Gamespot gave it an 8.0 and still got complaints. Hell, the reviewer is a poster here. I get the whole Polygon debacle, but the fact is people will have meltdowns over a 7.5 regardless of who it is issued by, most of the time without even reading the reasoning.

Sure, but thats not MY issue here. I dont care who else you are talking about. I just mentioned that Polygon currently has no credibility whatsoever and their opinion is deservedly put down as laughable and worth "less" than any other reviewing website.

I obviously can't speak about TLoU, but what was it about Bioshock's gameiness that stood out like a sore thumb?

The parts where you had to shoot a gun at endless waves of badguys.

If Gamespot gave it a 7.5 people would complain, but in regards to Polygon it just smells. Its their fault for trying to be a credible reviewing outlet while being FUNDED by Microsoft. That smell is something they'll need to live with until the end of time.

Not to mention the SimCity reviewing fiasco.

Game mechanic issues breaking the immersion of a game, like enemies not noticing an AI character standing in the open or ignoring dead bodies, is something which I can understand being subjective in how it might bother different people. With a game that has such a strong setting I imagine it might be even more noticeable than a game without a strong setting. Both the Polygon and Gamespot reviews make it sound within the text of the review like it is a game that's is a unique experience regardless of what issues they may have had. I felt both of those reviews explained their positions well.

That is the vibe I am getting from the other reviews. The problem is nothing in the + column overcomes the "linear" part for me. I want a definite opinion on the "waves" issue once gaf gets this. Waves + linear = I'm out personally

I like both types of games. I think this falls in the "movie" type game, just like the Uncharted series, it seems to have more open spaces but I think it funnels you into the same path anyways.

This is not Skyrim/Far Cry 3, and I love those games too.

But I see what you mean, playing only linear games gets real boring to me. But if you are gonna pick one linar TPS to play, this seems to be it based on scores.

I don't know for sure and I'm obviously speaking from a position of ignorance but this is what I think is going on. No one wants to be the reviewer giving a $100 million game with a 5 year development cycle less than an 8. But again, I don't know what the circumstances are so I can't say for sure.

That's why i've avoided all reviews except for Sessler's (since I knew he wouldn't spoil it). There seems to always be someone that slips in something that they shouldn't, and you never know which review it'll be...but you know it's going to be somewhere.

Saw this on your Twitter, christ. Not linking to the Polygon review is really one of the pettiest things I've ever seen on this forum, and that's saying a lot.

I was updating the missing links. FYI 3 outlets that gave a 10/10 also didn't have a link, cut the conspiracy bullshit.

Linearity is not a valid criticism of games though. It is an entirely valid gameplay type.

A review is just an opinion. If I would review a game, I would certainly knock down the score if the game had a linear design, since in my opinion that is stale and not very fun anymore.
