieved.
