Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

So does this also mean if you get banned you will lose all your games?

Im sure it does.

Look at those folks at the EA forums. When they got banned, their EA accounts did as well, so when they logged into their PS360 games, they couldnt play or say their Origin titles.

On PS3, if they ban you on PS Home (social service for being an ass or cussing on text chat), then your PSN downloads are un-accessible for whatever time period the ban was for. Sometimes perma ban if you keep getting banned just like GAF.

So yea this is not good for XB1 owners since MS tends to ban members here and there on mistake. Oh you bought the new Halo from the store before release date and MS saw that on your list? You get banned because they think you probably pirated the game. And then what do you do with your XB1 when you cant log in and cant even play your single player games since you cant connect every 24 hours!

Uh, what? Did I say it's fantastic? No. But we expected always online, no used games period, no loaning.

Why don't you chill out a bit.

I just found it amusing how you are so enamored with Microsoft that you were somehow able to put a positive spin on this nonsense.

No, people who have 40 posts over 3 years, all of them either doing damage control for one company or spreading negativity about the products of its competitors are shills.

Even the worst kind of fanboy at least posts about his favourite game some time. Or about his dog in OT. Or whatever. Because he is a real person.

What if your dog is the Windows phone?

Just talked to two non-GAFfer who were unaware about all of this and both of their replies were, "Oh, I don't care about that stuff."

Fuck it.

A lot of my friends are the same way. They don't buy gaming devices. They use a PC (to game).

It's annoying being a fan and listening to the casual person talk about their casual experience.. I also hate being called a "collector". lol That's a load of BS too. I just think this makes people jaded. There are enough jaded people who claim they "play" video games. You really have to be a fan and do what's best for you.

What the XBox One is doing isn't good for either side. But I swear if you think about it. You're constantly paying full price. But I hate this single player crap online news. The internet is something I use on a daily basis. But I don't have to rely on it. Heck, here I thought I had another decades worth of awesome content. And its shutting itself down faster than I had thought. I swear, some gamers probably hate being considered gamers. They just want very little content anymore.

Is the tar and feathers ready?

a company man, to the bitter end

What if MS has an issue like Sony had with the PS3 where the Playstation Network was down for, what, a few weeks?

Everyone loses their games?

In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends

In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends

Quoted again in case anyone missed it. Is it just me, or does this sound like gifting a game is only an option and not a mandatory requirement?
Microsoft are kind enough to leave it to publishers who "can enable you" to use your physically purchased product as a physically purchased product. They're doing you a big favor, can't you see?

The console basically wants to be digital only/treat retail products as if they were digital - they want the best of both worlds for them, which means the worst of both worlds for consumers - as Stump's post already outlined.

That does not sound so bad actually*... There are still some quirks, like renting and selling games by yourself without a retailer that still needs sorting out, but library sharing with up to 10 people is awesome.

*Specially for those who were already thinking of going digital only.

Over 70% of Xbox 360 owners use Live. What's wrong with "24 hour check-in"?

Ooh another one.

$600 for a smartphone people do not complain.

$600 for a game / entertainment device is cheap.

"turn it around?"

Please give me a break.

The Xbox One even launched yet. The next generation has not even started.

Sony = xerox machine

From the thread about PS4 including a headset (XB1 does not)

Welcome to 2005

From the thread about Sony support of Indie devs:

Indie games not selling console. The average consumer does not even know what an "Indie games".

These guys are fun.

i've stuck to my guns and can honestly say that when EA bought out the NFL license and took away NFL2k from me that i didn't buy a single madden game since. I think i'ma have to do the same with this

Wow. Some astonishing words and ideas in there, hard to believe that I am actually reading such a thing.

I wonder who the 'approved retailers' will be outside of the US? lol. What a laugh that is.

The idea that your console ceases being a console after 24 hours of no internet is hilarious. Holy shit. Sure, on one hand that's some forward thinking (to that time where everyone has ADSL or better internet and everyone can connect their console to said ADSL or better, which I really hope isn't that far off), but anecdotally, wow. That's a massive deal-breaker for some of my friends.

Jeez, I used to work for GAME here in Aust and the idea of trying to explain these policies to customers is fucking nuts. Fuck that. Listening to the GB guys try to parse how these policies may work is indication enough that these policies still been explained properly.

Wow. Roll on E3. Boos to MS when they walk on stage incoming?

It sounds like it may just be up to publsihers (the used game thing)....meaning some people may not use it?

24hr thing still sucks....man

this was a gutpunch before E3

Truly awful. Waiting on Sony to announce something similar. Only the most amazing game line up and pricing can help dull that sour taste.

I doubt it. DRM never got struck down on music before the labels voluntarily ditched it.

DRM hasn't gotten struck down on eBooks on Kindle or Nook--current law suit is just about price fixing.

DRM hasn't gotten struck down on computer software or games.

DRM hasn't gotten struck down on digital movies.

First sale laws just haven't been applied to digital content. The courts have ruled that selling licenses rather than the content/disc is fine as the consumers are agreeing to a Terms of Service by purchasing and registering the content etc.

I don't like it at all. But that's how it stands in the US and it's unlikely console games will be something that change the courts stance on the issue.

I think we're heading to a fully digital world for these types of content where we eventually just pay for the right to access things, rather than to own copies of them. If the price is right, I personally don't mind. But the price has to be right (i.e. lower than physical goods) since I can't sell it to recoup some costs.

Wikipedia said:
However, in Europe, the European Court of Justice ruled on July 3, 2012, that it is indeed permissible to resell software licenses even if the digital good has been downloaded directly from the Internet, and that the first-sale doctrine applied whenever software was originally sold to a customer for an unlimited amount of time, as such sale involves a transfer of ownership, thus prohibiting any software maker from preventing the resale of their software by any of their legitimate owners.[3][4][5] The court requires that the previous owner must no longer be able to use the licensed software after the resale, but finds that the practical difficulties in enforcing this clause should not be an obstacle to authorizing resale, as they are also present for software which can be installed from physical supports, where the first-sale doctrine is in force.[6][7] The ruling applies to the European Union, but could indirectly find its way to North America; moreover the situation could entice publishers to offer platforms for a secondary market.[4]

Drm has nothing to do with my right to resell shit. DVD and bluray both have drm yet I can still sell that.

Sadly, this part isn't true.

We all know how boycotts like these end.

People really need to stop using that image. It's the first page of many for a community that could be entered by anyone. A group of dudes on a forum could have easily decided to jump into that community and take a screenshot to defame them or just have a laugh.

Mom: "No Joey, you're not allowed to play XBox on weeknights."
*XBox ONE switches itself on*
Joey: LOL

If people in multiplayer games can cover the mic on their Kinect, they can scream "Xbox off!" during multiplayer matches and d/c everyone but them.

Indeed, this is what happens. No security is impenetrable. No system is foolproof. There will be a day when the servers are offline, and can't be fixed quickly.

Fuck yes.
Its not even about ourselves but about console gaming as a whole. The beginning of the end if we do nothing. I will very easily boycott that abomination of a console.
I can't even imagine an amount of game awesomeness that could even make me hesitate for like a nanosecond.

Right there with you.

Thank you to the following:

Horse Armour Defenders
Purchasers of retailer specific DLC
Purchasers of Day One DLC
Purchasers of On-the-Disc DLC
Purchasers of Online Passes
The Anti-Used Games Crusaders
Anyone Who Has Paid for Xbox Live

Mission accomplished. You've given them the keys to the fucking castle!

Absolutely no one should be on board with this kind of crap. These are some pretty heavy restrictions MS is trying to force into the market place.

Another thing I imagine this stops is the ability to play games before the "official" release date. So if you manage to get your copy of Halo 35 a couple of days earlier than you should then it won't matter you won't be able to play it anyway.

Just talked to two non-GAFfer who were unaware about all of this and both of their replies were, "Oh, I don't care about that stuff."

Fuck it.

I really don't think people outside of message boards care. Not minimizing anyone's opinion, but I just don't think most care. I think people love gaming so much, they will just adjust. They will find a way to make sure they connect to the internet, they will find a way to jump through the hoops to play used games, to share games with friends, etc. That is their choice, just like it is anyone else's choice not to do those things. Doesn't make either side "bad" or anything.

Which ever side of the topic you are on, I think we can all agree this will be a generation like no other before it in terms of technology and in terms of policies.
