Jeff Gerstmann Just Said Sony Decided on $399 Today

wont do any good.

in europe people would even buy it with the 599 price tag, because even with the 360 selling for only 149€ no one buys it in most of the european countries :(

uh... as if a giant multibillion dollar company was deciding major details about its platform the day of a major press conference? I'm calling BS on his claim

I do find it hard to see MS doing well in Europe now. And they don't deserve to.

What happened to good old "give your customer what they want"? Sony knows it.

Sony also announced that the PS4 would launch for $399, a good $100 cheaper than the price announced by Microsoft this morning for its Xbox One console. Again, Rohde said Sony had set that lower price well in advance of its competitors.

"I mean, that was such an amazing message," Rohde said. "We kind of had a feeling; we kind of knew we were gonna land a little bit cheaper than those green guys. When it was verified this morning, we've just been walking around with smiles all day."

I'd surmise that "well in advance" would mean before yesterday.

I think they did, since they actually did the "Decide the price the day of" thing at E3 1995 for the Saturn.

It was probably kept as tight a secret as they possibly could. Maybe they even intentionally spread rumors about higher pricepoints just so they could sink that dagger as deep as humanly possible in Microsoft's back at the conference.

I have been saying 399 since Feb 20th, that was based off some educated guesses from others of estimated cost for materials that were going into it.

A while ago:

"I'm thinking $400, but we'll wait for MS to reveal first."

"Sounds good."

Today:

"They said $500."

"Perfect. Update our slide."

Pretty telling that they showed the camera very prominently during the unveil but its nowhere to be seen in the priced console. Im betting they had multiple options based on what MS did.

They probably had a low end and a high end they were willing to target, and responded to Microsoft's pricing accordingly.

That's not at all surprising nor should it be construed as a dig against Sony.
It was smart to force Microsoft to show their hand first and they priced the PS4 for the kill, knowing it would be difficult for MS to stomach a price drop, let alone such a big one.

I believe this. I get the impression MS made the $499 announcement expecting Sony to take the signal and follow suit, and Sony decided to shaft them.

Sony's no DRM/pricepoint slides looked like something an intern slapped together 10 minutes before show.

It could be that they had the price set n advance but weren't planning on announcing it today. But when MS played their card to negative reactions, and Sony already intended to punch below the belt on a few issues, they decided to squeeze it in for the KO.

does it really matter? i mean it's an interesting anecdote if true, but it's not like they're suddenly going to up the price because people are so taken with them.

I'm sure Sony had every scenario planned out and ran the numbers for every potential price point so I could see some truth to that.
Yeah, I don't think they straight up went "$500 eh? Well we can do $400!", more likely if they did decide today they had a few price points based on what Microsoft ran with, probably ranging from $350 to $450. There had to have been a general range they wanted to hit if nothing else.

Interesting.

They could have possibly went 450$, but they went for the full montey. This is going to pay off in the long run. The only question I have is: When? It has to likely be coming out in November or later, because I don't see why they wouldn't have given another hook and said "We're coming out in September/October too."

Yeah, I have a hard time believing the scenario where MS announced $499 and they were able to do the math, projections, and get through all the channels required to undercut them.

it didn't take a rocket scientist to know that was the proper price point. IDK wtf MS was thinking tethering the X1 to Kinect.

That was very obvious in the slide with the prices. White background, no design and a generic PS4 on the right.

Microsoft was also very careful not to put up a slide with the 499 (to avoid screenshots), taking into account what happened with Sony a few years ago.
