Planetside 2 and DC Universe Online coming to PS4

Ugh no. According to your logic (again) the move from CELL to Jaguar is a complete downgrade, since CELL or even 360's CPU are FLOPS monsters compared to Jaguars. FLOPS is a more relevant spec for GPUs than CPUs.

Jaguars are good at general purpose code, and that's why FLOPS-heavy CPUs were thrown out in favor of the Jaguar for the consoles.

From Xenos is not a downgrade, but from CELL in Single-precision it is downgrade, thats a fact. In double precision next-gen CPUs are twice as fast.
The point is, that most of SP from SPUs in CELL were used for graphics rendering, because RSX needed help, but now GPU wont need Jaguar cores help, so they will just focus on CPU based stuff. Also there is hardware for data movement, audio rendering and compression and decompression to eliminate that overhead from CPU in comparison to current gen platforms [data decompression reserved one whole core from Xenos in PGR 3]
What will be even more surprising for You, that now PS4 GPU will help Jaguars with CPU tasks, because of compute. Of course it will lower graphical capabilities in long run , cause You render or compute, but it will happen in few years.

No, that was PC, of course. They filmed this a few days ago with my outfit and some others :)

I'm glad they've announced it's coming but I'm concerned about how this will end up panning out. This is an extremely heavily CPU bound game. The weak jaguar cores may mean they'll need to lower the playercount and thus segregate PC and console players, and splitting online communities is always detrimental to a game no matter in what fashion. As well as that, PS2 currently has 2gb+ updates (not necessarily additive the game has only grown 3gb since launch, to 12gb) delivered on a two week cadence and 40mb+ patches scattered throughout, will the PS network and console player base be accepting of that? The game is ever evolving and big new features are always being added. If that has to be restricted by the console then that would again be detrimental to the game. Hopefully they have answers at E3.
Smedley already confirmed separate servers. As for the patch sizes, DCUO's used to be around the same size, but they were monthly instead with hotfixes in between and you download them in game directly from SOE's servers instead of PSN's.

What could negatively affect the PC version is they could start holding back PC patches so they can have parity between both versions. It might not be too big of a deal though if their release schedule window slows down to a monthly schedule instead of every 2 weeks.

If I can bring my char over from PC, I'll be all over this. Hell, if I end up getting a PS4, I'll be all over this no matter what. PlanetSide 2 is god-tier.

For those interested, here's a collection of some shots I've taken in PS2 showing off some of the visuals (more in this gallery link)

Here's the 3 continents currently in the game

They have a swampy continent and a smaller scale ice continent coming this year, with much more later

That's fine and all, but that wasn't my point. I only brought up current-gen consoles' CPUs to use as an example of why your FLOPS-based view on judging CPU performance is misleading.

You and I both know that any decent gaming PC probably has a CPU that demolishes PS4's CPU. My point was simply that judging CPU performance on FLOPS alone is just wrong.

Now, getting back on-topic, the whole reason I brought this CPU subject up is because I don't know what downgrades will have to be put into effect in the PS4 version compared to the PC version. And what the optimizations entail for the PC version, as well. That's all. I will be glad if they finally move shadow rendering to the GPU. If you even want the game to look remotely good, dynamic shadows are a must. And the only way I can see them achieving this on the PS4 is by offloading it to the GPU since the CPU is weak. Player count may also be decreased on the PS4 version, and perhaps draw distance, as well. But we will see. I'd love to be surprised. I'm just hoping for significant performance upgrades to the game.

I don't own a PS3, never was interested in getting one. I purchased a PS2 on release day and with every announcement like this, my opinion on buying a PS4 becomes a little more positive. It sure will be interesting next week to see what is offered and which hype has a real chance of being fact and which is just BS from both Sony and MS.

Draw distance isn't a factor when people 50m from you disappear because you've reached the maximum player count. Taking a tech plant or some other large, open base with 100+ fellow VS always has me running at 30fps. The graphics are quite scalable, but the CPU side isn't so much. A quick google search of your CPU and PS2 shows many people complaining about a bottleneck.

Also, that draw distance reduction sucks when you're flying a galaxy and an enemy aircraft pops in out of no where.

@ThreePiMatt: A 3770 is probably an order of magnitude more powerful than the PS4's Jaguar CPU.

I've got a 3770k and I STILL get slaughtered framerate wise with a GTX 670, I cap out around 45 FPS.

I have a 7970 and have everything on high minus motion blur and shadows @1440p. When you hit Alt+F does it say whether you're GPU or CPU limited?

I wonder how PS2 is gonna play via remote play on Vita. I bet the PC version uses a gazillion buttons like all MMOs? That said, if it works, this could be enough to get me to buy a PS4.

I have a 2500k and GTX 670... and my FPS is fine.

Wait, is the game installed on an SSD? If not, that will help.

I haven't played Planetside 2, but from what I've seen of it, if this launches with PS4 and is the same as the PC version, then it could be the perfect fit. It would be the perfect showcase for everything that's possible on the PS4 but not the PS3:

-Free-to-play, lowering the barrier of entry to everyone who buys a PS4
-Next-gen graphics
-Battles of a scale beyond what's possible on current consoles

Technically, Warframe and War Thunder could fit similarly well.

Do you guys think Planetside 2 moving to a console at launch would have a big impact on console gaming as a whole?

I just installed PS2 on my laptop today (runs nicely on low or almost low custom settings) cause ve always wanted to play it and the announcement got me psyched...anyway...

It should be totally mappable to a DS4, not to much else going on in this than in BF3.

Dig the game, its like Warhawk all growns up.

I really can't think of too many reasons why these games shouldn't come preloaded on PS4's. They're free to play, they're SOE, and I know for a fact that at least PS2 is a great game. Puting them on every hard drive would circumvent the millions in marketing it would take to be nearly as effective. Plus, it would save server traffic and download times.

So have they said anything about being able to use the same character on both PC and PS4? I'm finishing up a PC this weekend and I will totally jump in and start playing there before it comes out on PS4

PS2 is so amazing.

EDIT: Just watched that trailer. Nobody talks like that LOL.

You'd be surprised. I've heard outfits in Planetside 2 that sound very much like a real unit complete with a chain of command and channel permissions.

In fact it's not that rare. When you are running 8+ squads you kind of need it.

I also play with one of the dudes whos voice is in there almost daily. He's not uptight or anything though.
