What if DRM is being implemented by the subtle suggestion of undercover Sega employees to sabotage Sony and Microsoft, paving the way for the Dreamcast 2???

A man can dream. I'd rather an exciting E3 than a dull one.

But, if Sony comes out with, its up to the pubs, what then?

Isn't it the same shit?

It depends on soft factors. Status quo this gen for the PS3 is that always-online DRM is allowed, but the fear of losing sales to publishers who DIDN'T has kept it from being used in anything but a couple of Capcom's PSN titles. (This is similar to how region-locking is allowed, but has only been used for P4A and a karaoke app on Japanese PSN.)

IMO Sony is likely to continue on this path, which is why they haven't been too loud about their policy. The question is whether not mandating it will lead to an ecosystem like the PS3's, where almost no one locks down because it's a competitive disadvantage.

No worries. Word of mouth will spread. Sure, a few ignorant consumers will buy "the new Xbox" based on name alone, not really knowing what they are getting themselves into, but most of them will sure as hell be pissed once they come to learn about all the draconian limitations that Microsoft has implemented. Lots of these people will return the system, and they will tell their friends, relatives and acquaintances about how much of a shit product it is. Microsoft is going to fail with this, badly. And oh man, am I dying to see it happening...
I don't have your faith.

I think some people will learn to take it, as long as they get to play their COD.

The consumer base that doesn't know right now will know shortly after getting an Xbox, that's why I'm not that worried about initial sales. The backlash is going to be huge. Yeah Microsoft could get strong sales at launch, but the more they sell the more stories they get on news channels. It'll be like the anti-Wii.

Trying to confuse everyone about the issue seems short-sighted as hell.

Not only that, but to all but the type of person who would post here, it's straight up complicated. Billy's mom and Sara's mom go black friday shopping together and get two Xbones for their kids, and pick up a game each. The kids decide to swap games for a week after they tire of them. They stick the discs in and suddenly "WHY WON'T SARA'S GAME PLAY ON MY XBOX?" This will be happening all over the country.

oh shit.

now to translate

Thanks, #4 was confusing me a bit. Wasn't sure if it was saying it's worse than it appears or there were far worse options in the works.

It would be great if Sony just put up logos of all the games coming to PS4 to negate Microsoft's buyout.

If DRM was MS idea from the get go, why do people think Sony will automatically have it? Its not like the publishes pushed this on MS. Yea some might SUPPORT it, but it doesnt mean they wont release games without it on another platform.

Holey fuckballs. I play one game session and come back to this. I don't want to read 30 pages though - any more revelations since page 3?

We should start a kickstarter when CBOT loses his job over this stuff.

Haven't read the whole thread, but am I to believe Mirror's Edge 2 and a new Prince of Persia will appear at MS' conference, but not be exclusive?

I'm wondering this as well. Where is the reasoning for that line of thought coming from?

Several people have confirmed that ME2 will not be exclusive.

PoP may or may not be exclusive, as the OP does not explicitly say either way.

There IS the possibility they get it in their head that as MS is doing this that Sony can jump in too! And try to pressure them to adopt similar. This is the basis of the feelings (for me) that Microsoft was going to have to go if they went down this path (which they did), because them trying to push it can cause it to spread and be unable to be shaken off, doubly so if they succeed but perhaps even if they don't. A complete throttling, should Sony only maintain the status quo anyway, would probably set back efforts to implement this kind of DRM outside of the PC space for quite awhile, especially as Steam's not even half as bullshit as this.

And if Sony can manage to get the message sent that yes, they have CoD too, HOPEFULLY that severely mitigates that problem. They still have that fucking exclusive DLC though, but that is timed.

Because the only way to make money is the way MS does it.

No, man. At some point pubs have had meetings with MS and Sony about piracy, ect. Is it too crazy to think that each company would have a plan in place too appease the pubs?

MS has theirs at a system level, and Sony has the pubs put it in their games.

Is it crazy to speculate that?

Either way, johnny madden is gonna be fucked with either console, right?

I don't have your faith.

I think some people will learn to take it, as long as they get to play their COD.

They don't have to take it, though. They can just get their COD fix on the PS4. As negative word of mouth about the XBOne spreads, so will positive word of mouth spread about the PS4, eventually becoming the console of choice for both hardcore and casual gamers.

...assuming it has none of this draconian DRM bullshit, of course. If it does, both Sony and Microsoft can go die in a fire.

My guess is that ea will use origin and UbiSoft will use uplay as some form of DRM, whether it be online passes or something else. Other than those two I think the ps4 will be DRM free.

By this time tomorrow we will know definitively whether ps4 will have drm. There isn't much more to say than that.

At this point, I'm taking a wait and see approach.

But I don't have this romantic idea of Sony being superman and saving the day from the evil clutches of MS.

I really REALLY hope Sony either confirms or denies DRM for their system. I just want to know already.

Anyways.

How in the fuck can it be worse than it already is? Jesus Fucking Christ Microsoft, what the fuck are you doing.

CBOAT I actually love you man.

The whole pretend we have exclusives stuff pisses me off more than anything. But that's how micro has always been since 360

It may be a hard position to negotiate from. Take a look at it using game theory. What can the publishers do without revealing Microsoft's position and thereby giving Sony a reason to defect in this prisoner's dilemma?

It would be interesting if pulling this shit when the industry was set to contract ends up leading to a full on crash. No success at expanding user base, and a lot the user base that is there just up and leaves over this stuff rather than putting up with it, at least in great enough numbers that the games that they're throwing this crap on simply can't make enough to justify their development. It really isn't the best time to be dicking around with user rights at any rate.

Ok guys I'm out of the shock phase (the MS scum has sunk in).

I just wanted to say thanks to CBoat for the truthfacts, really appreciate them so far and I hope you can provide us with more. Also thanks to the mods for keeping the thread title and OP as-is, no translation or anything else. This OP is gold to be messed around with and will probably go down in the annals of GAF.

What is to stop Sony just announcing these titles in their preser anyway?

Microsoft surely pissed away money here.
I'm sure the agreements they have in place with the publishers have clauses that forbid them from announcing titles without publisher consent.

Well, this year they'll play it on their current gen systems. Next year, if the market rejects the xbone they'll play it on PS4 or their current gen systems. The ubiquity and market presence of COD is one gen old; it won't automatically make the Xbone a success.

Oh my god.

  • What if Silver members for Xbox One don't even get 24 hours for authentication, instead you have to be online at all times just to launch the game after installing it.
  • You have to digitally re-install the game after a month for up to date authentication
  • If a game isn't updated, you can't play it, period.
  • You have to be a gold member to buy DLC.
  • Silver members have up to a month for keeping saves, must be a gold member to keep saves for a longer period. All save games are required to be placed on the cloud, Silver members get less space or slots in the cloud.

Just rattling off ideas on how the DRM situation could get even worse.

How about this:

Cloud = DRM according to CBOAT
MS requires all games released for XBONE to incorporate cloud functionality
Devs rush to do so as they don't want their games to not be on the successor of the popular 360 (not knowing the blacklash that would come regarding MS DRM later)
Games are designed to use cloud functionality as per requirement, regardless whether they are single player or multiplayer, games cannot be played offline or are crippleware when played offline (ala Simcity, which might have been EA testing the waters)

Just a random thought on how it could be worse.

They don't have to take it, though. They can just get their COD fix on the PS4. As negative word of mouth about the XBOne spreads, so will positive word of mouth spread about the PS4, eventually becoming the console of choice for both hardcore and casual gamers.

Isn't COD: Ghosts confirmed to be an Xbox One timed exclusive? That could have a big impact, but hopefully not a lasting one.

Everyone is in the "wait and see" approach.
Some are being really optimistic admittedly, or that's the impression I get. I'm being cautiously optimistic; I suspect at worst it's going to still be the more appealing Digital platform than the X1, even if retail games are fucked up.

Well I guess, that's that.

Tis Lord Buttocks has spread his divine cheeks of knowledge to spew forth monumental nuggets of this blessed knowledge leaving us all wide eyed and mouths hanging during it's splendor.

Praise be the Buttocks!

I read it well! Awesome. I should translate future CBOAT's posts.

We can figure sony's position on DRM from 3. If this was MS idea from the start and they went to 3rd party devs for support surly Sony would have been building the PS4 without DRM in mind until EA and Ubi came up to them and said "hey can we do this on the PS4, MS is doing it?"
Hopefully Sony would have told them no PS4 won't make it mandatory but if you want your games to support that we can add that freature for you.
So from that is it safe to assume that PS4 will support DRM if the pub wants it and it won't be mandatory or as restrictive like xb1?

About money hatting devs to not mention their PS4 games, that's just some low down dirty shit. I hope those games bomb.

I think just timed exclusive DLC again.

I wouldn't say it's safe to assume at all. Sony mandated online passes for their games, which is already a step taken towards this stuff. They're still entirely up in the air on taking it further or not.

I like to imagine that CBOAT always types a well written draft first, then carefully sprinkles in all the typos. Add a little bit of crazy, hit post button.

If the 299 price point is true, xbone definitely will not fail

its true

my source at sony burkina faso (who's info was subsequently confirmed by a higher up guy from sony kyrgyzstan) has told me sony has nothing and that we're getting 30 minutes of gt6 hd+

My Sony Abu Dhabi source tells me that GT6 is actually really short and the plan is just to play through the whole thing on stage. 55 minute conference.
