Sakurai confirms Smash trailer at E3 direct!

If anyone has any really good questions for Sakurai - interesting questions that won't be answered during the Nintendo Direct - let me know. No guarantees, but I'll do my best to read them all.

Jason, I would appreciate it if you asked the following:

1. Sakurai, have you been aware of the modding community that developed and grew from Brawl? If so, has any of that given you ideas on what fans want for Smash 4?

2. How do you feel about the competitive community now? Has your opinion changed since 2008?

3. What is your "vision" for this new Smash? For Melee it was focused on hardcore players. For Brawl it was focused on accessibility and casual gamers, the "everyone can win" idea. What is it now? Is it a mix of both?

4. You've made some early statements about the roster not exceeding what Brawl's roster count was. Are you going to be cutting some characters in order to introduce new ones? And if so, why? Fans really liked Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros. Melee and were extremely disappointed he was cut in the transition to Brawl. Is there any particular good reason why characters like him get cut? What's the decision process going into Smash 4 for the roster?

And finally, the best question to ask him that I want to know.

5. Are you aware your game, Super Smash Bros. Melee, is at the biggest fighting game tournament this year, EVO 2013? How do you feel about having one of your games be in the lineup this year and are you going to watch it? Are you surprised by how much staying power Super Smash Bros. Melee has had?

You don't have to ask all of those if you feel they aren't related to Smash 4 but I'm really curious about how much he stays in touch with what goes on with his games after they're released or how he feels about some of this stuff. I hope this post doesn't get overlooked, thanks!

Lets GO!!!!

So awesome.

Well, technically...
Sheik is in SS
. Different character, of course, but still. Ganondorf could just be dropped considering he's hardly relevant right now, and was just a Captain Falcon clone anyway. There's plenty of Zelda characters to pool from.

Ganondorf will pretty much always be relevant, thanks to his relation to the mythos and overall popularity. Wouldn't be surprised if he shows up again in some way in the new 3D Zelda for Wii U.

Like I said before, my main thing is seeing if LTTP2 might possibly shake things up, such that Toon Link is replaced by LTTP Link and GANON (Big Blue Boar with the Trident) finally gets in.

And these are all good questions.

If anything the only thing I would add on to contribute is:

6. It's clear that Pokemon has had no problem embracing its competitive aspect, without jeopardizing the game's enjoyment for other players. The Pokemon Company even has its own tournaments and events. Do you think it's time for Smash to follow suit?

My question is, what are they gonna do with Ganondorf and Sheik this time around? Link and Zelda are most likely going to have their Skyward Sword designs this time around, but what of them? Neither of them would really translate well to the SS art style, unless this game gives everyone a unique design like Melee did, which I would not complain about.

Sakurai got Zelda's team to give him a Twilight Princess Sheik design last time. He might attempt to do the same thing here, just make new designs for Sheik and Ganondorf following Skyward Sword's style. In fact, I think Sheik staying in Brawl pretty much shows his position regarding these issues. The Smash Bros versions of the characters might receive some tweaks due to changes in the original series, but he isn't going to turn them into completely different characters due to that.

I kind of hope not. Volnutt would be my personal preference, but barring that MM7 style would fit better with Super Smash Bros. X would be amazing, Zero even better... but I wouldn't think either of those 2 would be a real option.
Why? Didn't Capcom opt to use Zero in MvsC3 instead of Mega Man?

If this is going to be similar with the first Brawl trailer we can expect some big reveal at the end. Probably Bayonetta but I would want something as Earth shattering as Solid Snake's announcement. I wish for Mega Man, that would be huge if it was him.

That would be fucking awesome if he did. I hope we get some awesome random characters once again. And kind of hoping Sonic is back again. Maybe even bring in Knuckles too.

Knuckles

* Laughs evily *

Oh ho ho ho.

I am gonna go with side kick or the guy was an assist trophy last time.

what the fuck?
No.

As awesome as the X series was, it was mostly on Sony, I wouldn't expect X or Zero (at least, X generation Zero) because of it.

I don't think 8-bit mega man because Sakurai is very particular about artstyles overall matching even if the characters themselves are very different. It's why toon link in Brawl has tons of added details to his outfit and Mario wears denim. You could say game and watch, but even he is very detailed for being essentially a black shaped blob.

OH, THIS GONNA BE GLORIOUS.

Damn, I wonder if we'll see both the WiiU and 3DS versions.

If we can only see one I hope we see the 3DS one, I'm really interested to see what they'll do with it. They said it'd be slightly different and the console games have all been evolutions of the previous title.

Lucina/Chrom don't replace Ike. Keep all the characters just add more dammit.
Megaman from Battle Network. He is the best and also makes the most sense since his art style matches Sakurai and BN was Nintendo only.

I've always felt Ganondorf's move set should be magic based, not sword based. It would be way more interesting. I don't really think he needs to be able to take out his sword; the main reason people wanted it is because the model has been in both Smash games he's appeared in yet they don't have him use it.

Honestly, the whole Ganondorf w/sword stuff mostly spawned because the sword that appeared in Melee looked fucking badass and made you want to be able to use it. But the sword in Brawl pales in comparison and lacks... well, any real sign of badassedry, you know?

I mean, yes, it's obvious he should have access to the sword but I think magic based with a pinch of his melee attacks (like his Forward Air from Melee) would make him a really unique character Smash hasn't had yet. More offensive based magic special moves than Zelda's more defensive ones, you know? It would make a lot of sense... and add a style that's not really in the game.

Knuckles needs retribution after having a garbage moveset in Sonic Battle.

Speaking of which, Sonic's special moves need to be completely redone.

Cause what I want is 100 fighters, most of which are clones, and the game being completely unbalanced because they couldn't easily do so in their alotted time...

Also F* you... No BN Mega Man.

I just posted my Roster prediction and what I'm thinking for Zelda characters is use Skyward Sword characters with Impa as the new Sheik but have OoT based "special costumes"

Ghirahim should be a new character his moveset potential is just too good to pass up. I see Demise a big heavy version and you can throw in an OoT/TP Ganon costume for him, and then maybe throw in "Classic Ganondorf" with his Falcon clone moveset.

No 3rd party characters unless they're specifically attached to Nintendo. I'd be okay with Phoenix, Sonic and Professor Layton, but Snake shouldn't be featured.

I hope not, even If I will buy the 3DS version in the future, I dont give a shit of seeing it at this E3. I want to see a reveal trailer just like the Brawl one, in all of its HD glory, and what are they doing for sprucing up the grpahics.
If they show both and it doesnt take time of the WiiU reveal, I dont mind then.

Man, after reading through a couple of pages of this thread, I'm pretty surprised to see how hype-frenzied everyone seems to be even though we all know how Brawl turned out. Might want to dial those expectations down a little bit, guys.

Brawl turned out to be the most critically acclaimed in the series. It also sold the best.

Believe.

Realistically though, Trailer will have the original smashers minus the 4 secret characters, and on top of that I expect sonic, bayonetta, and Devil Jin or something... I mean Pacman >_>

Maybe Snake too (confirming a MGS game for Wii U)... nah

Nothing will come close to melee. But Brawl was still pretty good as its own thing.

wat?

While going with BN isn't a bad idea, I'd still say going with Classic would be the best for sheer reverence and being WAYYY more recognizable world-wide.

I beg to differ. Battle Network is really recognizable to the young adult crowd. He would also pull in more of the anime crowd. Plus his battle style would be really unique with the buster and the sword. They can also do a chip based battle style.

Melee gameplay......oh how I miss thee. That's what's keeping my hype for this reveal set in very humble parameters.

That's how I am atm. I'm a little jaded after Brawl. To be frank, as long as they actually get rid of the ability to cancel hitstun with an air dodge (that's what the issue was, hitstun was actually the same as Melee), the game will instantly be 100x better than Brawl for me.

Otherwise, if it looks like they're keeping that then I'm not really interested.

Here's who I hope is in the game:

There's not really any more characters I have a strong interest in seeing playable. Brawl's roster feels "complete" to me and as long as every character comes back, I'll be satisfied.

Also one more thing. No more Links! I'm sick of all the Link's ! They waste a good spot for another Metroid character. There is enough Zelda character without Link clones.

Oh god... sales argument + reviews in one post. I feel like I should abandon this thread asap because it's gonna get ugly. :x

What's wrong with what I said? Argument, those are facts you can look up. Is this really gonna be your response. If so, thanks for not adding anything to the discussion.

That's fine, pray for it to be like Melee as much as you want. But if someone claims Brawl is a terrible game and their only argument is that it wasn't enough like Melee, I will be the first one to tell them they have a shit argument.

Almost every time someone says Brawl is terrible, they back it with the Melee argument. The game is great fun, like all the others in the series.
