Apparently you should only focus on something that's popular worldwide. Catering to one specific market, even if it is by far the biggest market for gaming, is a bad thing. I can understand the complaint that 400 million for apps etc is a bad thing, but to suggest that they shouldnt focus on something simply because it's only popular in the US is just not very bright.

I am a complete football and soccer novice, know jack shit about either. Is it possible they could do something similar in Europe?

The NFL is desperate to spread into Europe, but I doubt MS would spend money to help them do that. The NFL contract has to be mainly for the US. Localized content is a great thing if the region you're doing it in is as huge as Europe or in this case the US. Some people think everything a console offers should be worldwide. That's not feasible or smart. But it also shouldnt mean that MS ignores finding good content for those other regions.

With Football? If they did, it would be pretty big news over here. Football to Europe is what NFL is to the US.

I just hope they don't waste another $400m trying the same thing in Europe.

The problem is that Europe has many different football leagues, biggest ones being La Liga (Spain), Serie A (Italy) and Premier League (England) as well as the Bundensliga (Germany) is pretty popular. The issue is that these operate independently from one another, so MS would need to pay up to each of them (or just one or 2 of them). Its not like in the US where the NFL, NBA, MLB etc rule the whole sport they represent with a iron fist. It would end up costing them a fuck ton more to cover all these and gain the same effect as just doing this with the NFL

And then there is the language barrier as well as different countries with literally tens of thousands of TV channels

A better idea is to just really improve Xbox Live here, its really lackluster, unbelievably so, the US Live is amazing, just seeing the stuff you guys get is mouth watering.

Nothing is as "uniform" -- there might be logistical considerations.

You mean because of all the countries involved?

I meant more football than ... us football, not sure europeans will embrace NFL when we have a popular alternative already.

sorry for pointing out a thread people might have missed since no once had mentioned these relevant news in the Microsoft E3 Conference thread

keep walking with those blinders on people...
Friendly advice if you get banned as a junior it's permanent so watch the attitude

Countries, languages, networks, and leagues. Into's post above nails it.

Well obviously but to me $400 million for what they showed is a complete joke.

if they don't offer cheaper solution to Red Zone AT LEAST, or NFL ticket, then for me I can't see me using it but will have to see how it's implemented while I'm watching games... I can get a lot of info from DirecTV too but it's slow and cumbersome... so I use my laptop or phone while watching TV.

IF X1 makes that hella easy then maybe they have something

I guarantee you if MS put $400 million into something Japanese only and not Football, you'd be complaining about it. Especially from what we've seen so far with MS. You're only arguing it's a good thing because you happen to be a fan and it's catering to your needs.

Thanks.

I guess at the least they should focus on UK first given they have a foothold here. (currently anyway ...)

It would be badass of a move, Brazil are eager for soccer too, but here there are big stakeholders monopolizing our championships rights, so IF they did bring the UK soccer through LIVE it would be colossal.

hehe. I'm not firing on all cylinders today.

Your post quality has decreased dramatically since those Jet Force Gemini rumours. Have you been drinking?

$400 mill on Japanese games lol they could buy SE for that right??

Can you imagine the meltdowns?

Microsoft have invested a metric shitton for Xbox One in Japan already though. New studio built from scratch. Expanding headquarters and taking on boatloads of staff. Games, of course. These things all add up.

It's a shame Microsoft have to invest in other things, but at the same time it's hard to be upset when they sink $1 billion into games alone.

So you're only interested if you can post bad news? lol There is absolutely no point in shitting up this thread with inconsequential news with the aim being just to shit on the X1. Plenty of other threads you can do that in.

no, I have done other posts as well but those probably do not count....

you can also find me making "negative" posts sometimes in the Sony thread as well. Mostly considering their strange love for and faith in Killzone or Squaresoft games as system sellers or just saying the PS4 still has no interesting launch games as well (they really do not, yet).

I would have posted a similar post in the E3 sony thread if I noticed the "news" were not discussed or mentioned at all.

It's hard to argue with someone who supports $400 million into Football with someone with a Football avatar.

How many millions did Microsoft invest in Japan at the start of the 360? Many many millions. I didn't have a problem with that despite hating JRPGs. And if you read back, you'd see that I think the way they're using their 400 million is stupid. I'm also saying that spending a lot of money for content only valuable to one market is a good thing if that market is huge.

I think it's important to note that this is more of an NFL - Microsoft deal, not just an NFL - Xbox deal. From a games point of view it could be considered a waste of money, but the deal also includes using other MS technology, such as using Surface tablets on the sidelines etc..

Add in the advertisements for MS product that will likely be taking place, and it might not be such a bad investment as it first appears.

If there is placed advertisement then yes a trip worthwhile.

Alright, that actually is a better deal then.

Hehe, let's just say I haven't taken it very well...

Seriously, I'm just real tired. State of Decay is destroying me. Every waking minute is focused on it. It's insane. I haven't been this enamoured with a game since Halo 2 MP.

Okay, now that makes a lot of sense and I guess it could seen as a pretty good investment if you factor everything in.

Hastily thrown together in a minute or so...

It's a seriously amazing game, not sure if I'd say it's the best XBLA game ever but damn if it doesn't come close.

Nice, good to see Fable get some recognition.

It really is, I'd say it's easily one of the best games on XBLA. It's fast becoming one my games of the generation. I honestly still cannot believe someone created the zombie game I've been yearning for since first playing Dead Rising 1. Still blows me mind.

And with its excellent sales, I hope MS do the right thing and allow Undead Labs as much freedom as they need to patch the game, release additional modes/content and perhaps even fund a next gen version after UDL have finished the PC version.

Ohh I missed this tweet by Phil;

@HugodrAndrade E3 show is all games but we'll still have more exclusives to announce post E3. I expect GamesCom to be a good event.

Looking forward to that.

Fairly sure the old mini will happen. They need to make it disc based though for it to have real return. Especially has some form for BC.

Another 25 million would take a mini and price drop. Wish they would drop it next week like the slim.

Mini will be DD only. Makes it far easier to sell them to One owners and potential one owners.

Also gives them more dosh when many replace much of their disc based 360 library with downloads like I most likely will.

Thinking the same, but a disc would be nice. They need to bring those DD titles down and the amount of them way up. Hook that baby into the one and ready to go.

Which countries would that be? As far as I know football is mostly irrelevant outside of the US but I could be wrong.

You're not wrong. It's a predominantly a North American sport despite their attempts to bring it to Europe and Asia. The fact that it generates 9 billion dollars a year in one region is exactly why saying they shouldn't partner with the NFL is so wrong.

In the same way cricket and soccer are viewed in the US.

Soccer is far more popular in the US than the NFL is in any other country. Except maybe Afghanistan due to all the service men and women stationed there.

The NFL deal looks like a Microsoft company deal. Not just Xbox division deal.

So I don't know how much of that money we can say would have went to game funding, anyway.

If they can put a blanket price across all games on demand at launch time as a "special" they will rake in cash like there's no tomorrow. I think that would be a good strategy.

Then as the 360 winds down, stagger he specials to get more and more people over.

I would literally replace my entire collection if that were the case. Or not since it would allow disc based BC on One anyway.

The NFL is huge. But how does offering me an app that shows scores and stats entice me to buy your console? I can get all of that on my phone, tablet etc. What are Microsoft getting for that 400 million dollar partnership other than the right to call themselves an NFL partner and provide some lame apps you can view while watching a game?

Yup the NFL is huge and the deal MS placed far more reaching than a lame app. The whole I can do this now on my tablet, PC is the same argument people used when MS introduced Netflix streaming to consoles. In this case it's irrelevant, because they are using Smart Glass as well as the console.

I'm a fan of football and fantasy sports. No way has anyone done anything where I'm watching the game, and my fantasy stuff is updating in realtime, and I can cut to the highlight of my player scoring etc. All the while skyping with buddies at the same time on the same screen. Far from lame in my opinion.

Nobody is claiming it's a system seller in itself, but hey when I own one I'm definately going to use the capabilities.

My original point is that there are many ways other than games to promote your console. It was gaming new tht Sony was promoting the PS4 at the Champions League. But, we are talking 5 years of promo for Xbox One. The NFL is talking referees with Xbox logos and the entire league using Surface tablets. Plus the whole official partner thing that will probably include other advertising. Sounds like 80 million a year well spent to me.

You could also argue that it's going to be profitable for them which leads to more money being available for games. Whether that's actually the case? who knows.
